Chapter 7: The Man at the Door

The stranger stood at the entrance of the ballroom like he had been waiting for this exact moment.

He wasn’t dressed like a wedding guest.

No suit.

No tie.

Just a dark jacket, worn jeans, and an expression that told me he had walked into a room where the truth had finally caught up with everyone.

Simone looked at him.

And all the color drained from her face.

“No.””

The word barely escaped her mouth.

The man took one step forward.

“Hello, Simone.””

Her hand covered her mouth.

I looked between them.

“You know him?””

Simone didn’t answer.

That was becoming a pattern.

A dangerous pattern.

The man’s eyes moved toward Ava.

Then Mia.

His expression softened.

“Are they okay?””

The question made my entire body tense.

I stepped in front of the girls.

“Who are you?””

He looked at me.

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then he said:

“My name is Adrian.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way Simone reacted meant everything.

“Darius,” Simone said quickly, “don’t listen to him.””

I turned toward her.

“You said that about Ava.””

She froze.

“And you were wrong.””

The guests watched silently.

Some were recording.

Some were crying.

Some looked like they had forgotten they were standing in the middle of a wedding.

Adrian walked closer.

“I didn’t come here to ruin your wedding.””

I looked at the broken decorations around us.

“You’re a little late.””

He accepted that.

“I came because Ava deserved the truth.””

Ava held onto my hand.

“Do you know my dad?””

Adrian looked at her.

“Yes.””

The answer shocked me.

“How?””

He looked at Lena.

Then at Simone.

“Because I was there when everything started.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Another person.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life that had existed without me.

“How many people knew about my daughter?””

Nobody answered.

That silence hurt more than anything.

Adrian looked at me.

“Not many.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Enough.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

I stepped closer.

“Then start talking.””

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

For the first time, I saw hesitation.

Good.

I wanted him to understand that hesitation was something I had lived with for years without knowing.

“Seven years ago,” he began, “Lena and I worked together.””

Lena looked down.

I glanced at her.

“You knew him too?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I looked around the room.

It felt like everyone had a chapter of my life except me.

Adrian continued.

“Lena was pregnant. She was trying to find you.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

His voice was serious.

“You don’t.””

He looked at Simone.

“Because Simone made sure you never found out.””

Simone shook her head.

“That’s not fair.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Isn’t it?””

She stepped forward.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

His voice sharpened.

“You were afraid.””

Simone’s face fell.

“You thought if Darius knew about Ava, you would lose him.””

The room went quiet.

“But you didn’t just hide Ava.””

He paused.

“You changed the story.””

I frowned.

“What story?””

Adrian reached into his jacket.

And pulled out a small envelope.

My heart sank.

Not another document.

Not another secret.

He handed it to me.

“This is the message Lena tried to send you.””

I looked at Lena.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I wrote that the day Ava was born.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Why didn’t I get it?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He looked at Simone.

That was enough.

I opened it.

Inside was a folded letter.

The paper was old.

The ink had faded.

But the words were clear.

Darius,

I don’t know if you’ll ever see this. I tried to find you. I tried to tell you.

You have a daughter. Her name is Ava. She deserves to know you.

I stopped reading.

My vision blurred.

Because those words were proof.

Proof that someone had tried.

Proof that someone had reached for me.

And someone else had cut the connection.

Ava watched me.

“Did she write that?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“About me?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

I knelt beside her.

“She wanted me to know you.””

Ava looked down.

“Then why didn’t you?””

The question was innocent.

But it destroyed me.

Because I had no answer.

Only the truth.

“I don’t know.””

Adrian looked away.

Simone whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I don’t want another apology.””

My voice shook.

“I want the truth.””

Simone looked broken.

“I was scared.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I stared at her.

“Fear doesn’t explain seven years.””

She had no response.

Then Adrian spoke again.

“There’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

“What now?””

He looked at Simone.

“The reason she was so desperate to keep Ava away…”

He paused.

“Wasn’t only because she loved you.””

Simone looked terrified.

“Adrian.””

He ignored her.

“She was afraid you would find out what happened the night Ava was born.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Lena.

Then Simone.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian said:

“Darius…”

His voice lowered.

“Your daughter’s birth was not the only thing Simone lied about.””

I felt Ava grab my hand tighter.

May you like

And then Adrian revealed the one thing I never expected.

“She changed your medical records.””
