Chapter 9: The Family Secret

The sentence landed harder than any confession before it.

“My father?””

I repeated the words slowly.

Simone nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

The wedding ring on her finger suddenly looked like something from another person’s life.

“What does my father have to do with this?””

Simone looked terrified.

“More than you know.””

I felt anger rising again.

“My father has been dead for five years.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around the ballroom.

The guests.

The cameras.

The flowers.

The ruined wedding.

Then she looked at me.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

I almost laughed.

“Funny.””

My voice was empty.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Simone looked down.

“I met your father before I met you.””

“How?””

“He contacted me.””

“Why?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Because he knew about Ava.””

The room became silent.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“My father knew?””

Simone nodded.

“Yes.””

Lena closed her eyes.

Adrian looked away.

And suddenly I understood.

This secret was bigger than Simone.

Bigger than the wedding.

Bigger than a hidden child.

My own family had been involved.

“How long?””

Simone whispered:

“Since before Ava was born.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

The word came automatically.

Because accepting it meant accepting that my entire family had failed me.

My father.

The man who raised me.

The man who taught me honesty.

“He knew I had a daughter?””

“Yes.””

“And he never told me?””

Simone couldn’t answer.

I looked at Lena.

“Is that true?””

She nodded.

“He knew.””

The pain of that was different.

Simone’s betrayal hurt.

But my father’s silence felt impossible.

I looked at Ava.

Seven years.

So many people knew.

So many chances.

And nobody chose me.

Nobody chose her.

“Why?””

I whispered.

Lena looked down.

“Your father thought he was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.””

My voice broke.

“Everyone thinks they get to decide what I can handle.””

No one argued.

Because it was true.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Your father believed Ava’s existence would destroy your future.””

I stared at him.

“My future?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Simone.

“And she agreed?””

Simone started crying.

“At first.””

The words froze me.

“At first?””

She nodded.

“I thought your father was right.””

Ava looked at her.

“Why?””

Simone looked ashamed.

“Because I was selfish.””

At least that was honest.

I respected honesty more than another excuse.

“What changed?””

Simone looked at Ava.

“Her.””

Ava looked confused.

“You?””

Simone nodded.

“When I met you for the first time…”

She swallowed.

“I realized you weren’t a problem.””

Her voice broke.

“You were a little girl who deserved her father.””

I stared at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because by then, I was already in love with you.””

There it was.

The reason behind everything.

Love twisted into something ugly.

Fear turned into control.

And a secret became a prison.

I looked at the wedding ring on her finger.

“You were going to marry me.””

“Yes.””

“Knowing all of this.””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me.””

She cried.

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

The answer hurt.

But at least it was real.

Then Ava spoke.

Quietly.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

She looked at Simone.

“Is she still going to marry you?””

Nobody moved.

It was the simplest question.

And somehow the hardest.

I looked at Simone.

The woman I once believed I knew.

Then at Ava.

The daughter I had just found.

I took a breath.

“I don’t know.””

Simone closed her eyes.

Like she expected that answer.

Then Adrian reached into his jacket again.

And pulled out one final envelope.

My stomach dropped.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t want another secret.

I didn’t want another document.

But he handed it to me anyway.

“This is the last thing your father left behind.””

I stared at the envelope.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Lena.

“What is it?””

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Darius…”

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Only one page.

Only a few sentences.

But the first line made my hands go cold.

Darius,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.

I stopped.

My father had known.

He had planned for this moment.

I continued reading.

And then I saw the sentence that changed everything.

I never told you about Ava because I was afraid of losing my son.

But I also never told you the truth about Simone…

Because she was not the only person who betrayed you.

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

Simone.

Lena.

Adrian.

Ava.

And then I read the final line.

The line my father had left behind.

The line that made Simone collapse.

May you like

Darius, the woman you are about to marry was never the person who found your daughter.

She was the person who found you first.
