Chapter 11: The Voice From the Past
Nobody spoke after I lowered the phone.
Not immediately.
Everyone was waiting.
Waiting for me to explain.
But I couldn’t.
Because my mother’s voice was impossible.
She had been gone for years.
The number belonged to my father.
And yet I had just heard her.
Alive.
Afraid.
Warning me.
Ava looked up at me.
“Who was it?””
I looked at the phone.
“I don’t know.””
But that wasn’t true.
I knew exactly who it was.
I just didn’t understand how.
Simone slowly approached.
“Darius…”
I moved away.
Not because I hated her.
Because I didn’t know who to trust.
That was the worst feeling.
Every person in this room had a piece of the truth.
And every person had hidden it.
Adrian looked at me.
“You need to hear what she says.””
I stared at him.
“You knew?””
He hesitated.
A mistake.
A small one.
But I saw it.
“You knew my mother was alive?””
The entire room changed.
Lena looked shocked.
Simone looked terrified.
Adrian looked down.
“I knew she wasn’t where everyone thought she was.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Before he answered, my phone rang again.
Same number.
I answered.
This time, I didn’t speak.
Neither did she.
Finally:
“Darius, are you alone?””
I looked around the ballroom.
“No.””
A pause.
“Then don’t say anything about Ava.””
My eyes moved to my daughter.
“Why?””
“Because someone is still trying to control this.””
The fear in her voice was real.
Not fake.
Not calculated.
Real.
“Mom, where are you?””
“I can’t explain everything over the phone.””
“Then explain something.””
Silence.
“Did you know about Ava?””
My mother’s breathing changed.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Another person.
Another secret.
“How long?””
“Since before she was born.””
I closed my eyes.
“How many people knew?””
She whispered:
“Too many.””
I looked at everyone in the ballroom.
“How did you let this happen?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“I trusted the wrong person.””
My eyes moved toward Simone.
Then Lena.
Then Adrian.
“Who?””
Before she could answer, the call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then I looked at Adrian.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“Part of it.””
“Part?””
He looked ashamed.
“I knew your mother had evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
He reached into his jacket.
Again.
Another document.
I almost laughed.
How many more secrets could one family hide?
He handed it to me.
“This is why your mother disappeared.””
I opened it.
It wasn’t a letter.
It was a photograph.
An old photograph.
My father.
My mother.
Simone.
And another person.
I stared at the image.
Because I recognized the fourth person.
A man I had not seen in years.
My uncle.
My father’s brother.
“What is this?””
Adrian answered quietly.
“Your father wasn’t the only person making decisions.””
I looked closer.
Behind the photo was a date.
The date was seven years ago.
The night Ava was born.
My hands shook.
“What does my uncle have to do with this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lena spoke.
“He was the one who convinced your father to hide the truth.””
I felt sick.
My family.
My own blood.
All involved.
I looked at Simone.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
For once, I believed her.
Because she looked just as shocked as I was.
I looked at Ava.
She was tired.
Confused.
Still holding Mia.
This little girl had walked into my wedding carrying a secret that adults had spent years protecting.
And suddenly I realized something.
Everyone had been fighting over the truth.
But nobody had asked what Ava needed.
I knelt beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
But she wasn’t.
Children didn’t nod like that unless they were trying to be brave.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For making everyone fight.””
My heart broke.
I shook my head.
“You didn’t make anyone fight.””
I touched her shoulder.
“The adults did that.””
She looked at me.
“Are you going to leave?””
“No.””
The answer came without thinking.
“No matter what happens, I’m here.””
She leaned against me.
And for the first time that day, I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.
Then my mother called again.
This time, I answered immediately.
Her voice was shaking.
“Darius.””
“Yes.””
“I need you to listen carefully.””
I stood.
“What?””
She whispered:
“Simone was not the person who started this.””
I froze.
“Then who was?””
A long silence.
Then:
“The person who paid her…”
May you like
My chest tightened.
“Was your uncle.””
