Chapter 6: The Night Everything Changed

The ballroom became unbearably quiet.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

The kind of quiet that comes right before something breaks.

I stared at Simone.

“You were there?””

She didn’t answer.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

“How?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I pointed toward the paper.

“No more excuses.””

My voice echoed.

“How were you there when my daughter was born?””

Simone looked at the floor.

Lena stepped forward.

“I’ll tell him.””

Simone immediately looked up.

“No.””

Lena’s expression hardened.

“You had years.””

That sentence landed harder than any accusation.

Simone looked away.

Lena turned to me.

“Seven years ago, before you met Simone…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“She found out about Ava.””

I frowned.

“How?””

Lena looked at Simone.

“Because she knew me.””

The room shifted.

I stared at both women.

“You knew each other?””

Simone closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer felt impossible.

I looked at her.

“All this time?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“My fiancée knew the mother of my child before she ever met me.””

No one responded.

Because there was nothing to say.

Lena held the document tighter.

“Simone and I had history.””

“What kind of history?””

Simone whispered:

“Complicated.””

I looked at her.

“That’s not an answer.””

She wiped her face.

“Lena and I worked at the same place.””

“And?””

“And I knew she was pregnant.””

The room went still.

“Before I knew you?””

“Yes.””

“Before we met?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Ava.

My daughter.

A child who had been hidden from me by someone who knew exactly what she was doing.

I turned away.

I needed air.

But there was nowhere to go.

The ballroom was filled with reminders.

The flowers.

The decorations.

The wedding arch.

Everything I had built for a future that was collapsing.

Marcus came closer.

“Darius, you okay?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

The honesty surprised even me.

“No, I’m not.””

I looked back at Simone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She whispered:

“Because I fell in love with you.””

I stared at her.

“That’s your reason?””

“No.””

She shook her head quickly.

“It’s not.””

She stepped closer.

“I was scared because I knew what would happen.””

“What?””

“You would choose the truth.””

I looked at Ava.

Then Mia.

Then Lena.

And I understood.

She knew me.

That was the worst part.

She knew exactly who I was.

She knew I would never abandon my children.

So she hid them.

Ava tugged my sleeve.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

“Are you mad at me?””

The question destroyed me.

“No.””

I immediately knelt.

“Never.””

“Even though I stopped your wedding?””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t stop anything.””

I looked back at Simone.

“Someone else did that.””

Ava looked relieved.

Then she whispered:

“Mom said there was one more thing.””

My stomach tightened.

“One more thing?””

She nodded.

“She told me not to say it unless you were ready.””

I looked at Lena.

She looked confused.

“I never told her that.””

Ava’s face changed.

Suddenly scared.

“Then…”

She looked toward Simone.

“Who told me?””

Everyone turned.

Simone froze.

The question hung in the air.

Because Ava had just revealed something impossible.

Someone else had been preparing her.

Someone else knew this day would happen.

I stood slowly.

“Simone.””

She looked at me.

“Who talked to my daughter?””

Her face went pale.

“I…”

She stopped.

The ballroom doors suddenly opened again.

A man stood outside.

Everyone turned.

He looked directly at me.

Then at Ava.

Then at Simone.

May you like

And he said four words that made Simone collapse into a chair.

“I know the whole story.””
