Chapter 12: The Price of Silence
The ballroom doors finally closed.
Not because the wedding was continuing.
Because nobody wanted anyone else walking in.
Not until we understood what was happening.
I stood in the center of the room with the phone pressed to my ear.
My mother’s voice was the only thing keeping me connected to reality.
“My uncle paid Simone?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Simone.
Her face was covered with tears.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I believed her.
And that scared me.
Because I didn’t know what was true anymore.
My mother continued.
“Your uncle believed Ava would destroy the family.””
I frowned.
“Destroy the family?””
She sighed.
“Your father built everything around his reputation. His company. His name. His legacy.””
I looked around.
“My daughter was a threat to his reputation?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“She was a threat to the lies he built.””
The words stayed with me.
Because maybe that was the real problem.
Not Ava.
Not Lena.
Not me.
The truth.
People weren’t afraid of problems.
They were afraid of what problems revealed.
I looked at Simone.
“Why did you take the money?””
She looked down.
“I didn’t.””
Everyone turned.
I frowned.
“What?””
She wiped her face.
“I never took money.””
Lena looked surprised.
“What?””
Simone looked at her.
“I accepted help.””
“That’s the same thing.””
“No.””
Simone shook her head.
“I thought it was for medical expenses.””
I stared.
“What are you talking about?””
She took a deep breath.
“Your uncle told me Lena was sick.””
Lena went still.
“I never said that.””
Simone looked at her.
“I know that now.””
The pieces began moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Everyone had been manipulated.
But that didn’t erase what happened.
“You still hid my daughter.””
Simone nodded.
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know I did.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Your uncle played everyone.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted control.””
“Control over what?””
Adrian looked at the wedding guests.
Then back at me.
“Your father’s company.””
I stared.
“What does Ava have to do with a company?””
“Everything.””
I didn’t understand.
Then Lena spoke.
“She was your father’s granddaughter.””
My eyes narrowed.
“And?””
She swallowed.
“Your father had written a new will.””
The room went silent.
“What kind of will?””
Adrian answered.
“One that changed everything.””
I felt a chill.
“What changed?””
He looked at Ava.
“Your father planned to leave part of his estate to his grandchildren.””
I stared at Ava.
A seven-year-old girl.
A child who had no idea she was connected to something much bigger.
“So my uncle hid her.””
“Yes.””
“And my father allowed it.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he found out too late.””
I froze.
“What?””
Adrian lowered his voice.
“Your father discovered the truth shortly before he died.””
The room went quiet.
“He tried to fix it.””
My hands tightened.
“But?””
Adrian looked away.
“But someone stopped him.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then my mother spoke through the phone.
“Darius.””
I pressed it closer.
“Yes?””
Her voice trembled.
“There is something I should have told you years ago.””
I waited.
“Your father didn’t die naturally.””
The room froze.
Every sound disappeared.
“What?””
“He was going to tell you everything.””
My breathing became heavier.
“Mom…”
“I’m sorry.””
“Tell me.””
A pause.
Then she said:
“Your father was killed because he was going to expose the truth.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Even Simone looked shocked.
I looked at Ava.
Then the documents.
Then the people around me.
This was no longer just about a hidden daughter.
It was about a family secret that had taken years from me.
And maybe taken a life.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
I read it once.
Then again.
And my blood went cold.
*Stop searching for the truth, or you’ll lose another person you love.*
I looked up.
Everyone saw my expression.
“What happened?”” Lena asked.
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew.
The wedding was never the beginning of the disaster.
It was the moment someone realized their secret was finally exposed.

And now…
they were afraid of what I would find next.
