Chapter 1: The Message From My Father’s Phone

“Why didn’t you tell me you were pregnant?””

My father’s voice cut through the celebration like a siren. On the day I was supposed to smile for pictures and hold my diploma high, I stood frozen beside the university graduation steps with tears running down my face.

I had imagined this moment a thousand times.

My green graduation cap would be decorated with flowers. My family would cheer. My father, Marcus Carter, would wrap me in his arms and tell me he was proud.

Instead, he was staring at me like I had become a stranger.

The bright afternoon sun reflected off the stone steps behind us. Families gathered around the courtyard, laughing, taking photos, fixing graduation gowns. But our little group felt completely separate from the happiness surrounding us.

I held one hand over my stomach, protecting the life growing inside me.

“Dad…” My voice cracked.

“I tried to tell you.””

Marcus stood in front of me, his gray hair moving slightly in the warm breeze. He wore his navy cardigan over a white shirt, the same serious expression he had worn through every difficult moment of my childhood.

“Then why didn’t you?”” he asked.

My stepmother Vanessa stood beside him, perfectly dressed in a cream blouse and burgundy skirt. She had always been the person who knew what to say when things got uncomfortable.

Today, she said nothing.

That scared me more.

“Because I was afraid,” I whispered.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Afraid of me?””

The question hurt because I knew the answer wasn’t simple.

My father was strict. Protective. He believed he could solve every problem if he just pushed hard enough.

When my grades dropped, he pushed me. When I wanted to move out for college, he questioned every decision.

But he was also the man who stayed awake all night when I had the flu. The man who learned how to braid my hair after my mother passed away. The man who saved every drawing I made as a child.

I never wanted to disappoint him.

“I didn’t know how to say it,” I said.

Vanessa finally stepped forward.

“Maya, your father has the right to know the truth.””

I looked at her.

Something about her tone felt strange.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Almost prepared.

Marcus looked from Vanessa back to me.

“Who is the father?””

The question landed harder than anything else.

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

Because before I could answer, someone behind us did.

“I am.””

The crowd noise seemed to disappear.

I turned.

Jordan stood a few feet away near the flower decorations lining the courtyard. His curly hair was slightly messy, and his light-blue shirt was wrinkled like he had rushed there without thinking about anything except getting to me.

My heart stopped.

“Jordan…”

My father turned slowly.

The look on his face changed immediately.

“You.””

Jordan swallowed.

“Yes, sir.””

Marcus took a step toward him.

“You disappeared when she needed you.””

Jordan shook his head.

“No, sir.””

His voice was calm, but his hands were shaking.

“I came back.””

A few people nearby glanced over, sensing tension. I wanted to disappear. I wanted the ground beneath the graduation steps to open and hide me.

Marcus pointed toward Jordan.

“You walked away from my daughter.””

“No,” Jordan said.

“I was pushed away.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Jordan looked at me.

For a second, I saw the same pain I had been carrying.

“I tried to reach her.””

My breathing became unsteady.

Because that wasn’t what I remembered.

Or at least… it wasn’t what I had been told.

Jordan reached into his pocket.

“I need you to see something.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

She looked at the phone in Jordan’s hand, and the color slowly drained from her face.

“Jordan,” she said quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”” Marcus asked.

Vanessa forced a smile.

“Nothing. I just think this is not the place for this.””

Jordan ignored her.

He unlocked his phone and walked toward my father.

“I left because I received this.””

Marcus looked down at the screen.

Jordan held it between them.

A message was displayed.

*STAY AWAY FROM MAYA. SHE DOESN’T WANT YOU.*

Below it was the sender name.

*MARCUS CARTER*

My father stopped moving.

The noise of the courtyard returned all at once.

Children laughing.

Cameras clicking.

Graduates cheering.

But my family stood completely silent.

Marcus looked at Jordan.

Then at the phone.

Then back at Jordan.

“I never sent this.””

Jordan’s eyes stayed locked on him.

“It came from your phone.””

My father’s face changed.

Slowly, he turned toward Vanessa.

She looked at the screen.

Her eyes widened.

Her mouth opened slightly.

For the first time in my life, Vanessa looked afraid.

Marcus didn’t say a word.

May you like

He just stared at her.

And I knew, whatever happened next, our family would never be the same.
