Chapter 3: The Secret Everyone Was Protecting

Vanessa dropped the phone.

It hit the stone ground between us.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The graduation decorations swayed gently in the wind. A group of students walked past laughing, completely unaware that my entire family had just fallen apart in front of them.

My father looked down at the phone.

Then at Vanessa.

“What did you do?””

She shook her head.

“Marcus, it’s not what you think.””

Those words.

Everyone says those words when the truth is already close enough to see.

Jordan bent down and picked up the phone.

The call had ended.

The screen was still unlocked.

Marcus didn’t reach for it.

He just stared.

“Who was that?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with panic.

“Nobody.””

Jordan looked at her.

“Nobody doesn’t call and say something like that.””

She turned toward him.

“You need to stop.””

“No,” Jordan said.

“I stopped once already.””

His voice cracked.

“I stopped when I thought Maya didn’t want me. I stopped when I thought her father hated me. I stopped because I believed the person I trusted.””

He looked at Marcus.

“I believed it came from you.””

My father looked away.

For the first time, I saw regret on his face.

Not anger.

Regret.

“Maya,” he said quietly.

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words almost broke me.

Because my father rarely apologized.

But before I could answer, Jordan’s phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

A new notification appeared.

A message.

From an unknown number.

Jordan opened it.

His face changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Jordan,” Marcus said.

Slowly, Jordan turned the phone around.

The message was short.

*STOP DIGGING. YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO DESTROY.*

My father’s expression hardened.

“Give me that phone.””

Jordan handed it over.

Marcus stared at the message.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You know who sent this.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t.””

But her voice was different.

Smaller.

Broken.

I had never seen her look afraid before.

My father noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“I made a mistake.””

The words fell into the silence.

My heart started pounding.

“What mistake?””

She looked at me.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because I realized she wasn’t looking at me like a daughter.

She was looking at me like someone who knew too much.

“Maya…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

Marcus moved between us.

“What are you hiding?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I was trying to protect this family.””

Jordan laughed bitterly.

“By destroying mine?””

“No,” she whispered.

“By stopping something worse.””

Nobody understood.

And that was the worst part.

The truth was right there, but every answer created more questions.

My father’s voice became colder.

“Start talking.””

Vanessa looked around.

At Marcus.

At me.

At Jordan.

Finally, she whispered:

“The message didn’t start with me.””

The courtyard went silent.

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked down.

“It means someone else wanted Jordan gone.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Like saying the name would change everything.

My father noticed.

“Say it.””

A tear rolled down Vanessa’s cheek.

“I can’t.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You can.””

She looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw fear turn into something else.

Guilt.

“I was only supposed to keep them apart until…”

She stopped.

“Until what?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at my stomach.

Then back at me.

And the answer never came.

Because at that exact moment, a woman from the university security team approached us holding a small envelope.

“Mr. Carter?””

My father turned.

“Yes?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“This was left for your family.””

Marcus took the envelope.

There was no return address.

No name.

Only three words written across the front.

*YOU DESERVE THE TRUTH.*

My father slowly opened it.

And inside was a photograph.

A photograph that made his face lose all color.

Because standing in the picture was someone none of us expected to see.

May you like

Someone who had been gone for years.

And someone who knew exactly why Jordan had been forced away from Maya.
