Chapter 2: The Person Behind the Silence
My father had always been the loudest person in any room.
He filled spaces.
He gave orders.
He asked questions nobody else wanted to answer.
But standing there on the graduation courtyard steps, Marcus Carter became completely silent.
That scared me more than his anger.
“Vanessa,” he finally said.
Just her name.
Nothing else.
But she knew exactly what he meant.
She looked around at the people watching us.
“Marcus, we should talk somewhere private.””
Jordan laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“Private?””
He held up the phone.
“I spent months thinking you hated me.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Jordan—”
“No.”” His voice became stronger.
“You don’t get to explain this away.””
I stared between them.
My hands were trembling.
“Jordan,” I whispered, “what happened?””
He looked at me, and his expression softened.
“Maya, I tried calling you.””
I shook my head.
“You stopped answering.””
“I never stopped.””
The words hit me.
“What?””
Jordan looked at my father.
“I called her every day for almost two weeks.””
Marcus frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
Jordan nodded.
“That’s what I thought too.””
He scrolled through his phone.
“I sent messages. I left voicemails. Nothing.””
My chest tightened.
Because I remembered those weeks differently.
I remembered feeling abandoned.
I remembered crying in my apartment, staring at my phone, wondering why Jordan could disappear so easily.
But what if he hadn’t?
“What did you receive?”” Marcus asked.
Jordan looked down.
“That message.””
He tapped the screen.
“And then another one.””
My father stepped closer.
“What other message?””
Jordan hesitated.
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“This is getting ridiculous.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was low.
“Let him speak.””
The courtyard suddenly felt colder.
Jordan unlocked his phone again.
“I received a second message three days later.””
He showed us.
It said:
*IF YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT HER, YOU WILL LEAVE HER ALONE.*
I felt tears forming again.
Because those words sounded familiar.
They sounded like the exact thing I had believed.
Jordan looked at me.
“I thought you didn’t want me there.””
My voice shook.
“I thought you left me.””
His face fell.
“Maya…”
For a moment, everything else disappeared.
The graduation.
The crowd.
The anger.
It was just two people realizing they had been hurt by something neither understood.
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Why would someone do this?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, this is enough.””
My father turned.
“What did you say?””
She swallowed.
“I said this is enough. Maya is pregnant. Today is supposed to be about her graduation, not some old relationship drama.””
Jordan looked at her.
“Old?””
His voice was quiet.
“You knew I loved her.””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
That silence said more than words.
I looked at my stepmother.
For years, she had been the woman who packed my lunch when Dad worked late. The woman who sat beside me during college applications.
But now I noticed things I had ignored.
The way she avoided Jordan’s eyes.
The way she kept checking the phone.
The way she seemed less shocked by the message and more afraid it had been discovered.
My father noticed too.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
“Why did you know Jordan was coming?””
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But enough.
“I didn’t.””
Jordan stepped forward.
“Yes, you did.””
Everyone looked at him.
He reached into his pocket again.
“I sent a message this morning.””
Marcus stared.
“To who?””
Jordan looked directly at Vanessa.
“To her.””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“What?””
“I asked if Maya would be here today.””
The air became heavy.
Marcus slowly looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
“No,” she said quickly.
Too quickly.
“I didn’t know anything.””
My father watched her carefully.
“Then why did you tell me this morning that Jordan wouldn’t show up?””
Vanessa froze.
I felt my stomach drop.
Because I remembered that too.
Earlier that morning, while I was putting on my graduation gown, Vanessa had walked into my room.
She had hugged me.
She had smiled.
And she had whispered:
“Don’t worry, Maya. Some people don’t come back.””
At the time, I thought she was comforting me.
Now I wondered if she was warning me.
Marcus took one step closer.
“Answer me.””
Vanessa looked at him.
Her calm expression was breaking apart.
“I…”
Her phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked down.
She hesitated before answering.
The screen lit up.
A name appeared.
Marcus saw it before she could hide it.
His face changed.
Because the person calling was someone he never expected.
Someone connected to the message.
Someone who could explain everything.
May you like
And when Vanessa answered the phone, the first words from the other end made her completely lose control.
“Don’t let Marcus find out what you did.””
