Chapter 12: The Hospital Room Secret

Darlene didn’t speak.

That was the first time I had ever seen her lose control completely.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

Real fear.

My father noticed.

“Darlene.””

She looked at him.

“I can explain.””

He shook his head.

“No more explanations.””

His voice was quiet.

“Only truth.””

She looked at the floor.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

That sentence had become the family’s favorite excuse.

Everyone had used it.

Everyone had hurt someone while saying it.

“Protect him from what?”” I asked.

Darlene looked at me.

Her expression softened.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I stood.

“You don't get to look at me like you love me anymore. Not until you tell me the truth.””

Her face broke slightly.

For a moment, she looked like my aunt again.

The woman who taught me how to bake cookies.

The woman who hugged me when I got my first heartbreak.

Then I remembered.

She was also the woman who let me believe my mother abandoned me.

Darlene took a shaky breath.

“The night you were born, your mother almost died.””

Elena looked away.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Marcus immediately looked at Elena.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried.””

The pain in her voice was immediate.

Darlene continued.

“There were complications after the birth.””

I looked at my mother.

“You almost died?””

She nodded.

“I lost a lot of blood.””

My chest tightened.

Darlene looked at Marcus.

“You were terrified.””

“I was.””

“You were exhausted. You had a newborn baby and a wife who was fighting for her life.””

My father lowered his eyes.

“And?””

Darlene swallowed.

“And someone came into the hospital.””

The room became silent.

“Who?””

She looked at the floor.

“Andre.””

My father froze.

“Why?””

Darlene’s voice became smaller.

“He came to see Maya.””

My stomach dropped.

“He knew I existed?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Darlene looked at Marcus.

“Because someone told him.””

Nobody moved.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Who?””

Darlene didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Everyone already knew.

My father stepped back.

“No.””

Darlene closed her eyes.

“Your father.””

The room went silent.

“My grandfather?””

She nodded.

“My father told Andre about you.””

I felt dizzy.

“Why?””

Darlene looked at Elena.

“Because he believed Maya was the future of the Carter family.””

That made no sense.

My father frowned.

“What are you saying?””

Darlene looked at him.

“Your father believed the family needed someone to inherit everything. He didn't trust Elena. He didn't trust anyone outside the Carter name.””

Elena whispered:

“He wanted my daughter.””

Darlene nodded.

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

“And Andre agreed.””

Jordan looked shocked.

“So this wasn't about money.””

“No,” Elena said.

“It was about control.””

Marcus covered his face.

“My God.””

I stared at my aunt.

“And you knew.””

She cried silently.

“Yes.””

The admission was barely audible.

“You knew my grandfather and uncle wanted control over me.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped them?””

Darlene shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I helped stop it.””

Everyone paused.

“What?””

Darlene wiped her face.

“I found out what they planned. Andre wanted to take Maya away. Your grandfather wanted control of the family assets. Elena discovered the records and was getting too close.””

Marcus stared.

“Then why did you lie?””

“Because I thought I could control the situation.””

Her honesty was almost worse.

“I thought if I separated Elena from the family, I could keep Maya safe.””

Elena looked at her.

“You destroyed my life.””

“I know.””

“You destroyed Marcus’s trust.””

“I know.””

“You made Maya hate herself for years.””

Darlene looked at me.

“I know.””

The room fell silent.

Then I asked the question nobody wanted to ask.

“Where is Andre now?””

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

Marcus looked at the phone.

“He contacted us.””

Jordan nodded.

“He knows where we are.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“I need to tell you something.””

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

“But it’s about Andre.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Vanessa’s hands trembled.

“Before I helped Darlene send that message to Jordan…”

She swallowed.

“I received a call.””

My father’s face changed.

“From who?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“From Andre.””

The room went silent.

“What did he want?”” Jordan asked.

Vanessa looked down.

“He wanted me to make sure Maya never found out the truth.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because he said if you learned the truth…”

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“…you would remember something from the night you were born.””

I frowned.

“Remember?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said you saw his face.””

Everyone froze.

My father stared at me.

“Maya…”

I felt a strange pressure building in my head.

A memory.

A sound.

A hospital room.

A man’s voice.

A shadow standing beside my mother’s bed.

And suddenly, for the first time in twenty years…

I remembered something I was never supposed to remember.

I whispered:

“He had a scar.””

My father looked at me.

“What?””

I touched my forehead.

“He was holding something.””

Elena grabbed my hand.

“Maya, what are you remembering?””

I looked at everyone.

At my family.

At the people who had spent years protecting secrets from me.

And I said the words that made Andre’s entire plan begin to fall apart.

“He wasn't alone.””

Marcus went pale.

“Who was with him?””

I closed my eyes.

The memory became clearer.

A second person.

A familiar voice.

A voice I had heard my entire life.

May you like

Then I whispered:

“Darlene.””
