Chapter 6: The Warning From My Mother
The message stayed on Jordan’s phone for less than a minute.
Then it disappeared.
Not deleted.
Not closed.
Gone.
Everyone saw it happen.
The screen flickered.
The message vanished like it had never existed.
Jordan stared at the phone.
“What just happened?””
Marcus grabbed it from him.
“That’s impossible.””
Jordan took it back.
“No. Someone accessed it.””
My father looked around the courtyard.
His instincts returned immediately.
The protective father.
The man who always searched for danger before anyone else could see it.
“Everyone stay close.””
I almost laughed.
“Now you want to protect me?””
The words hurt him.
Good.
I needed him to understand.
I had spent years believing the person who was supposed to love me most had walked away.
Now I was learning he had hidden the truth.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
Again.
But this time, the apology wasn’t enough.
“I need answers.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“You deserve them.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Maya…”
I looked at her.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
“I trusted you.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice shook.
“You were there when I cried about my mom. You listened while I said I wasn’t enough. You knew the whole time.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
She had no answer.
Jordan stood beside me.
Not in front.
Not trying to fight my battles.
Just there.
The way I had needed him to be.
Marcus noticed.
And for the first time, he didn’t look angry.
He looked ashamed.
“I owe you an apology too.””
Jordan looked at him.
“I don’t need one.””
“Yes, you do.””
My father took a breath.
“I judged you without knowing the truth.””
Jordan looked away.
“Your judgment almost destroyed everything.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
Before anyone could say more, a sound came from the entrance of the courtyard.
A woman’s voice.
“Maya.””
My body froze.
I knew that voice.
Not because I remembered hearing it.
Because I had heard it in old recordings.
In the videos my father kept hidden.
In the dreams I barely remembered.
Slowly, everyone turned.
A woman stood at the edge of the graduation courtyard.
Black coat.
Short curly hair.
Tears in her eyes.
My mother.
Elena Carter.
Alive.
My knees almost gave out.
Marcus whispered her name.
“Elena…”
She looked at him.
There was pain there.
And anger.
Twenty years of both.
“You told her I left.””
My father looked broken.
“Elena, I can explain.””
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
But powerful.
“You don’t get to explain before she knows the truth.””
Everyone went silent.
I stared at the woman who was supposed to be a memory.
My mother walked toward me slowly.
“Maya.””
I couldn’t move.
“I thought you were dead.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Her face collapsed.
“I know.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“And I’m sorry.””
I wanted to run toward her.
I wanted to push her away.
I wanted both.
“How could you leave me?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“I didn’t.””
My breathing stopped.
“I was taken away from you.””
Jordan looked at Marcus.
My father lowered his head.
Elena continued.
“Someone made sure I could never reach you.””
“Who?”” I asked.
Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Not with anger.
With sadness.
And Vanessa immediately started crying.
“No.””
Elena whispered:
“She wasn’t the only one.””
My father stepped forward.
“What are you saying?””
Elena reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I brought proof.””
My heart raced.
Proof of what?
She handed it to me.
The envelope was old.
The paper edges were worn.
My name was written across the front.
Not Maya.
Not daughter.
Just:
*For the child I had to leave behind.*
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
And the first line made everyone freeze.
*Maya, if you are reading this, it means the person who separated us has finally been exposed.*
I looked up.
“Who?””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered the name.
The name that made my father take a step back.
The name that made Vanessa cover her mouth.
The name nobody expected.
“The person who destroyed our family…”
May you like
She looked at Marcus.
“…was someone you trusted more than anyone.””
