Chapter 14: The Brother Who Never Left
Andre Carter stood near the courtyard entrance as if he had every right to be there.
He wore a charcoal jacket over a pale blue shirt. His hair was gray at the temples, and a curved scar ran beside his left eye.
He looked like a man who had spent years learning how to appear harmless.
When he saw Marcus, he smiled.
“Brother.””
My father didn't return the greeting.
“You have some nerve showing your face here.””
Andre glanced past him and looked directly at me.
“Maya. You've grown up beautifully.””
I felt Jordan stiffen beside me.
“Don't talk to her like you know her,” my father said.
Andre's smile disappeared.
“I'm her uncle.””
“You're a man who tried to take my newborn daughter.””
Andre sighed as though Marcus had become unreasonable.
“I was trying to protect the family.””
I almost laughed.
Every person who had hurt us seemed to use those words.
“Protect us from what?”” I asked.
Andre turned toward me.
“From an ugly truth.””
“What truth?””
He studied me for a moment.
“You're old enough to understand that families don't survive by telling everyone everything.””
I stepped forward.
“Families don't survive by making their daughters believe their mothers abandoned them.””
His expression tightened.
For the first time, I saw irritation beneath his calm.
“You have your mother's way of speaking.””
“I'm proud of that.””
Jordan's fingers brushed mine.
Andre noticed.
“So this is the young man who caused all the trouble.””
Jordan looked at him steadily.
“I didn't cause anything. I refused to disappear when people told me to.””
Andre gave a small, dismissive laugh.
“You have no idea how many people you put at risk.””
“Then explain it.””
Andre looked at Marcus.
“You always did have a talent for surrounding yourself with people who ask the wrong questions.””
My father stepped closer.
“Enough. Why are you here?””
Andre's eyes moved toward the conference room.
“I'm here for something that belongs to me.””
“What?””
“The original records.””
Vanessa appeared in the doorway behind us.
The blood drained from her face.
Andre saw her.
His expression became sharp.
“Vanessa. You should have stayed out of this.””
She trembled, but she didn't step back.
“I'm done being afraid of you.””
He laughed.
“You have spent years being afraid of Darlene.””
“Because she helped you threaten me.””
Darlene came outside behind her.
For a moment, the siblings stood facing each other across the courtyard.
No affection.
No family warmth.
Just twenty years of damage.
Andre looked at Darlene.
“You were supposed to keep everything under control.””
Darlene lifted her chin.
“I tried.””
“You let Elena return. You let Marcus start asking questions. And now you have everyone standing here like some kind of courtroom audience.””
My father stepped between them.
“You don't get to blame her for the choices you made.””
Andre turned toward him.
“You have always been weak, Marcus. You let Elena fill your head with suspicions. You let a young man interfere in family business. You even let your own wife help tear everything apart.””
Marcus's fists tightened.
“And you tried to take my daughter.””
“I tried to preserve what our father built.””
“You tried to steal money from a child's future!””
Andre's smile vanished.
The sudden change in his face was unmistakable.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Did you tell them about the account?””
Vanessa nodded.
“And the hospital?””
“Yes.””
“And the messages?””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
Andre looked almost disappointed.
“After everything I did to keep this family from destroying itself?””
I stared at him.
“You didn't keep it together. You kept us confused enough that no one could fight back.””
He turned toward me.
“You have no idea what happened behind closed doors.””
“Then tell me.””
His jaw moved.
For several seconds, I thought he might actually explain.
Instead, he pointed at Jordan.
“He was the problem. He kept contacting you. He wanted answers. He was going to bring strangers into private family matters.””
Jordan shook his head.
“I wanted to know why someone was pretending to be your father.””
“And that was your mistake.””
“My mistake was believing you were capable of telling the truth.””
Andre took a step toward him.
Marcus immediately moved in front of Jordan.
“No more threats.””
Andre stopped.
The security officer who had escorted us out of the conference room approached with another staff member. They stayed several feet away, watching closely.
Andre lowered his voice.
“You should hear what happened to the money before you decide who the villain is.””
My father stared at him.
“Go on.””
“Our father established arrangements for the Carter family. He wanted the business and its assets protected. When Elena started questioning the transactions, she threatened everything.””
Elena, who had quietly come outside, shook her head.
“I asked to see records connected to my daughter's education.””
“And you threatened to report me.””
“Because the records didn't match!””
Andre's jaw tightened.
Marcus turned toward his brother.
“Did you take the money?””
Andre looked away.
That was the moment.
No excuse could erase it.
“Yes,” he said.
Vanessa gasped.
Andre continued quickly.
“I moved it through accounts that were supposed to protect the family's assets. I intended to replace it.””
“With what?”” Marcus demanded.
“Money that never existed?””
“I had a plan.””
“You stole from Maya.””
“I was managing a crisis!””
Marcus shook his head.
“You created the crisis.””
Andre looked at me.
“The money wasn't the only issue. If Elena had reported the transfers, the investigation would have exposed other decisions our father made. The family would have been ruined.””
“Then you should have faced the investigation,” Elena replied.
Andre laughed bitterly.
“You people think telling the truth fixes everything.””
“No,” my mother said.
“But lying guarantees that nobody can trust you.””
For the first time, Andre looked genuinely cornered.
He reached into his jacket.
Marcus immediately raised his voice.
“Keep your hands where we can see them.””
Andre stopped and slowly withdrew a small phone.
“I came prepared to prove my side of the story.””
Jordan looked at the device.
“What's on it?””
“Messages. Records. Proof that I didn't act alone.””
Darlene turned pale.
“Andre, don't.””
He looked at her.
“Why? Afraid they'll finally discover how much you knew?””
He unlocked the phone.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“You want to know who sent the first message from your phone? Who made Jordan believe Maya wanted nothing to do with him?””
My father stared at him.
“We already know Darlene used my phone.””
Andre smiled.
“Darlene sent the message. Vanessa helped her. But neither of them wrote the words.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you talking about?””
Andre turned the phone toward us.
An old message thread filled the screen.
The name at the top wasn't Darlene's.
It wasn't Vanessa's.
It was Andre's.
He had written the warning himself, then passed the phone to Darlene so she could send it using Marcus's number.
“Why?”” Jordan asked.
Andre's face hardened.
“Because I needed everyone separated. Marcus. Elena.
Maya. Anyone who might compare notes and discover where the money really went.””
He paused.
“And because I knew exactly what would happen if Jordan kept trying to bring Maya back into the family.””
Marcus stared at his brother.
“You destroyed my daughter's relationship to hide your theft.””
Andre gave a tight smile.
“I did what I had to do.””
“No,” I said.
“You did what you wanted.””
Andre looked at me.
For the first time, I didn't see a powerful man.
I saw someone who had mistaken fear for respect for so long that he couldn't understand why we no longer feared him.
The security officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, we need you to come with us while we contact the authorities.””
Andre's expression changed.
“You can't be serious.””
“We have witnesses describing threats, and you have just admitted to financial misconduct in front of several people. We need to document what happened.””
Andre looked at Marcus.
“Tell them to leave me alone.””
My father didn't move.
“Not this time.””
Andre looked toward Darlene.
She stared at the ground.
Then Vanessa.
She turned away.
Finally, his eyes settled on me.
“You'll regret turning against your own blood.””
I held his gaze.
“Blood is the reason you got away with hurting us for so long.””
The security officer directed Andre toward the university administration building to await police.
He didn't fight.
He simply looked back once, as if expecting someone to rescue him.
Nobody did.
But before he disappeared from sight, he called out one final sentence.
“The messages aren't the only thing I have on this family.””
My father looked up.
Andre smiled without warmth.
“Ask Vanessa what she kept from the hospital.””
Then he was gone.
May you like
Vanessa went completely still.
And I knew the truth still had one last piece.
