Chapter 10: The Night I Was Born

My father stopped breathing.

Not literally.

But that was what it looked like.

The message on Jordan’s phone had turned the entire courtyard silent.

*ASK MARCUS WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT YOU WERE BORN.*

Six words.

That was all it took to destroy whatever confidence remained in him.

I looked at my father.

The man who had raised me.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike, how to stand up for myself, how to never let anyone make me feel small.

Now he couldn’t even look me in the eyes.

“Dad?””

He closed his eyes.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Marcus Carter had always looked at problems directly.

Except this one.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Nobody moved.

Darlene looked away.

Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.

Elena’s expression changed from anger to fear.

Not fear of the truth.

Fear of what the truth would do to me.

My father slowly sat down on the stone steps.

The graduation crowd continued moving around us, completely unaware that my family was being torn apart.

“I was afraid this day would come,” he whispered.

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at me.

“When you were born, something happened.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“Something involving who?””

My father looked at Elena.

Then Darlene.

Then Vanessa.

Finally, he looked at me.

“You.””

The answer made no sense.

“What about me?””

He swallowed.

“The night you were born, someone tried to take you.””

The words froze me.

“What?””

Elena covered her mouth.

I turned toward her.

“You knew?””

She nodded slowly.

“I knew someone wanted to hurt our family.””

My father looked down at his hands.

“You were born during the worst time of our lives. Your mother and I had just started realizing someone was manipulating things around us.””

Darlene interrupted.

“That’s not what happened.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You don't get to rewrite this anymore.””

The sharpness in his voice silenced her.

He continued.

“After Maya was born, I opened a savings account for her. I wanted her future protected. College.

A home. Whatever she needed.””

His voice cracked.

“Then one night, I received a call.””

“From who?”” I asked.

He hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

Jordan frowned.

“You don’t know?””

“The person never gave a name. They told me someone close to me was planning to take Maya away.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked devastated.

“They told me Elena was unstable,” Marcus continued.

“They told me she would disappear with you if I didn’t act first.””

My heart hurt.

“Did you believe them?””

My father didn’t answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

“I was exhausted. I was scared. I had a newborn daughter and a wife who seemed distant because she was fighting something I didn’t understand.””

Elena whispered:

“Because I was being threatened.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know that now.””

A tear fell from my mother’s face.

“But back then, I didn’t.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was the first honest thing my father had given me all day.

“So what happened that night?””

Marcus looked at the phone.

“At three in the morning, someone came to our house.””

Everyone went still.

“Who?””

“I never saw their face.””

Darlene immediately looked away.

Jordan noticed.

“So you do know something.””

Darlene shook her head.

“No.””

But nobody believed her.

Marcus continued.

“The person left a message.””

“What message?””

My father’s voice lowered.

“They said if I wanted Maya safe, I had to choose who I trusted.””

A chill moved through me.

“And you chose?””

He looked at Elena.

“I chose wrong.””

My mother closed her eyes.

The pain on her face was unbearable.

“You believed your sister.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The courtyard seemed to tilt.

“You believed Darlene over my mother?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You separated us.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

For once, he didn’t defend himself.

He accepted it.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

But she kept going.

“The person who came to the house that night left something behind.””

Marcus looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because Darlene showed it to me.””

My aunt’s expression changed.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I’m done protecting you.””

She turned toward Marcus.

“After Maya was born, Darlene found a document. She said it proved someone was trying to steal money from the family.””

Marcus frowned.

“What document?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“A birth certificate.””

Silence.

I felt my stomach drop.

“My birth certificate?””

Nobody answered.

Then Jordan looked at the message again.

“The person who sent this wants us to know something.””

He looked at Marcus.

“Something about the night Maya was born.””

My father slowly stood.

His face was pale.

“Because there was another person there.””

Elena looked at him.

“Marcus.””

He shook his head.

“I never told Maya because I was ashamed.””

I stepped forward.

“Who was there?””

My father looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Someone who was never supposed to know she existed.””
