Chapter 5: The Lie That Raised Me

My father refused to talk at the graduation ceremony.

Not because he didn’t have answers.

Because he had too many.

He took us away from the crowd and into a quiet corner of the courtyard near the stone steps. The bright celebration continued behind us, but our family stood in the shadow of a truth that had waited years to be uncovered.

I held my diploma folder against my chest.

It was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.

Instead, I was learning that my entire childhood had been built around a lie.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

My father looked at me.

“I don’t know where to start.””

“Start with my mother.””

His face fell.

Jordan stood beside me.

Vanessa stayed several feet away, silent.

Marcus looked older than he had an hour ago.

“Your mother and I loved each other.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible to understand.

“If you loved her, why did I grow up thinking she abandoned me?””

He looked down.

“Because I was angry.””

“At her?””

“At myself.””

The answer surprised me.

My father sat down on the stone step.

“I thought I could fix everything. I thought I could control every problem.””

He looked at the graduation decorations.

“When your mother discovered something, she wanted to tell the truth.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“About what?””

He hesitated.

And I saw it again.

Fear.

“She found out someone close to us was lying.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I turned toward her.

“Was it you?””

She flinched.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Almost desperately.

Marcus looked at her.

“Vanessa wasn’t the person who started it.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“Then who was?””

My father rubbed his hands together.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

My voice rose.

“My mother disappeared, and you don’t know?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I spent years trying to find her.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I got close, another warning came.””

Jordan looked at him.

“Warning?””

Marcus nodded.

“Phone calls. Messages. Threats.””

The courtyard suddenly felt colder.

“Someone told me if I kept searching, Maya would be hurt.””

I stared at him.

“Someone threatened me?””

He looked at me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You were protecting me from a truth I deserved to know.””

Nobody answered.

Because they knew I was right.

Jordan looked at Marcus.

“Who knew about those threats?””

My father looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

And that was enough.

Jordan’s eyes narrowed.

“You told her.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

“You told Vanessa.””

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

Jordan stepped back.

“So she knew.””

My father nodded.

“She helped me.””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“I did.””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“I helped Marcus because I was scared too.””

“For twenty years?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“I thought the danger was gone.””

“And now?””

Vanessa looked at Jordan’s phone.

“Now I know it wasn’t.””

A notification appeared on the screen.

Jordan picked it up.

Another message.

This time, it wasn’t from an unknown number.

It was from a saved contact.

My father saw the name.

His face changed.

“Impossible.””

Jordan looked at him.

“Who is it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

I looked at the screen.

The name was clear.

*ELENA CARTER*

My mother.

My hands started shaking.

“That’s not possible.””

Marcus grabbed the phone.

His fingers trembled.

“No.””

Jordan looked confused.

“But the message came from her number.””

My father stared at the screen.

A single sentence waited there.

*Marcus, you failed to protect our daughter. Now I have to do it myself.*

My heart raced.

“She’s alive?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“She never left.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“She’s been watching.””

My father stood up.

“Vanessa.””

But she was already crying.

“She knows everything.””

Jordan stepped closer.

“Everything about what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then at my stomach.

May you like

And the fear in her eyes returned.

“About the baby.””
