Chapter 10: The Name Sarah Tried to Hide
I read Lily's message again.
Then a third time.
*Sarah wasn't hiding the ledger from Harold. She was hiding it from you.*
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the blood pounding in my ears.
Why would Sarah hide something from me?
What had she known?
And why would my name appear in a ledger belonging to a man who had spent years exploiting women and girls?
I called Lily immediately.
She answered on the first ring.
"Where are you?""
"I'm at the police station.""
"Are you safe?""
"For now.""
I glanced at Vanessa.
She was standing near the filing cabinet, watching me.
"Lily, you said you found Sarah's ledger. Where?""
"In a storage unit.""
"Whose storage unit?""
"Sarah's.""
My knees nearly gave way.
"She had a storage unit?""
"Yes. I found the key inside the envelope she left with the residential facility.""
I remembered the years Sarah and I had spent together.
The Sunday breakfasts.
The family photographs.
The conversations about our future.
She had never mentioned a storage unit.
"What's in it?""
"Boxes. Photographs. Old business records. Letters.""
"Have you opened everything?""
"No. I found the ledger first.""
"Send me a photograph of the page with my name.""
There was a pause.
"I don't think you should see it over the phone.""
"Lily, please.""
She sighed.
"All right. But promise me something.""
"What?""
"Don't confront Vanessa until you understand why Sarah kept this secret.""
I looked at my wife.
"I think that ship has already sailed.""
Lily sent the photograph.
I opened it.
The page contained several names, dates, and payment amounts.
Sarah Bennett.
Harold Whitmore.
Vanessa Bennett.
And finally:
*Michael Bennett — Prospective Guardian Authorization.*
Beside my name was a date.
Six years earlier.
The year Sarah died.
Below it, someone had written:
*Guardian refused. No financial participation.*
I frowned.
"What does this mean?""
Lily spoke quietly.
"Sarah wanted you to become my legal father.""
I stopped breathing.
"What?""
"She had started the adoption paperwork. She wanted you to adopt me after we got married.""
I sat down.
"She never told me.""
"I know.""
"Why?""
"Because Harold threatened to expose something about your past.""
I stared at the photograph.
"What could he possibly know about me?""
Lily took a breath.
"Sarah believed Harold had records showing that you had received money from him.""
My stomach tightened.
"I've never received money from that man.""
"That's what Sarah believed too. But she couldn't understand why your name was in his files.""
I looked toward Vanessa.
She suddenly turned away.
"Lily, did Sarah find the original ledger?""
"Yes. But there are pages missing.""
"Which pages?""
"The ones containing the financial transactions involving you.""
I closed my eyes.
Sarah had known something.
Something serious enough to keep Lily's existence hidden from me.
"Where is the storage unit?""
"I'll send you the address. But Dad?""
"Yes?""
"There's a photograph of you inside.""
"What photograph?""
"One taken before you met Sarah.""
I frowned.
"That's impossible. I barely have any photographs from that time.""
"That's why I'm calling.""
The line went quiet.
Then Lily whispered:
"Harold knew you before Sarah did.""
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Across the room, Vanessa was putting papers into her handbag.
"Where do you think you're going?""
She froze.
"Home.""
"This is your home.""
"Not anymore, apparently.""
I stood.
"Tell me what you know about Harold.""
She shook her head.
"Nothing.""
"Don't insult me.""
Vanessa looked at the photograph on my phone.
Her expression changed.
"You spoke to Lily.""
"Yes.""
"Then she's already told you lies.""
"Why is my name in Sarah's ledger?""
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Because Sarah believed you were involved.""
"Believed?""
"She found a transfer.""
"What transfer?""
Vanessa walked toward the window.
"Before Sarah met you, Harold hired a private investigator. He was looking for someone who could become a legal guardian for children connected to his business.""
I stared at her.
"Children?""
"Girls whose mothers had signed agreements. Some had no family willing to take responsibility.""
I felt sick.
"Why would I be involved?""
Vanessa turned.
"Because your name appeared on a list of potential guardians.""
I shook my head.
"I've never signed anything.""
"Sarah found your name. She thought you had been selected without your knowledge.""
"Selected for what?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Why did you marry me?""
Her face crumpled.
For a moment, I thought she might tell me the truth.
Instead, she whispered:
"Because Sarah asked me to.""
I froze.
"What?""
"Before she died, she contacted me.""
I stared at her.
"You're lying.""
"She knew she was sick. She wanted someone to help take care of Maya.""
"Why would she choose you?""
"Because we knew each other.""
I laughed in disbelief.
"You expect me to believe Sarah asked you to marry me?""
Vanessa looked down.
"She asked me to keep an eye on you. She thought Harold might come back.""
My head began spinning.
"Did you ever intend to tell me?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Then my phone rang again.
This time it was Detective Harris.
"Mr. Bennett, we need you to come to the station.""
"Why?""
"We've received a report from the bank. Someone has attempted to transfer money from your joint account.""
"Who?""
"Your wife.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
She was already holding her handbag.
The detective continued.
"There's another issue. The account receiving the money belongs to a company registered under your name.""
I felt cold.
"What company?""
He gave me the name.
I recognized it immediately.
Bennett Family Consulting.
"What's happening?""
"We believe someone has been using your identity to authorize financial transactions.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She finally stopped pretending.
And then she said:
"Michael, before you go to the police, you need to understand one thing.""
"What?""
She leaned closer.
"Harold doesn't want your daughters.""
I stared at her.
"Then what does he want?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"He wants the person who has been hiding Sarah's original records.""
I swallowed.
"Who?""
May you like
She looked directly into my eyes.
"You.""
