The Hair She Made Her Sell / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: What Sarah Left Behind

I spent the next hour at the police station.

The officers had recovered the vehicle outside Rachel's home.

Inside were photographs, contracts, and a small recording device.

There were also three envelopes.

Each contained a name.

Emma.

Maya.

Michael.

The first two envelopes contained documents related to the hair agreements.

The third contained something different.

A photograph of me.

And a handwritten note.

*Original participant. Outstanding obligation.*

I stared at the words.

"What obligation?""

Detective Harris shook his head.

"We don't know yet.""

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of a document dated eight years earlier.

It was an authorization form.

My name appeared at the bottom.

But the signature was unfamiliar.

I looked at the detective.

"That's not mine.""

He nodded.

"We've already sent it for examination.""

I read the document.

It described a proposed arrangement involving a guardian, a residential facility, and the transfer of financial responsibility for a minor child.

The child's name had been blacked out.

But I could still see the first letter.

L.

Lily.

My hands began shaking.

"Why would my name be here?""

Detective Harris leaned forward.

"That's what we need to establish.""

I stared at the signature.

Then something clicked.

The consulting company that had received the twelve thousand dollars had been owned by my former supervisor.

His name was Thomas Reed.

I remembered him.

He had been fired two years after I left the company for falsifying invoices.

Could he have been involved?

I gave Detective Harris his name.

The detective wrote it down.

Then he placed another photograph on the table.

It showed Sarah and Thomas standing outside the same office building.

I stared.

"How many people knew about this?""

"We're investigating.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"I need to find Sarah's storage unit.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"We have the address from Lily. An officer can accompany you.""

We drove there that afternoon.

The storage facility was on the edge of town, behind a row of industrial warehouses.

Lily was waiting outside unit 214.

When I saw her, I stopped walking.

She looked so much like Sarah that it hurt.

The same dark curls.

The same eyes.

The same small crease between her eyebrows when she was nervous.

She wore a denim jacket and held a cardboard box against her chest.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then she whispered:

"Hi.""

I swallowed.

"Hi, Lily.""

She looked at me.

"You're older than I imagined.""

I laughed weakly.

"So are you.""

Her eyes filled.

"I used to think you didn't want me.""

I stepped forward.

"I'm sorry.""

She shook her head.

"You didn't know.""

I opened my arms.

She hesitated.

Then she stepped into the hug.

For the first time, I held a daughter I hadn't known existed.

And all I could think about was how many years we had lost.

"I'm sorry your mother couldn't tell me," I whispered.

Lily pulled away.

"She tried.""

She unlocked the storage unit.

Inside were several boxes, an old desk, and a metal filing cabinet.

On the wall was a photograph of Sarah holding a little girl.

Lily.

She walked over and touched it.

"She used to tell me stories about you.""

I stared.

"She did?""

"She said you were kind. She said you would always make sure Maya was safe.""

I looked down.

"I failed her.""

Lily shook her head.

"No. Vanessa lied to everyone.""

She opened the first box.

Inside were dozens of letters.

Some were addressed to Lily.

Others were addressed to Maya.

And one was addressed to me.

My name was written in Sarah's handwriting.

I picked it up carefully.

The envelope was sealed.

Lily nodded.

"She wanted you to read it if you ever found the storage unit.""

I opened it.

Michael,

If you're reading this, then something happened that I was desperately trying to prevent.

I need you to know that I didn't meet you by accident.

I stopped.

Lily looked at me.

I continued.

Before I met you, I learned that Harold Whitmore was looking for a family willing to become guardians for children whose mothers had signed private hair-purchase agreements.

I discovered your name in his records.

At first, I thought you were involved.

Then I learned that Thomas Reed had used your employment information without your knowledge.

I looked at Lily.

Thomas Reed.

My former supervisor.

He had created false authorization documents. Harold believed you had agreed to become a financial guarantor.

I contacted you because I wanted to understand what had happened.

But when I met you, I discovered something I never expected.

You were kind. You were honest. And you loved Maya without hesitation.

I fell in love with you.

My eyes blurred.

I wanted to tell you everything.

But Harold threatened to use the false documents against you. He said he would make sure you lost your job and that Maya would be taken away.

I was afraid.

So I kept quiet.

I stopped reading.

My hands were trembling.

Sarah had known about the false documents before we married.

She had known someone was using my identity.

And she had tried to protect me.

I continued.

I ended my agreement with Harold. I took copies of his original ledger.

But I discovered something worse.

Harold doesn't simply purchase hair. He uses the money to create debts and obligations that families cannot easily escape.

He targets mothers who are desperate for help. Then he uses their daughters as leverage.

Vanessa knows about this.

I looked up.

Lily nodded.

"Keep going.""

Vanessa approached me after you and I became serious. She said she wanted to help me protect the girls.

I believed her.

I was wrong.

My chest tightened.

She had already been communicating with Harold.

If anything happens to me, please protect Lily and Maya. Do not trust anyone who claims to have authority over them without independent verification.

And Michael, there is one thing I need you to know.

I turned the page.

The original ledger isn't complete.

I removed the final section because it contains the name of the person who arranged the first false guardianship agreement.

That person is closer to you than you think.

I stopped.

Lily was staring at me.

"There's more," she whispered.

I turned the page.

The final lines were written in darker ink.

If you find the ledger, look behind the photograph of our wedding.

The truth is there.

I love you.

Sarah.

I lowered the letter.

"Our wedding photograph?""

Lily pointed toward the back of the storage unit.

There was a small wooden frame on a shelf.

It showed Sarah and me on our wedding day.

I remembered the photograph.

It had been missing from our house for years.

I took it down.

The back panel was loose.

I carefully removed it.

Inside was a folded sheet of paper.

And a small USB drive.

I opened the paper.

It contained a list of names.

At the top was Harold Whitmore.

Below him was Thomas Reed.

Then Vanessa Bennett.

But the final name made my blood run cold.

*Rachel Collins.*

I looked at Lily.

"Why is your aunt's name here?""

Lily shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I picked up the USB drive.

A label was attached.

*ORIGINAL RECORDING — DO NOT DESTROY.*

Before I could examine it, my phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

"Rachel?""

Her voice was shaking.

"Michael, I need you to listen to me.""

"What happened?""

"I found something in Emma's school bag.""

"What?""

"A letter from Vanessa.""

I frowned.

"What does it say?""

Rachel began crying.

"She says I have to choose.""

"Choose what?""

"Between protecting Emma and telling the police what I know.""

I looked at the name on Sarah's list.

Rachel Collins.

"Rachel, what did you do?""

She was silent.

Then she whispered:

"Michael, I was the person who introduced Vanessa to Harold.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

"Because he promised to help me find Lily's family.""

I froze.

"What?""

Rachel continued, her voice breaking.

"Before you met Sarah, I knew about Lily. I knew Sarah was trying to protect her. And I knew Vanessa had access to Harold.""

I stared at the letter.

"How long have you known?""

Rachel answered through tears.

"Eight years.""

Then she said the sentence that destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

"And Michael, there's something Sarah never told you about your wedding day.""

I swallowed.

"What?""

Rachel whispered:

"Vanessa wasn't the only person who signed a secret agreement that day.""

The call ended.

I looked down at the USB drive in my hand.

Then I looked at Lily.

She had gone completely pale.

"What's wrong?"" I asked.

She pointed to the wedding photograph.

Someone had written a tiny date beneath the frame.

Not our wedding date.

A date three days earlier.

And beside it were two initials.

*M.B.*

Mine.

I turned the photograph over again.

A second sheet of paper had slipped out.

It contained a single sentence.

*Michael Bennett agreed to become the permanent guarantor of all outstanding family obligations.*

I stared at it.

I had never signed that agreement.

May you like

But someone had.

And the signature looked exactly like mine.
