Chapter 13: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
I stared at the document until the words began to blur.
*Michael Bennett agreed to become the permanent guarantor of all outstanding family obligations.*
Beneath it was my signature.
Or something designed to look like it.
Lily stood beside me, holding Sarah's letter.
"Did you sign it?""
"No.""
"Are you sure?""
I looked at her.
"I would remember signing an agreement that made me responsible for debts connected to children being exploited.""
She nodded slowly.
"Then someone forged it.""
I examined the document again.
There was a witness signature beneath mine.
Vanessa Bennett.
And another name.
Rachel Collins.
I felt something inside me break.
Rachel had just admitted she introduced Vanessa to Harold. Now her signature was attached to an agreement that could destroy my life.
I called Detective Harris.
He arrived twenty minutes later with another officer.
He examined the document without touching the signature.
"Where did you find this?""
"Inside the wedding photograph.""
"Who had access to the photograph?""
"Sarah, Vanessa, and possibly Rachel.""
He looked at the USB drive.
"What's this?""
"Sarah's original recording.""
Detective Harris nodded.
"We'll have our forensic team examine it. But first, I want you to understand something. If this document is authentic, it could be used to claim that you accepted financial responsibility for every outstanding agreement Harold made with the family.""
"But I didn't sign it.""
"Then we need to prove that.""
Lily stepped forward.
"There's another box.""
She pointed to a smaller container beneath the desk.
Inside were old bank statements, letters, and a stack of photographs.
At the bottom was a sealed envelope marked:
*FOR MICHAEL — IF THE AGREEMENT IS EVER USED AGAINST HIM.*
I opened it.
Sarah's handwriting filled the page.
Michael,
If Harold is using the agreement against you, then the worst has happened.
Please don't blame yourself.
The signature on that document was copied from the authorization form you signed when we purchased our first home together.
I stopped reading.
I remembered that form.
Sarah had asked me to sign several documents at the solicitor's office. I had trusted her completely.
I discovered that Thomas Reed had access to your employment records and personal documents. He worked with Harold to create false financial obligations.
Vanessa helped them obtain the family information they needed.
But Rachel was not part of the original plan.
I looked at Lily.
"Rachel wasn't involved at first.""
Lily leaned closer.
I continued.
Rachel came to me after Vanessa approached her. She was frightened and desperate to find information about Lily's father. Harold promised he could help.
I told Rachel to stay away from him.
She didn't listen.
The next paragraph was underlined.
Michael, there is a reason I never told you that Lily's biological father was connected to Harold's business.
My throat tightened.
I looked at Lily.
She had stopped breathing.
I continued.
Harold knew Lily's father. He used that relationship to gain access to our family. When I discovered what was happening, I refused to let him use Lily as leverage.
I lowered the letter.
"Who was Lily's father?""
Lily looked at me.
"Mom never told me.""
I swallowed.
"She didn't tell me either.""
Detective Harris examined the remaining papers.
"There's a name here.""
He pointed to a medical record.
The father's name had been written in full.
*Daniel Whitmore.*
Harold's younger brother.
I felt the room tilt.
Lily stared at the paper.
"Harold's brother?""
Detective Harris nodded.
"According to this record, yes.""
Lily sat down.
"Mom said my father died when I was little.""
I looked at her.
"Maybe he did.""
The detective checked the date.
"There's no death certificate attached. We need to verify this.""
A phone vibrated.
It was mine.
A message from Vanessa.
*You need to stop looking. Harold is coming for the original agreement.*
I showed Detective Harris.
He immediately called his team.
Then another message appeared.
*If you want to know what really happened at your wedding, come alone.*
I didn't reply.
Detective Harris took the phone.
"You're not going anywhere alone.""
I looked at Lily.
She was still staring at Daniel Whitmore's name.
"Did you know?"" I asked.
She shook her head.
"No.""
I knelt beside her.
"Whatever happened before you were born, none of it changes who you are.""
She looked at me.
"Do you think Mom loved him?""
"I think she loved you.""
Her eyes filled.
"And you?""
I took her hand.
"I've loved you since the moment I knew you existed. I just didn't know where to find you.""
She began crying.
Detective Harris's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression hardened.
"Mr. Bennett, we've got a problem.""
"What?""
"Vanessa has disappeared.""
I stood.
"Where?""
"Her phone was last detected near the Crown & Glory warehouse.""
He looked at the document again.
"And someone has just accessed the original financial account.""
"Who?""
Detective Harris turned his screen toward me.
The login belonged to a user registered under my name.
May you like
But the access location was not the warehouse.
It was my house.
