The Hair She Made Her Sell / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Baby Nobody Was Supposed to Know About

I read the appointment card again.

Brielle was sixteen.

Sixteen.

I looked at Vanessa.

"What have you done?""

She shook her head.

"Don't judge me before you know everything.""

"Your daughter is pregnant?""

"She was.""

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa sat down heavily.

"She lost the pregnancy.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Whatever anger I felt toward Brielle disappeared beneath the realization that a sixteen-year-old girl had gone through something traumatic.

"Does she know you told me?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She knows I was going to explain.""

"When?""

"Eventually.""

I looked at the appointment card.

"Why was Harold involved?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Because his son, Ethan, was the father.""

I remembered the name.

Harold Whitmore.

The buyer.

The man who had paid for Maya's hair.

The man who had approached Sarah years earlier.

I felt my stomach turn.

"How old is Ethan?""

"Twenty-four.""

I stepped backward.

"He's twenty-four?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Don't look at me like that.""

"He's an adult. Brielle is sixteen.""

"They were in a relationship.""

"That doesn't make it acceptable.""

Vanessa raised her voice.

"You weren't here! You were traveling, working, building your career. I was the one dealing with everything.""

I stared at her.

"Did you report him?""

She didn't answer.

"Vanessa, did you report him?""

She shook her head.

I felt cold all over.

"Why not?""

"Harold said he would help us.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Help you?""

"He offered to pay for the medical bills. He offered to make everything disappear.""

"And in exchange?""

Vanessa looked down.

"Nothing at first.""

"Don't lie.""

She began crying.

"He said he needed the family agreement completed.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

The agreement.

The debt.

The girls.

Everything was connected.

I looked at the appointment card.

"Where is Brielle?""

"At school.""

"Call her.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Please don't involve her.""

"She's already involved. She's your daughter.""

I picked up my phone.

Before I could dial, a voice came from the doorway.

"She's not at school.""

Brielle stood there.

Her eyes were swollen.

She was wearing a jacket over her uniform.

She had clearly been listening.

Vanessa stood.

"Brielle, go upstairs.""

"No.""

"Now.""

Brielle shook her head.

"I'm tired of lying.""

I walked toward her.

"Come sit down.""

She looked at me.

"Are you angry?""

I swallowed.

"No.""

"Even after what happened?""

I shook my head.

"You don't have to explain anything until you're ready.""

She began crying.

Then she sat on the edge of the bed in the office.

Vanessa remained standing.

Brielle looked at her mother.

"Tell him about Ethan.""

Vanessa's face hardened.

"That is enough.""

"Tell him how you introduced us.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"What?""

Brielle wiped her cheeks.

"Mom introduced me to Ethan at a family dinner. She said he was a family friend. He started messaging me afterward.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"You knew he was twenty-four?""

"He's Harold's son.""

"That isn't an answer.""

Vanessa looked away.

Brielle continued.

"At first, he was nice. He bought me gifts. He told me I was mature. He said Mom approved of us.""

My hands curled into fists.

"Did he pressure you?""

Brielle nodded.

"He said if I really loved him, I wouldn't keep secrets.""

She started crying harder.

"Then I found out I was pregnant.""

I sat beside her.

"What did you do?""

"I told Mom.""

"And?""

"She said everything would be okay. She said Harold would help.""

Brielle looked toward the floor.

"But then she started asking me questions about Maya's hair.""

I frowned.

"What questions?""

"She asked whether Maya had ever said she wanted to cut it. She asked whether Maya would agree to sell it.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She didn't deny it.

Brielle continued.

"Mom said the money would pay off Harold's debt. She said if Maya cooperated, Ethan's family would help us.""

I felt sick.

"Did Maya know any of this?""

"No.""

Brielle covered her face.

"I tried to warn her.""

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Mom said if I told you, Ethan would get into trouble. She said Harold would make sure our family lost everything.""

I stood.

"Your family is not losing anything because you tell the truth.""

Brielle shook her head.

"There's something else.""

I waited.

"Ethan gave me a ring.""

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

Inside was a gold ring with a tiny diamond.

I frowned.

"Why are you showing me this?""

"Because he said it was a promise ring.""

She turned it over.

There was a small inscription inside.

*E.W. — FOREVER FAMILY.*

I stared at it.

Then I noticed a folded piece of paper beneath the velvet.

I pulled it out.

It was a photograph of a document.

A marriage agreement.

Not a marriage certificate.

An agreement outlining financial responsibilities between Ethan Whitmore and Brielle Bennett.

At the bottom was Brielle's signature.

But there was another signature.

Vanessa's.

And a third signature.

Harold Whitmore's.

The document stated that Brielle would receive financial support for medical expenses in exchange for confidentiality regarding the relationship and the pregnancy.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You signed this?""

She nodded.

"He said it was to protect Brielle.""

"Protect her from what?""

"From public humiliation.""

I shook my head.

"You protected Ethan.""

Vanessa began crying.

"I was trying to protect my daughter.""

Brielle suddenly stood.

"No, Mom. You were trying to protect yourself.""

Vanessa stared at her.

Brielle's voice trembled.

"You told me I had ruined your life. You said you had to borrow money because of me. Then you made Maya pay for it.""

Vanessa stepped toward her.

"Don't you dare speak to me that way.""

Brielle moved backward.

"You made her cut off the only thing she had left of Sarah.""

Vanessa slapped her hand against the desk.

"Because I had no other choice!""

I stepped between them.

"Enough.""

The room fell silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Pack your things.""

Her mouth fell open.

"What?""

"You are leaving this house.""

"Michael, you can't throw me out.""

"I can make sure the girls are protected while the authorities investigate.""

She stared at me.

Then she laughed.

"You really think you can win against Harold Whitmore?""

I held her gaze.

"I'm not fighting for money.""

She stepped closer.

"Then you don't understand what you're dealing with.""

I reached for the office door.

"Explain it.""

Vanessa looked at Brielle.

Then she said something I never expected.

"Harold didn't choose this family because of Sarah's hair.""

I frowned.

"Then why?""

Vanessa's face became pale.

"Because Sarah stole something from him before she died.""

My heart began pounding.

"What did she steal?""

Vanessa looked toward the filing cabinet.

"His original client ledger.""

I stared at her.

"What ledger?""

"The one containing the names of every girl he ever bought hair from.""

I felt the room go cold.

"Where is it?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Sarah hid it.""

"Where?""

She swallowed.

Then she whispered:

"Inside something she left for Maya.""

I thought about the wooden box upstairs.

The photographs.

The letters.

The old jewelry.

I turned toward the hallway.

But before I could move, my phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered immediately.

"Michael Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"We've located the woman named Lily.""

My heart jumped.

"Where is she?""

"She's safe for the moment. But there's a complication.""

"What complication?""

The detective paused.

"Mr. Whitmore has filed a missing-person report claiming she stole confidential business records from his company.""

I stared at Vanessa.

She was watching me with an expression I couldn't read.

Then Detective Harris continued.

"And there's something else. We've recovered security footage from the salon.""

"What does it show?""

"It shows Vanessa arriving with Maya.""

I swallowed.

"What else?""

"She wasn't alone.""

"Who was with her?""

The detective took a breath.

"Your wife brought another girl into the salon that day.""

I looked at Brielle.

Then at Vanessa.

"Who?""

The detective answered:

"Your niece, Emma.""

Rachel's daughter.

The twelve-year-old girl whose mother had already refused to let her participate.

I felt my blood run cold.

"Was Emma's hair cut?""

"No. But she was taken into a private room.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

The detective's voice became serious.

"Because someone had already prepared a contract in her name.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She slowly lowered her eyes.

Then she whispered:

"Harold was running out of time.""

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

She looked up.

And for the first time, I saw something that resembled genuine terror.

"It means he wasn't trying to buy their hair anymore.""

She swallowed.

"He wanted the girls themselves to sign the next agreement.""

I felt my stomach drop.

My phone vibrated again.

A message from Lily.

*I found Sarah's ledger.*

Then another.

*But Dad, there's a page with your name on it.*

May you like

And finally:

*Sarah wasn't hiding the ledger from Harold. She was hiding it from you.*
