Chapter 14: The Last Deal
We reached my house shortly after sunset.
Two police vehicles were already outside.
The front door stood open.
I stepped out of the car.
"Stay behind me," Detective Harris ordered.
I ignored him and moved toward the entrance.
Inside, the living room looked as though someone had searched it.
Drawers were open.
Photographs lay scattered across the floor.
The wooden box Sarah had left for Maya was missing.
I hurried upstairs.
Maya's bedroom door was open.
Her clothes were untouched, but the small jewelry box on her dresser had disappeared.
I turned toward the detective.
"Someone took Sarah's things.""
He spoke into his radio.
"Check every room. Nobody leaves until we know what was removed.""
A uniformed officer appeared at the end of the hallway.
"Detective, we found something in the study.""
We followed him.
The computer was still on.
A financial transfer page filled the screen.
The destination account belonged to Whitmore Holdings.
The amount was $65,000.
And the authorization was scheduled for midnight.
Detective Harris stared at the screen.
"That's the amount Vanessa borrowed from Harold.""
I leaned closer.
There was a note attached to the transfer.
*Final settlement. Family obligation fulfilled upon delivery of original ledger and designated parties.*
I felt sick.
"Designated parties?""
The detective scrolled down.
Three names appeared.
Maya Bennett.
Emma Collins.
Lily Bennett.
I gripped the edge of the desk.
"He's trying to use them to settle the debt.""
"Not if we stop him.""
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Michael.""
Harold Whitmore's voice was calm.
Almost friendly.
"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""
"Where is Vanessa?""
"She's safe.""
"Where are my daughters?""
A pause.
"Your daughters are not in danger if everyone behaves sensibly.""
I clenched my fist.
"Don't you ever mention them again.""
Harold sighed.
"Your wife made a commitment. You inherited it when you signed the agreement.""
"I never signed anything.""
"Then perhaps you should ask Sarah why she kept the original.""
I glanced at Detective Harris.
He gestured for me to keep him talking.
"What do you want?""
"The ledger.""
"You already have copies.""
"I want the original.""
"Why?""
"Because it contains information that could damage many respectable people.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Respectable?""
"People who made mistakes. People who needed help. People who entered agreements voluntarily.""
"You targeted children.""
"Your wife targeted them. I merely provided a business opportunity.""
My stomach turned.
"You're lying.""
"Am I? Ask Vanessa what she did with the money.""
The call ended.
Detective Harris looked at me.
"Did he give you a location?""
"No.""
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Vanessa was sitting in a chair inside a warehouse.
Her hands were tied.
Behind her stood Harold.
The message read:
*Bring the original ledger. Midnight. No police.*
I showed the detective.
He immediately called for backup.
"We're not sending you alone.""
I shook my head.
"He's expecting me.""
"That's exactly why we're not doing this his way.""
I called Rachel.
She answered immediately.
"Michael?""
"Where are you?""
"At the hospital with Emma.""
"Is she safe?""
"Yes. The police brought her here for protection.""
"Keep her there. Don't leave.""
Rachel began crying.
"I'm sorry.""
"We'll talk later.""
"Michael, please listen. Vanessa told me something before she disappeared.""
"What?""
"She said Harold wasn't planning to keep the girls. He wanted to use them to force Sarah's original agreement back into effect.""
"What agreement?""
"I don't know. But she said the agreement was never about hair.""
I looked at Detective Harris.
"What was it about?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Guardianship.""
The word struck me like a blow.
Before I could ask anything else, she whispered:
"Harold wanted legal control over the girls' future. The hair contracts were just the way he created the debts.""
I closed my eyes.
That explained the false guardian documents.
The payments.
The contracts.
The reason Harold had kept targeting the same family.
He wanted legal leverage over vulnerable girls and their guardians.
And Sarah had stood in his way.
At 11:15 p.m., the police received confirmation that Harold's warehouse was being used to store confidential business records.
Detective Harris arranged surveillance teams around the building.
I carried a copy of the original ledger.
The real one remained hidden in a secure evidence locker.
We approached the warehouse from the rear.
A single light shone through the office window.
Harold stood near a metal desk.
Vanessa sat beside him.
Her hands were no longer tied.
She looked up when I entered.
"Michael.""
Harold smiled.
"You came.""
I placed the copy on the desk.
"Let her go.""
He opened the ledger.
"This isn't the original.""
"How can you tell?""
"Because I know every mark on those pages.""
He looked at me.
"Where is it?""
"Safe.""
Harold sighed.
"Then we're going to have a problem.""
Vanessa stood.
"Michael, give it to him.""
I stared at her.
"Are you serious?""
"Please. You don't understand what he'll do.""
"I understand perfectly.""
Harold closed the ledger.
"Your wife is right. I have documents proving you accepted responsibility for every outstanding family obligation.""
"They're forged.""
"Then explain why your former employer received money.""
"Because Thomas Reed stole my identity.""
Harold smiled.
"Thomas Reed is dead.""
I froze.
"What?""
"He died two years ago. There will be nobody to testify.""
Vanessa looked at Harold.
"Stop.""
He ignored her.
"You see, Michael, Sarah was clever. But she made one mistake.""
"What?""
"She trusted you.""
I stepped closer.
"No. She trusted the wrong people.""
Harold's expression changed.
He reached into his jacket and placed a small envelope on the desk.
Inside was a document with my signature.
But this time, it wasn't a financial agreement.
It was a guardianship transfer.
The names of Maya, Emma, and Lily were listed beneath it.
I felt my blood run cold.
"What is this?""
Harold smiled.
"The final agreement.""
Vanessa began shaking her head.
"No. You said you wouldn't use that.""
Harold turned toward her.
"You signed it.""
"I signed it because you said it was a debt settlement!""
"And you should have read it.""
He pushed the paper toward me.
"Sign the confirmation, and I'll release everyone from the financial obligations.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you know?""
She began crying.
"I didn't know what it meant.""
"Did you sign it?""
She couldn't answer.
Harold placed a pen beside the document.
"Midnight is approaching.""
I looked at the clock.
11:58.
Then I smiled.
Harold frowned.
"What's amusing?""
I reached into my coat and pulled out Sarah's letter.
"She knew you'd try this.""
His face changed.
I continued.
"She also knew you were afraid of the original ledger.""
I placed a second document on the desk.
A police evidence receipt.
"The original ledger isn't hidden anymore. It's already in police custody.""
For the first time, Harold looked frightened.
Then every light in the warehouse came on.
Detective Harris stepped through the main entrance.
"Harold Whitmore, don't move.""
Officers surrounded the room.
Harold raised his hands slowly.
Vanessa collapsed into a chair.
I thought it was over.
Then Detective Harris approached me.
"Michael, we recovered something else from the warehouse.""
"What?""
He handed me a small black folder.
Inside was a list of names.
Not girls.
Not mothers.
Not guardians.
Judges.
Lawyers.
Bank managers.
And at the bottom was a name I recognized.
The family court judge who had approved Vanessa's guardianship over Lily.
Detective Harris looked at me.
"Harold wasn't working alone.""
I stared at the list.
And then I saw the final entry.
*Pending authorization: Maya Bennett — age 14.*

The signature beside it belonged to someone who was supposed to protect her.
Vanessa.
