Chapter 8: The Files in Vanessa's Locked Drawer

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Two officers took photographs of the envelope, the message, and the image of Lily outside our home.

One of them, Detective Harris, listened carefully while I explained everything.

When I finished, he looked at the documents Rachel had brought.

"Mr. Bennett, I want you to understand something. We have several separate issues here.

Possible coercion involving a minor, financial exploitation, and threats. We need evidence connecting them.""

I handed him the salon receipt.

"And this?""

He examined it.

"This is useful.""

"What about the company?""

"We'll investigate it.""

"Can you find Lily?""

He looked at me.

"We can make inquiries, but we need her cooperation if she's an adult.""

"She's being threatened.""

"I understand. But we need to establish where she is and whether she's in immediate danger.""

I gave him her phone number.

He wrote it down.

Then he asked something unexpected.

"Does your wife have access to your financial accounts?""

I nodded.

"Some joint accounts.""

"Have you checked recent transactions?""

I shook my head.

Detective Harris exchanged a glance with his colleague.

"I suggest you do that today.""

After they left, I opened my banking app.

At first, everything looked normal.

Mortgage payments.

Utility bills.

School expenses.

Groceries.

Then I noticed a series of transfers to an account I didn't recognize.

$500.

$800.

$1,200.

The transactions had been made over seven months.

I added them up.

Nearly $19,000.

I showed Rachel.

"Do you recognize this account?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

I called the bank.

After verifying my identity, the representative explained that the account belonged to a business registered under Vanessa's name.

The business was called Bennett Family Consulting.

I had never heard of it.

"Can you tell me when it was opened?""

"Approximately eight months ago.""

"Who authorized the transfers?""

"Both account holders had access to the joint account.""

I ended the call.

Vanessa hadn't simply taken Maya's hair money.

She had been transferring money from our household account for months.

And she had created a business using our family name.

I called my lawyer.

He advised me to preserve the records, protect the children's documents, and avoid confronting Vanessa until we understood the full extent of the situation.

But I needed answers.

There was one place I knew to look.

Vanessa's home office.

She kept a small locked filing cabinet beside her desk.

I had seen it many times.

She always said it contained private business paperwork.

I went upstairs.

The office door was locked.

I tried the handle.

Nothing.

I remembered that Vanessa kept a spare key in the decorative bowl beside the bedroom mirror.

I found it.

The cabinet opened with a small click.

Inside were folders arranged alphabetically.

Contracts.

Bank statements.

Salon receipts.

Photographs.

And a thick folder labeled:

*BENNETT FAMILY — PRIVATE CLIENTS.*

I opened it.

The first document was dated six years earlier.

It contained Sarah's name.

I read the first paragraph.

Supplier agreement between Sarah Bennett and Crown & Glory Private Acquisitions.

My hands went cold.

There was Sarah's signature.

Below it was another signature.

A man named Harold Whitmore.

Mr. H.

I turned the page.

The document explained that Sarah had initially agreed to provide hair samples for a private collection.

But there was a handwritten addition.

*Agreement terminated by supplier. All future family transactions prohibited without direct consent.*

I sat down.

Sarah had stopped the agreement.

She had specifically prohibited future transactions involving her family.

I kept reading.

The next page contained a letter from Sarah.

I will not allow you to contact my daughters again. Neither Lily nor Maya is part of this arrangement. Any further attempt to approach them will be reported.

I stared at the words.

My wife had known.

Sarah had tried to protect both girls.

And Vanessa had somehow brought the same buyer back into our lives.

I turned another page.

A list of names appeared.

Sarah Bennett.

Lily Bennett.

Maya Bennett.

Rachel Collins.

Emma Collins.

The last two names had been added recently.

There were handwritten notes beside each one.

Rachel: Guardian authorization obtained.

Emma: Pending.

Maya: Transaction completed.

Lily: Contract outstanding.

I felt sick.

Then I noticed a separate envelope tucked into the back of the folder.

It contained several photographs.

One showed Sarah sitting in a café with Harold Whitmore.

Another showed Vanessa standing beside him.

But the date on that photograph was impossible.

It was taken three months after Sarah died.

I stared at it.

Vanessa had met Harold after Sarah's death.

She had continued the relationship despite Sarah's warning.

There was also a handwritten note.

*The family has already been identified. Michael must remain uninformed.*

I heard footsteps in the hallway.

I quickly put the photographs back.

The office door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Her face changed when she saw the open cabinet.

"What are you doing?""

I stood slowly.

"Looking for the truth.""

She dropped her handbag.

"You had no right to touch my private files.""

"These files contain my daughter's name.""

"They're business documents.""

"Business documents involving children?""

Vanessa walked toward the desk.

"Give me the folder.""

"No.""

"Michael, don't make this worse.""

I held up Sarah's letter.

"Did you know she had ended this agreement?""

Vanessa stopped.

"Where did you find that?""

"Right here.""

She stared at the page.

Then she laughed nervously.

"Sarah was unstable toward the end. She didn't understand the arrangement.""

"She understood enough to prohibit you from approaching her daughters.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"She was selfish.""

I stared at her.

"She was protecting her children.""

"She was protecting herself.""

"Why did you bring Harold back into our lives?""

Vanessa looked away.

I stepped closer.

"Why did you sell Maya's hair?""

She finally snapped.

"Because someone had to pay!""

I went still.

"Pay for what?""

She pressed her palms against the desk.

"You think everything is easy? You think money appears because you work a few hours and come home? You have no idea what I've been dealing with.""

"Then explain.""

She looked at me.

For the first time, tears appeared in her eyes.

"I borrowed money from Harold.""

"How much?""

"Forty thousand dollars.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"To save the business.""

"What business?""

She hesitated.

Then she opened a drawer and pulled out a document.

It was a loan agreement.

The amount was actually $65,000.

And beneath the repayment terms was a clause that made my stomach turn.

*In the event of default, the borrower agrees to provide access to designated family suppliers until the outstanding balance is settled.*

I looked at her.

"You used our daughters as collateral?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I didn't think he'd enforce it.""

I slammed the document onto the desk.

"He's already enforced it!""

She began crying.

"I had no choice.""

"You always had a choice.""

She wiped her face.

Then she said something that stopped me cold.

"Michael, I didn't borrow the money for myself.""

I stared at her.

"Then who?""

She looked toward the door.

"Brielle.""

My jaw tightened.

"What does Brielle have to do with a sixty-five-thousand-dollar loan?""

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"She wasn't supposed to get pregnant.""

The room went silent.

I stared at my wife.

"What?""

Vanessa reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded medical appointment card.

She placed it on the desk.

"That's why I needed the money.""

I looked at the card.

It belonged to a private clinic.

The appointment date was six weeks earlier.

The patient's name was Brielle.

And underneath the appointment details was a handwritten note:

*FOLLOW-UP — CONFIRM PATERNITY.*

I looked up.

"Why does Brielle need a paternity test?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

May you like

Then she whispered:

"Because the baby's father is Harold Whitmore's son.""
