Chapter 5: The Secret My Sister Kept
My sister, Rachel, lived twenty minutes away.
She was a single mother, raising twelve-year-old Emma after her divorce.
Rachel and I had always been close.
When Sarah died, Rachel was the first person to help me take care of Maya. She brought meals, helped with school pickups, and spent countless weekends making sure my daughter never felt alone.
She had even been the one who recommended Vanessa when I started dating again.
I had trusted her.
That was why Vanessa's message disturbed me so much.
I called Rachel.
She answered on the fourth ring.
"Michael?""
"Where's Emma?""
"At school. Why?""
"I need to see you.""
There was a pause.
"Is Maya okay?""
"She's safe. I need you to answer something.""
"What?""
"Have you made any agreements with Vanessa concerning Emma?""
Rachel went quiet.
Then she said:
"Why are you asking me that?""
"Because Vanessa sent me a photograph of Emma and suggested you know something about a hair transaction.""
I heard Rachel take a sharp breath.
"Michael, where are you?""
"At home.""
"Don't come here. I'll come to you.""
"Rachel—"
"Please. Just wait for me.""
She ended the call.
I stood in the kitchen, staring at my phone.
Brielle came downstairs.
"Was that Aunt Rachel?""
"Yes.""
"Is Emma involved?""
"I don't know yet.""
Brielle sat down.
For several minutes, she said nothing.
Then she looked at me.
"Can I tell you something without you getting angry?""
I pulled out the chair opposite her.
"Of course.""
"Mom told me Emma had beautiful hair.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with anything?""
"She said it was even thicker than Maya's. She said people would pay a lot for it.""
My stomach tightened.
"When did she say that?""
"About two months ago.""
"Did she ever talk to Emma about cutting it?""
Brielle nodded.
"She told her she could get a makeover.""
I closed my eyes.
A makeover.
That was what Vanessa called it when she wanted to disguise something cruel as a gift.
"Did Emma agree?""
"I don't think so. She told Mom she wanted to keep her hair long.""
I stood up.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Brielle began crying.
"Because Mom said it was none of my business. And because I thought she was just talking.""
I looked at her.
"Listen to me. You are not responsible for what your mother does.""
She nodded, wiping her face.
The doorbell rang.
Rachel stood outside.
Her eyes were swollen.
She was holding a thick manila envelope.
I opened the door.
"Come in.""
She stepped inside and immediately looked toward the staircase.
"Where's Maya?""
"Upstairs.""
"Can I see her?""
"After we talk.""
Rachel lowered her head.
We sat at the dining table.
She placed the envelope between us.
"I should have told you earlier.""
My chest tightened.
"What is it?""
"Documents.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of bank transfers, printed messages, and a contract bearing Vanessa's signature.
I read the first page.
It was an agreement involving a company called Crown & Glory Hair Exchange.
The document listed Maya's full name.
Below it was a second name.
Emma.
Both girls were described as potential suppliers of untreated natural hair.
I looked up.
"What the hell is this?""
Rachel covered her face.
"Vanessa told me it was a modeling opportunity.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"She said the company needed young girls for promotional photographs. She said they would receive money for appearing in advertisements.""
"Then why is Emma listed as a hair supplier?""
Rachel shook her head.
"She told me it was just paperwork.""
I slammed the document onto the table.
"Did you sign this?""
Rachel began crying.
"Yes.""
I stood.
"Rachel!""
"I know!""
She raised her voice.
"I know what it looks like. I made a terrible mistake.""
"Did you give Vanessa permission to cut Emma's hair?""
"No!""
"Did you know Maya's hair had already been sold?""
"I found out yesterday.""
I stared at her.
"Yesterday?""
Rachel nodded.
"Vanessa called me. She said there had been a misunderstanding at the salon. She said Maya had changed her mind.""
I felt sick.
"And you believed her?""
Rachel looked down.
"Not completely.""
She opened the envelope and pulled out another page.
It was a bank transfer.
$2,000.
The payment had come from Vanessa.
"What is this?""
Rachel wiped her cheeks.
"She told me it was a deposit for Emma's modeling work.""
I looked at the date.
The money had been transferred two weeks before Maya's haircut.
"Did you spend it?""
"No. I was suspicious, so I left it untouched.""
"Why didn't you call me?""
Rachel began sobbing.
"Because Vanessa told me you already knew.""
I froze.
"What?""
"She said you had approved everything. She said you wanted Maya to learn responsibility and that you agreed the girls could earn their own money.""
I gripped the back of the chair.
Vanessa had been using my name.
She had made Rachel believe I was part of the arrangement.
"Did you speak to Emma about it?""
Rachel nodded.
"She told me she didn't want to participate. Vanessa said the opportunity would help pay for her school expenses.""
I looked at the contract again.
There was a clause near the bottom.
The agreement required the guardian to provide a minimum length of hair at a future appointment.
But beneath that was something much more disturbing.
*If the agreed source becomes unavailable, the purchaser reserves the right to pursue alternative compensation from the contracting guardian.*
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Rachel.
"Did you know what this meant?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't understand the legal language.""
I picked up my phone.
"You're coming with me to the police station.""
Rachel nodded.
Then she grabbed my arm.
"Michael, there's something else.""
"What?""
"Vanessa told me the buyer wasn't just purchasing hair.""
I stared at her.
"What was he purchasing?""
Rachel looked toward the window.
"She said he wanted a particular family.""
My stomach dropped.
"What family?""
"Yours.""
I couldn't speak.
Rachel continued.
"She said the buyer had been looking for girls with a specific type of natural hair. She told me that Maya and Emma were perfect because they were related.""
I looked at the contract.
Then I noticed a handwritten note attached to the final page.
It contained three names.
Maya.
Emma.
And a third name.
*Sarah Bennett.*
My late wife's name.
I stared at the handwriting.
"Why is Sarah's name here?""
Rachel looked horrified.
"I don't know.""
Then she leaned closer and whispered:
"Vanessa asked me last month whether Sarah had any other daughters.""
I felt the room tilt.
"Why would she ask that?""
Rachel shook her head.
"I thought she was just curious.""
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
*Your sister has already received her payment. Don't pretend she knows nothing.*
I showed Rachel.
She started shaking.
Then another message arrived.
This one included a photograph of a document.
A birth certificate.
I recognized the name immediately.
Sarah Bennett.
But the child's name beneath it wasn't Maya.
It was someone I had never heard of.
May you like
*Lily Bennett.*
And the date of birth was four years before Maya was born.
