Chapter 10: The Name Beneath the Photograph

The phone slipped slightly in Marcus’s hand.

For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

The voice was gone.

The call had ended.

But the final sentence remained.

Ask Maya why her mother never told her who her real father was.

The words echoed louder than the music ever had.

Maya watched her father’s face.

She didn’t need anyone to explain.

Something had changed.

Something had broken open.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked at her.

And the fear in his eyes told her everything.

Not the truth.

But that there was a truth.

A painful one.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Who was it?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

“You knew.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“No.””

“You knew this was coming.””

“I knew someone would try to expose the past.””

Maya stepped back.

“The past?””

Nobody noticed Mr. Cole quietly taking the photograph from the table.

He studied the back.

Then froze.

“Marcus.””

Everyone turned.

The attorney held the picture.

“There’s something written here.””

Marcus walked over.

Mr. Cole pointed at the handwriting.

The faded ink was almost impossible to read.

But one sentence remained clear.

*“The truth belongs to Maya when she is old enough to choose what to do with it.””*

Maya stared.

“My mother wrote that?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

“About my father?””

The question hung in the air.

Nobody wanted to answer.

Finally, Marcus sat down.

“Maya…”

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“Don’t say you were protecting me.””

Marcus stopped.

The words hurt because they were true.

Maya looked at him.

“I spent my whole life believing one thing about myself.””

She touched the necklace around her neck.

The one her mother had given her before she passed.

“I believed I knew where I came from.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“And now?””

“Now I don’t know anything.””

The silence was unbearable.

Vanessa looked away.

Because she understood.

She had spent months making Maya feel powerless.

But this was different.

This was her entire identity being questioned.

Mr. Cole placed the photograph down.

“We need facts.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.””

“No assumptions.””

“Yes.””

“No accusations.””

Marcus stared.

“Then start with the truth.””

The attorney nodded.

“Years ago, Elena created a private file.””

“A file about Maya?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Mr. Cole looked uncomfortable.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“The file disappeared after Elena died.””

Marcus frowned.

“I searched everything.””

“You searched what you knew existed.””

The sentence bothered him.

Because it was true.

Elena had always been careful.

She planned everything.

She left instructions.

She created backups.

And if she had hidden something…

She had hidden it for a reason.

Maya looked at Vanessa.

“You knew my mom better than I thought.””

Vanessa didn’t defend herself.

“Yes.””

“Did she tell you who my father was?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

Then back at Maya.

“She told me enough.””

Maya’s eyes filled.

“Enough?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She told me your biological father was someone dangerous.””

Marcus immediately stood.

“Stop.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t get to silence me anymore.””

“Maya doesn’t need this tonight.””

“She needed it years ago.””

The words cut deep.

Marcus looked away.

Because he knew Vanessa was right about one thing.

Maya had deserved honesty.

Vanessa continued.

“Your mother was afraid that if the truth came out, people would come after you.””

“People like who?””

Vanessa looked toward the darkness beyond the backyard.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus stared.

“You know more than you’re saying.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Mr. Cole stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at him.

“There is a bigger issue.””

He held up the transfer document.

“The person who forged Maya’s signature had access to private information.””

Marcus nodded.

“Which means someone close.””

“Yes.””

Maya looked at the photograph.

Then at her father.

“Who was my father?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

A long silence followed.

Then he whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Maya froze.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“How can you not know?””

Marcus’s voice broke.

“Because your mother never told me his name.””

That shocked everyone.

Even Vanessa.

“You’re lying.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I’m not.””

“Then why did you raise Maya?””

“Because Elena asked me to.””

The answer silenced the backyard.

Maya stared.

“What?””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

“Your mother came to me before you were born.””

His eyes filled.

“She told me she trusted me.””

Maya whispered:

“Why?””

“Because she knew I would love you like my own.””

The tears came faster now.

“Like your own?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You are my daughter.””

“But not by blood.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

“But by every choice I ever made.””

Maya looked away.

The truth was painful.

But somehow, hearing his voice made it worse.

Because she believed him.

And that was confusing.

Mr. Cole suddenly looked at the photograph again.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

He pointed at the image.

“There’s something wrong.””

“What?””

“The woman standing beside Elena.””

Marcus looked.

“What about her?””

Mr. Cole zoomed in on the photograph using his phone.

“She isn’t just anyone.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You recognize her?””

The attorney nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

Mr. Cole looked at Marcus.

“She’s the person who filed the first estate inquiry after Elena died.””

Marcus went cold.

“Who?””

The attorney looked at the photograph.

Then said the name.

A name Maya had never heard before.

May you like

But Marcus had.

Because it belonged to someone he thought had disappeared forever.
