Chapter 5: The Letter From a Mother
The envelope sat on the table between them like it was alive.
Nobody spoke.
The string lights above them flickered softly in the evening breeze.
For everyone else, it was just a piece of paper.
For Marcus, it was a voice from the past.
A voice he thought he would never hear again.
Maya stared at it.
“She wrote that for me?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“I think so.””
“You think?””
His daughter’s voice cracked.
“You don’t know?””
Marcus looked down.
And that answer hurt more than anything.
“I didn’t know it existed.””
Vanessa looked away.
Maya noticed.
“You did.””
Vanessa said nothing.
“Maya,” Marcus said, “there are things about your mother’s estate that I should have explained.””
She looked at him.
“Why didn’t you?””
The question wasn’t angry.
That made it worse.
Marcus sat down.
“Because I thought I was protecting you.””
Maya shook her head.
“Everyone says that.””
The words landed.
Hard.
Marcus looked at her.
She wiped her face.
“Vanessa said she was protecting the family. You said you were protecting me. But I was the only person who didn’t know what was happening.””
Nobody interrupted.
Because she was right.
Marcus slowly opened the envelope.
The paper inside was old.
Carefully preserved.
His hands shook as he unfolded it.
He read the first line silently.
Then stopped.
“What?””
Maya asked.
Marcus looked at her.
“It’s addressed to you.””
He handed her the letter.
Maya hesitated.
Her fingers touched the page.
The handwriting was real.
Her mother’s.
A mother she remembered only in pieces.
A voice from old recordings.
A perfume bottle still sitting in a drawer.
A photograph beside her bed.
She began reading.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then tears fell.
“She knew.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“What?””
Maya looked up.
“She knew someone would try to take the house.””
Everyone went silent.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Mr. Cole watched carefully.
Maya continued reading.
“She wrote that the house was never just a house.””
Marcus swallowed.
Elena had always believed that.
The home represented stability.
A place Maya could return to no matter what happened.
Maya kept reading.
Then her expression shifted.
“Dad…”
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
She looked confused.
“There’s a name here.””
His heart dropped.
“What name?””
Maya turned the letter toward him.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Not Elena’s signature.
Another name.
Marcus recognized it immediately.
The same name on the transfer document.
Vanessa watched his face.
“You know who it is.””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Maya stood.
“Dad.””
He looked at his daughter.
And he knew he couldn’t hide anymore.
“The name belongs to someone who worked with your mother.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“Someone you knew.””
Maya frowned.
“I knew them?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, stop.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You wanted the truth.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
Mr. Cole interrupted.
“Marcus, before this goes further, you should know something.””
“What?””
“The transfer request wasn’t signed by Elena alone.””
Maya froze.
“What does that mean?””
Mr. Cole looked at the paperwork.
“There were two signatures.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Two?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked toward the attorney.
“You weren’t supposed to find that.””
The sentence escaped before she could stop it.
Everyone heard it.
Marcus slowly turned.
“You just admitted you knew.””
Vanessa went quiet.
The backyard felt like it had lost all oxygen.
Marcus stepped toward her.
“How long have you been planning this?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt Maya.””
“Then what were you trying to do?””
She didn’t answer.
Maya looked at her.
“For months you made me feel like I was stealing something that belonged to you.””
Vanessa finally looked at her.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Maya replied.
“I don’t.””
Her voice trembled.
“Because nobody tells me anything.””
That was the moment Vanessa lost control.
Her perfect image cracked.
“You think you’re the only one who lost something?””
Everyone went still.
Vanessa’s eyes filled with years of anger.
“I lost a family too.””
Marcus stared.
“What are you talking about?””
She looked at Maya.
Then at the letter.
Then whispered:
“Your mother knew.””
Marcus stepped back.
“Knew what?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“She knew why I married you.””
The words hung in the air.
Maya looked at her father.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
And for the first time that night, he looked uncertain.
Because there was a possibility he had misunderstood everything.
Mr. Cole reached into the folder again.
“I found one more document.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What document?””
The attorney slowly removed a sealed page.
“This one was hidden behind the original trust papers.””
Maya watched as her father opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then widened.
Because the document contained a date.
May you like
A date from before Vanessa ever entered their lives.
And beneath it was a sentence that changed the meaning of everything.
