Chapter 11: The Woman Who Returned

Marcus repeated the name quietly.

“No.””

Mr. Cole looked at him.

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa watched him.

“You know her.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

Maya noticed.

“Dad.””

He looked at her.

And she saw it again.

That hesitation.

That fear.

“You know everyone except me.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I knew her a long time ago.””

“Who is she?””

Mr. Cole answered.

“Her name is Camille Brooks.””

The name meant nothing to Maya.

But it meant everything to the adults standing around her.

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“She came back.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Because every time I tried to talk about the past, you shut the door.””

Marcus looked away.

Because she was right.

He had spent years avoiding anything connected to Elena’s final days.

Not because he didn’t care.

Because he cared too much.

Maya looked between them.

“Who is Camille?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Marcus said:

“She was your mother’s closest friend.””

Maya waited.

“And?””

Marcus struggled.

“And she was there the night Elena died.””

The words felt heavy.

Maya’s expression changed.

“Why have I never heard of her?””

Marcus looked at the ground.

“Because after that night, she disappeared.””

Mr. Cole nodded.

“Until the estate inquiry.””

Maya looked confused.

“Why would she come back years later?””

The attorney held up the transfer documents.

“Because someone connected to this estate started making moves.””

Marcus looked at the papers.

“Camille submitted the inquiry?””

“Yes.””

“And now someone is forging Maya’s signature.””

“Yes.””

Maya crossed her arms.

“So she’s the person behind this?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence bothered her.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You all do this every time.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Do what?””

“Act like the truth is too dangerous for me.””

Her voice rose.

“I’m the person this is happening to.””

Nobody moved.

Maya wiped her face.

“I lost my mom. I lost years with her. I lost the chance to ask her questions.””

She pointed toward the folder.

“And now I’m losing my own story.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Maya.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“I need answers.””

Marcus nodded.

“You’re right.””

The agreement surprised her.

He continued:

“No more secrets.””

Mr. Cole opened the folder.

“Then we need to find Camille.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She won’t come willingly.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena knew something about her.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then reached into her purse again.

She removed another item.

A key.

Old.

Silver.

Maya stared.

“What is that?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Elena gave me this the week before she died.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she told me not to.””

The anger returned to his face.

“Everyone keeps using Elena’s name to justify hiding things.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I should only give this to Maya when she was ready.””

Maya stared at the key.

“Ready for what?””

Vanessa placed it in her hand.

“To see what your mother left behind.””

The key felt cold.

Heavy.

Like it carried a secret.

Mr. Cole looked closely.

“There’s an engraving.””

Maya turned it.

Three letters were carved into the metal.

E.C.B.

Marcus saw it.

And his face changed.

Maya noticed.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

Marcus looked at the key.

Then at Vanessa.

“That’s not Elena’s.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why does it have her initials?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Because Elena wanted Maya to find out who she really was.””

Maya looked down.

The key suddenly felt different.

Not like a gift.

Like a doorway.

A doorway into a life she never knew existed.

Marcus took a step back.

“We need to leave.””

Maya looked at him.

“Where?””

Before he could answer, a car door slammed outside the mansion gate.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood beyond the lights.

Older.

Elegant.

Watching them.

Mr. Cole went pale.

“It’s her.””

Marcus froze.

Maya looked at the stranger.

“Camille?””

The woman walked closer.

Her eyes never left Marcus.

May you like

Then she said:

“I was wondering how long it would take you to find the truth.””
