The House She Tried to Steal / Chapter 3 / 15

Chapter 3: The Name Hidden in the Papers

The backyard lights continued glowing above them, beautiful and completely out of place.

Maya stood beside her father, staring at him.

Not at Vanessa.

At him.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked at his daughter.

He saw the fear in her eyes.

The same fear she had carried while holding those dirty plates.

The same fear she had carried alone.

“Maya…”

But he stopped.

Because he didn’t know how to explain something he had spent years trying to bury.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“There it is.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Don’t.””

But Vanessa wasn’t smiling anymore.

She looked wounded.

Angry.

Like someone who believed she had finally found a weapon.

“You always acted like I was the problem,” she said.

“But you never told her everything.””

Maya’s voice became smaller.

“Everything about what?””

Marcus took a breath.

Mr. Cole stepped closer.

“Marcus, perhaps we should discuss this somewhere private.””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“No more private conversations where everyone decides what I can handle.””

Her father looked at her.

And something inside him broke.

Because she was right.

He had spent years protecting Maya from pain.

But sometimes protection became another kind of silence.

Marcus sat down at the patio table and placed the folder in front of him.

“Maya, your mother created the trust because she wanted you to have something safe.””

Maya listened.

“She knew she was sick. She knew there were things she wouldn’t be able to control.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus continued.

“But before she passed, she made me promise something.””

Maya whispered:

“What?””

“That I would never let anyone make you feel like you didn’t belong.””

The words hit her.

Because that was exactly how she had felt.

Like a guest in her own home.

Like someone who had to earn kindness.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

A short, bitter sound.

“Interesting.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“She made you promise that?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell Maya about the second document?””

The backyard became silent again.

Marcus looked at Mr. Cole.

The attorney lowered his eyes.

Maya noticed.

“Second document?””

Her father didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Maya stepped back.

“What second document?””

Marcus reached for the folder.

“There isn’t another ownership document.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“Not ownership.””

She looked at Maya.

“Something else.””

Mr. Cole’s expression became serious.

“Vanessa, you need to stop.””

But she walked closer.

“You deserve to know why your mother was so desperate to protect that house.””

Maya’s eyes filled with confusion.

“My mom?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s voice softened.

Too softly.

“I know you think everyone loved you enough to tell you everything.””

Marcus stood.

“Don’t talk about her mother.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“But sometimes people hide things because the truth changes everything.””

Marcus looked at Mr. Cole.

“Did she get access to those files?””

The attorney’s silence answered.

Maya looked between them.

“What files?””

Mr. Cole finally spoke.

“After Elena passed, there were sealed documents related to the estate.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

He knew where this was going.

Vanessa had not just been trying to take the house.

She had been searching for something inside the estate.

Something Elena left behind.

A note.

A record.

A truth.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What did you find?””

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

Only for a second.

But everyone saw it.

“I found enough to know you’ve been lying.””

Maya’s voice trembled.

“Dad?””

Marcus reached toward her.

But she stepped back.

Not because she didn’t love him.

Because she was scared.

Mr. Cole opened the folder again.

“There’s something else Marcus needs to see.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

Marcus looked at the attorney.

“What?””

Mr. Cole slowly removed a final paper from the black folder.

“This was attached to the transfer request.””

Marcus took it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The color drained from his face.

Maya whispered:

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

Because at the bottom of the document was a signature.

A name.

A name that should have been impossible.

A name that changed everything.

Vanessa watched him read it.

And for the first time that night, she looked afraid.

Marcus slowly lifted his eyes.

“Where did you get this?””

Mr. Cole looked at him.

“From the transfer paperwork submitted yesterday.””

Marcus stared at the signature.

Then at Vanessa.

May you like

Because the person who tried to take Maya’s house had not acted alone.

And the name on that document belonged to someone Maya never expected to see again.
