Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Plan
Marcus read the sentence again.
Then again.
As if the words would rearrange themselves into something easier.
They didn’t.
Maya watched her father’s face.
She had seen him angry.
She had seen him tired.
She had seen him scared when her mother was sick.
But she had never seen him look betrayed.
“What does it say?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
He looked up.
The pain in his eyes frightened her.
“It says Vanessa was connected to your mother’s estate before we met.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“That’s not what it means.””
Mr. Cole looked at her.
“It is exactly what it means.””
Marcus held the paper.
“Elena knew you.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Maya looked confused.
“You knew my mom?””
Vanessa’s face softened for the first time.
Only slightly.
“Yes.””
Maya stepped back.
“How?””
Vanessa looked at the mansion.
At the party.
At the people watching her fall apart.
Then she whispered:
“Because before I was your stepmother, I was your mother’s friend.””
The revelation changed the room.
Marcus stared.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You never asked enough questions.””
“You told me you met me through work.””
“I did.””
“But you never told me you knew Elena.””
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“Because I knew what would happen if I told you.””
Maya looked between them.
“What would happen?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus lowered the paper.
“You used my wife’s death.””
Vanessa flinched.
“No.””
“You entered this family knowing everything.””
“I entered this family because I cared.””
Maya shook her head.
“Then why did you threaten me?””
Vanessa looked at her.
And for a moment, she had no answer.
That silence said more than words.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You weren’t protecting her.””
Vanessa looked away.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
“No, you don’t!””
Her voice finally broke.
The guests watched silently.
Vanessa took a breath.
“I watched Elena make decisions that destroyed everyone around her.””
Marcus stared.
“What decisions?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then looked at Maya.
“Your mother left something behind.””
Maya’s stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Something valuable.””
“The house?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Marcus looked at Mr. Cole.
The attorney nodded slowly.
“There were references to another asset.””
Maya frowned.
“Another asset?””
Marcus looked through the folder.
There was nothing else.
No information.
Only hints.
Clues.
Like someone had intentionally hidden pieces of a puzzle.
Vanessa watched him.
“She trusted you with the house.””
Marcus looked at her.
“And?””
“She didn’t trust you with everything.””
The words hurt.
Because part of him wondered if they were true.
Elena had always been private.
Even with him.
Especially when she was sick.
Mr. Cole stepped forward.
“Marcus, I believe Vanessa’s involvement may explain the transfer attempt.””
“How?””
“She wasn’t trying to steal the house.””
Everyone looked at him.
“She was trying to force access to the full estate records.””
Maya’s voice lowered.
“Why?””
The attorney looked at Vanessa.
“Because something is missing.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“What?””
Mr. Cole opened the folder and removed the final page.
A property inventory.
A list of assets.
One line had been blacked out.
Marcus stared.
“Who removed this?””
The attorney answered quietly.
“That’s what I was trying to determine.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Because she knew.
Marcus noticed.
“You know what’s missing.””
She didn’t respond.
“Maya.””
The girl looked at him.
“Stay close to me.””
Vanessa gave a sad smile.
“You still don’t get it.””
Marcus turned.
“Get what?””
She looked at Maya.
“The person who took that information wasn’t trying to hurt her.””
The statement made no sense.
Until Vanessa added:
“They were trying to protect her.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at the document.
“The transfer wasn’t about stealing the house.””
“Then what was it about?””
She slowly reached into her purse.
Everyone tensed.
But she didn’t pull out a weapon.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
With Maya’s name written on it.
Marcus stared.
“Where did you get that?””
Vanessa looked at Maya.
“Your mother gave it to me.””
Maya stopped breathing.
“My mother?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She told me to keep it hidden until the day someone tried to take everything from you.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
Vanessa held it tighter.
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because if you open this, you’ll finally learn why Elena never wanted you to know the truth.””
Maya looked at the envelope.
Her name.
Her mother’s handwriting.
Another secret.
Another piece of a life everyone had kept from her.
Then Vanessa whispered the words that made Marcus go completely still:
“Your mother didn’t leave this house to you because she loved you.””
A pause.
“She left it to you because she was afraid of what would happen if you lost it.””
The envelope shook in Vanessa’s hand.
And before anyone could reach her, she said:
“The person Elena was protecting you from…”
May you like
She looked directly at Marcus.
“…was someone standing in this backyard tonight.”” :::
