Chapter 12: The Woman With Elena’s Secret
Camille Brooks entered the backyard slowly.
She didn’t rush.
She didn’t apologize.
She walked like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
Maya watched her carefully.
There was something familiar about her.
Not her face.
Something else.
The way she looked at the house.
The way her eyes softened when she saw Elena’s photographs inside through the glass doors.
Like she belonged to a memory.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Why are you here?””
Camille looked at him.
“Because you finally opened the door.””
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“You disappeared.””
Camille nodded.
“Yes.””
“You left Elena.””
Pain crossed her face.
“I didn’t leave her.””
“Then where were you?””
She looked at Maya.
And the question changed.
“I was protecting her.””
Maya frowned.
“Protecting who?””
Camille looked at her.
“You.””
The answer stunned everyone.
Marcus immediately shook his head.
“Don’t.””
Camille looked at him.
“You still think silence saves people.””
The words were familiar.
Too familiar.
Maya noticed.
“You knew my mother.””
Camille smiled sadly.
“I loved your mother.””
Marcus looked away.
Maya caught that.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Camille reached into her coat.
Everyone tensed.
But she pulled out a small notebook.
Old.
Worn.
She placed it on the table.
“Elena kept records.””
Marcus looked at it.
“Where did you get that?””
“She gave it to me.””
“Before she died?””
Camille nodded.
“She knew she didn’t have much time.””
Maya touched the notebook.
“My mom wrote this?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Camille looked down.
“Because Elena asked me not to.””
Maya closed her eyes.
Another secret.
Another person who claimed it was for her own good.
Camille noticed her expression.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
Maya looked at her.
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
Camille’s voice softened.
“You’re thinking everyone loved you enough to protect you, but not enough to trust you.””
Maya said nothing.
Because it was exactly what she felt.
Camille opened the notebook.
Inside were pages of handwriting.
Dates.
Names.
Notes.
Mr. Cole looked over.
“These are estate records.””
Marcus stared.
“Elena kept all of this?””
Camille nodded.
“She knew someone would come after the house.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who?””
Camille turned the notebook around.
One page had a name circled.
A name written by Elena herself.
Marcus read it.
Then went completely still.
Maya looked.
“Who is it?””
Marcus couldn’t speak.
Camille answered.
“The person who has been manipulating everything.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Who?””
Camille looked at all of them.
Then said:
“Marcus.””
Everyone froze.
Maya looked confused.
“Dad?””
Camille shook her head.
“Not Marcus.””
She pointed to the name.
“Someone using his identity.””
Mr. Cole leaned closer.
His expression changed.
“That’s impossible.””
Camille looked at him.
“Is it?””
The attorney read the page again.
Then whispered:
“No.””
Marcus grabbed the notebook.
“What does this mean?””
Camille looked at him.
“It means Elena discovered someone had been pretending to be you.””
Maya felt cold.
“Pretending?””
Camille nodded.
“Someone who knew your habits.””
“Someone who knew the family.””
“Yes.””
“Someone close.””
Camille looked at Vanessa.
Then at Marcus.
Then at Maya.
“Yes.””
The backyard fell silent.
A person had been inside their lives.
A person who knew everything.
The house.
The trust.
The documents.
The signatures.
Maya whispered:
“How long?””
Camille looked at the notebook.
“Years.””
Marcus stared.
“No.””
Camille’s expression softened.
“Your wife found out shortly before she died.””
Maya’s breath caught.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Camille looked at her.
“Because she was afraid the person would come after you.””
Marcus’s voice shook.
“Who was it?””
Camille closed the notebook.
“That’s why I came tonight.””
She reached into the back pocket of the notebook.
And pulled out a final page.
A handwritten note.
Elena’s handwriting.
Marcus took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped.
Maya watched him.
“What does it say?””
Marcus looked up.
His face was filled with disbelief.
Because the note contained one sentence.
One sentence Elena had written before she died.
*“The person you trust most is the person you should fear.””*
Marcus slowly turned toward the people standing around him.
And then Camille added:
“Your wife wasn’t talking about Vanessa.””
A pause.
“She was talking about someone else.””
Maya looked at her father.
May you like
Because suddenly, everyone had a reason to lie.
And someone in their family had been hiding in plain sight.
