Chapter 13: The Face Behind the Lie
The backyard had never felt so unfamiliar.
The same lights hung above them.
The same tables stood covered with untouched food.
The same mansion rose behind them.
But everything had changed.
A place that was supposed to represent family now felt like the center of a mystery.
Marcus held Elena’s final note in his hand.
His fingers shook.
Not from fear.
From realization.
“The person you trust most…”
He repeated the words quietly.
Maya watched him.
She didn’t know what hurt more.
The possibility that someone had betrayed their family.
Or the fact that her father already knew who it might be.
“Dad.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
“Who is it?””
He opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Camille watched him carefully.
“You know.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No.””
“You do.””
His silence answered for him.
Maya stepped back.
“You know.””
Marcus looked devastated.
“Maya, listen to me.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I need you to stop telling me to listen when you already knew something was wrong.””
Marcus lowered his head.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected who?””
Nobody moved.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Your brother.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Maya.
“Your uncle.””
The name that had haunted the night returned.
Maya shook her head.
“But he’s been gone.””
Camille slowly opened the notebook.
“Elena never believed he disappeared.””
She turned the pages.
“She wrote that he changed his name. Changed his location. But he never stopped watching.””
Marcus took the notebook.
“She knew?””
Camille nodded.
“She spent months gathering proof.””
Mr. Cole looked through the papers.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
The attorney pointed to a page.
“There are financial transfers here.””
Marcus leaned closer.
The records showed payments.
Small payments.
Hidden.
Repeated.
“To whom?””
Camille answered.
“To someone investigating the family.””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Who paid them?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Mr. Cole looked at Vanessa.
Her expression changed.
Marcus noticed.
“Vanessa.””
She looked away.
“You paid?””
Maya stared.
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then why do you look guilty?””
“Because I know what those payments were.””
The backyard went silent.
Maya looked at her.
“Explain.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“I paid someone to find out who was trying to access the estate.””
Marcus stared.
“You were investigating.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“You wouldn’t have believed me.””
“You threatened my daughter.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I know.””
The admission was painful.
“I thought if I scared Maya, she would tell me if someone had approached her.””
Maya looked away.
“You made me afraid of everyone.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I know.””
For the first time, she looked genuinely ashamed.
Camille watched her.
“You made mistakes.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“But you weren’t the person Elena feared.””
Marcus looked at Camille.
“Then who?””
Camille turned the notebook.
Another page.
Another name.
A name written by Elena.
Marcus stared.
His face changed.
“No.””
Maya looked.
“Who?””
Marcus couldn’t say it.
Camille did.
“Daniel Carter.””
Maya froze.
Her uncle.
Her father’s brother.
The man who used to bring her birthday gifts.
The man who used to call her “little princess.””
The man everyone said had moved away.
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“He wouldn’t.””
Camille’s expression softened.
“Your brother knew exactly how to make people believe that.””
Marcus looked angry.
“You don’t know him.””
“I knew him before you did.””
The sentence stunned him.
“What?””
Camille looked at Elena’s notebook.
“Daniel was not just your brother.””
Marcus stared.
“What are you saying?””
“He was involved with Elena’s business before you met her.””
Mr. Cole looked surprised.
“That’s impossible.””
Camille nodded.
“That’s why Elena hid it.””
Maya felt overwhelmed.
Her entire family history seemed to be changing every few minutes.
“Why would he do this?””
Camille looked at her.
“Because your mother discovered something.””
“What?””
“That Daniel wasn’t trying to take the house.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then what?””
Camille looked toward the mansion.
“He was trying to find what was hidden inside it.””
Everyone became still.
The house.
The thing that started everything.
Not the property.
Something inside.
Marcus looked at Maya.
“Your mother left something.””
Maya whispered:
“What?””
Camille closed the notebook.
“A truth.””
Before anyone could ask more, a loud sound came from inside the mansion.
A crash.
Everyone turned.
Marcus immediately moved.
“Maya, stay behind me.””
They rushed toward the glass doors.
Inside, the office lights were on.
The room where Marcus kept family documents.
The door was open.
And standing inside was someone they thought was gone.
Someone holding a file.
May you like
Someone who looked exactly like the person Elena warned them about.
Daniel Carter.
