Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Deed
Marcus stared at the document while the backyard remained frozen around him.
The party that had looked perfect ten minutes earlier now felt like a stage after the lights went out.
The laughter was gone.
The music suddenly sounded too loud.
Maya stood beside her father, confused and afraid. She understood that something important had happened, but she didn’t understand why Vanessa looked like she had just seen a ghost.
Marcus turned another page.
The legal language was clear.
The property had been placed into a trust years earlier.
A trust created by his late wife, Elena, before her illness took her life.
A trust created for Maya.
Marcus swallowed hard.
He remembered that conversation.
The hospital room.
Elena’s tired smile.
Her hand holding his.
Promise me she’ll always have something that is hers.
At the time, he thought Elena was talking about a home.
Now he realized she was talking about security.
A future.
A place where Maya could never be powerless.
Marcus slowly closed the folder.
“Vanessa.””
She looked away.
“Marcus, don’t do this in front of everyone.””
He stepped closer.
“You knew.””
Her eyes flickered.
“Knew what?””
“That this house belongs to Maya.””
Vanessa forced a laugh.
“I knew there were papers. That doesn’t mean anything.””
Mr. Cole adjusted his glasses.
“Actually, it means everything.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“No,” Mr. Cole replied calmly.
“I’m correcting one.””
Marcus held the folder against his chest.
“Maya told me you threatened her.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“She misunderstood.””
Maya finally spoke.
“No, I didn’t.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice was quiet, but stronger than before.
“You told me if I didn’t help with the party, you would make sure I never got Mom’s house.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“I was trying to teach you discipline.””
“You said I was lucky you let me live there.””
A few guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.
Marcus turned toward his wife.
“You said that?””
Vanessa looked around.
She realized something.
The people who had ignored Maya before were now watching her.
Judging her.
She lowered her voice.
“Marcus, we need to talk privately.””
“No.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Marcus looked at Maya.
“For years, my daughter has been standing alone in rooms where she should have been protected.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“Not tonight.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You’re choosing her over me?””
Marcus stared at her.
“She’s my child.””
The words landed harder than shouting.
Maya looked away, trying not to cry.
She had spent months wondering if her father would believe her.
Now she knew.
He did.
Mr. Cole opened the folder again.
“There is another issue.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What issue?””
The attorney hesitated.
Vanessa noticed.
And for the first time, panic appeared openly on her face.
“Mr. Cole.””
The attorney ignored her.
“Marcus, I need you to see the additional document.””
He removed another page.
Marcus read it.
His face changed.
“What is this?””
Mr. Cole answered carefully.
“A request to modify ownership.””
Maya looked confused.
“Modify?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You tried to change the property records?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Marcus looked at Mr. Cole.
“When was this submitted?””
The attorney looked down.
“Yesterday.””
Maya’s hand moved toward her mouth.
Yesterday.
The same day Vanessa started treating her differently.
The same day she warned Maya about losing the house.
Marcus’s anger grew.
“You knew you couldn’t take it.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
“No,” Marcus said.
“You were trying to control something that wasn’t yours.””
A few guests quietly began leaving.
Vanessa noticed and became desperate.
“You’re letting strangers embarrass me?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. Your choices did that.””
She stepped closer.
“You think you know everything?””
The question made Marcus pause.
Because Vanessa didn’t sound defeated.
She sounded like someone who still had a card to play.
Mr. Cole noticed it too.
“Vanessa, you should be careful about what you say next.””
She smiled faintly.
A cold, controlled smile.
“You all think I’m the villain because you don’t know the whole story.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Then tell us.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa looked directly at Maya.
And said something that made the teenager’s face lose all color.
“You should ask your father why your mother never told you the truth about that house.””
Maya froze.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa turned toward the mansion.
“The deed isn’t the only secret.””
Mr. Cole immediately stepped forward.
“Vanessa.””
But she kept going.
“Ask him what happened before Elena died.””
Marcus’s grip tightened around the folder.
Because there was one thing Vanessa didn’t know.
One thing he had never told anyone.
A conversation from years ago.
May you like
A promise he made in a hospital room.
And now he wondered if someone else knew about it.
