Chapter 11: The Trust Nobody Knew About
The next morning, Adrian sat in his father’s old office.
Not the mansion study.
A smaller room inside the property that he rarely entered.
A room filled with things Marcus Cole had left behind.
Books.
Old photographs.
Handwritten notes.
Things Adrian once considered meaningless.
Now they felt like evidence.
Nia stood near the doorway.
“You shouldn’t have come here.””
Adrian looked up.
“Why?””
“Because this room belongs to memories.””
He glanced around.
“And I’ve been ignoring them.””
Nia didn’t respond.
That was the answer.
Adrian opened an old wooden drawer.
Inside were documents.
Not business contracts.
Personal records.
He looked through them carefully.
Then stopped.
A small black notebook.
His father’s handwriting covered the first page.
Adrian opened it.
The first sentence made him freeze.
*The person closest to Adrian is not always the person loyal to him.*
He looked at Nia.
“This is about Elliot.””
“Maybe.””
“You knew about this notebook?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Nia looked at him.
“Because your father wanted you to find it yourself.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Even now, his father was forcing him to slow down.
To think.
To question.
He read more.
*Elliot has always been intelligent. But intelligence without responsibility becomes dangerous.*
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
His brother.
The person everyone underestimated.
The person Adrian protected.
The person he helped get jobs, opportunities, and money.
The person who always told him:
“Brother, I’m proud of you.””
A memory appeared.
Elliot sitting across from him years ago.
“You’re the reason this family has everything.””
Adrian had believed him.
Now he wondered if Elliot said that because he admired him.
Or because he wanted what Adrian had.
Nia sat down.
“There’s something else.””
Adrian looked up.
“What?””
“Your father wasn’t only investigating Elliot.””
“Who else?””
Nia looked toward the window.
“Adrian, your father believed Elliot had help.””
The answer came before the words.
“No.””
Nia said nothing.
Adrian stood.
“No.””
Because there was only one person left.
One person who benefited from Adrian losing control.
One person who was always nearby.
Vanessa.
“She was part of it.””
“I don’t know.””
“You know more than you’re saying.””
Nia looked at him.
“I know she met Elliot.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
Adrian walked away.
The frustration returned.
But this time, it wasn’t directed at Nia.
It was directed at himself.
He had spent years believing he was the person who saw through everyone.
Yet the people closest to him had been hiding things in plain sight.
His phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from his attorney.
*You need to come to the office immediately.*
Attached was a file.
Adrian opened it.
His expression changed.
Nia noticed.
“What happened?””
Adrian turned the screen.
The file contained financial records.
Transfers.
Large amounts.
Repeated payments.
The account belonged to Elliot.
But the money came from a company Adrian owned.
A company he had created years ago.
A company only three people had access to.
Adrian.
Elliot.
And Vanessa.
Nia whispered:
“Now you know.””
Adrian stared at the numbers.
“No.””
He looked confused.
“This doesn’t make sense.””
“What?””
“Elliot couldn’t move this money.””
“Why?””
“Because he didn’t have authorization.””
Nia studied him.
“Are you sure?””
Adrian looked at the records again.
Then his face changed.
Because he remembered.
Months earlier.
He had given Vanessa temporary access.
Just once.
For a business emergency.
He had forgotten.
But someone else hadn’t.
Nia saw the realization.
“Adrian?””
He slowly lowered the phone.
“She wasn’t just helping Elliot.””
A pause.
“She was using me.””
Before Nia could respond, Adrian’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A woman’s voice.
Not Vanessa.
Not Nia.
Someone older.
Someone familiar.
“Adrian Cole?””
“Yes.””
“I need you to listen carefully.””
“Who is this?””
The woman hesitated.
Then said:
“My name is Claire Bennett.””
Nia’s face changed.
Adrian noticed.
“You know that name?””
Nia whispered:
“Yes.””
The woman continued.
“I was your father’s private investigator.””
Adrian stood completely still.
“Why are you calling me?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because your father was right.””
Adrian’s grip tightened.
“About what?””
The woman lowered her voice.
“Vanessa and Elliot were only the beginning.””
The line went silent for a moment.

Then Claire said:
“There is someone else you never suspected.””
