Chapter 13: The Truth Marcus Left Behind
Adrian couldn’t move.
The room felt unfamiliar.
The walls.
The furniture.
The memories.
Everything he had known about himself suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.
“My real father…”
The words barely left his mouth.
Nia looked at him with pain in her eyes.
“I know this is a lot.””
“A lot?””
His voice cracked.
“My entire life is a lie.””
“No.””
Nia stepped closer.
“Your entire life is not a lie.””
Adrian laughed once.
A broken sound.
“How can you say that?””
“Because Marcus loved you.””
“He wasn’t my father.””
Nia shook her head.
“He was.””
Adrian looked away.
“Not by blood.””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“By choice.””
That answer should have comforted him.
Instead, it made everything hurt more.
Because Marcus Cole had been the only person Adrian ever tried to impress.
The only person whose approval mattered.
And now he was discovering there was a secret between them.
A secret everyone seemed to know except him.
Claire spoke through the phone.
“Adrian, you need to understand your father’s decision.””
“My father?””
She paused.
“Marcus.””
The correction hurt.
But Adrian didn’t fight it.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he was afraid you would think everything he gave you was conditional.””
Adrian looked down.
The mansion.
The company.
The name.
The life.
“What else did he hide?””
Nia reached into the small box.
She removed another envelope.
Different from the first.
Newer.
“My father gave me this after Marcus passed.””
Adrian stared.
“You had another letter?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was waiting for the right time.””
His expression hardened.
“You decided when I deserved the truth?””
Nia accepted the anger.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“I decided when you could survive it.””
The honesty stopped him.
Because she wasn’t defending herself.
She was telling him the truth.
Claire spoke again.
“Open the document.””
Adrian took the envelope.
His hands shook slightly.
He hated that.
He hated feeling uncertain.
But for the first time, he allowed himself to.
Inside was a legal document.
Not a letter.
A declaration.
His eyes moved across the page.
*Statement of Adoption and Family Protection Agreement.*
He froze.
“Adoption?””
Nia nodded.
“Marcus legally adopted you when you were a child.””
Adrian read faster.
The words blurred.
His mother’s name.
Marcus’s signature.
A child’s name.
His name.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“About my biological father?””
“Yes.””
“Who was he?””
Nia looked at the floor.
“His name was Richard Vale.””
Adrian frowned.
The name felt familiar.
Then it hit him.
“Vale?””
Claire answered.
“Yes.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Richard Vale.
The man whose company had once competed against Marcus Cole’s.
The man who disappeared from business years ago.
The man Adrian had heard stories about but never met.
“Why would my father hide that?””
Nia looked at him.
“Because Richard Vale wasn’t just a competitor.””
A pause.
“He was dangerous.””
Adrian stared.
“What does that have to do with Elliot?””
Nia didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
The connection formed in Adrian’s mind.
Elliot.
Vanessa.
The money.
The secrets.
Richard Vale.
“No.””
Claire spoke carefully.
“Adrian, your father believed Elliot discovered the truth.””
“And?””
“And he believed Elliot wanted something from it.””
“What?””
Nia looked at him.
“The company.””
Adrian stepped back.
“My company?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because if your adoption became public, Elliot believed he could challenge your position.””
Adrian shook his head.
“That’s insane.””
“No.””
Nia’s voice was quiet.
“That’s why your father created the trust.””
The pieces came together.
The mansion.
The amendment.
The protection.
Everything.
Marcus wasn’t trying to control Adrian.
He was trying to protect the family he chose.
Adrian sat down.
For the first time, he looked exhausted.
Not defeated.
Just human.
“I spent my whole life trying to become him.””
Nia watched him.
“And I spent years proving I was nothing like him.””
A tear formed in his eye.
He quickly wiped it away.
But Nia saw.
She didn’t comment.
She simply stood beside him.
After a moment, Adrian looked up.
“Where is Richard Vale now?””
Claire went silent.
Too silent.
Adrian noticed.
“Claire.””
“There’s something you should know.””
“What?””
“Richard Vale didn’t disappear.””
Adrian’s stomach tightened.
“Then where is he?””
Claire took a breath.
“He’s been closer to you than you realize.””
The phone went quiet.
Adrian looked at Nia.
And before anyone could say another word, the mansion lights flickered.
Then his phone received a message.
One sentence.

From an unknown number.
