Chapter 6: The Letter From The Past
The mansion fell silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that came before something broke.
Nia stood in the center of the study with the envelope in her hand.
Adrian stared at it like it was a threat.
Because it was.
Not a physical threat.
A truth he couldn’t control.
“You’re making this bigger than it needs to be,” Adrian said.
Nia looked at him.
“Am I?””
“Yes.””
“You don’t even know what’s inside.””
“I know enough.””
Nia smiled sadly.
“No, Adrian.””
She held the envelope tighter.
“You know enough to be afraid.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.””
Nia turned toward her.
“You should leave.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
“This is not your house.””
The words came out automatically.
And everyone noticed.
Even Vanessa.
Because a second later, she realized exactly what she had said.
Nia looked at Adrian.
“Interesting.””
Adrian’s face tightened.
“Vanessa.””
“What?””
“You need to calm down.””
She looked at him.
“I’m trying to help you.””
“No.””
The answer surprised both women.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“You’re trying to protect yourself.””
The room froze.
Vanessa stared.
“After everything I did for you?””
Adrian didn’t respond.
Because suddenly he wasn’t sure what “everything” meant.
Nia opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Old.
Folded carefully.
She looked at the handwriting.
And for a moment, the anger disappeared.
Her mother was gone.
But somehow, her voice was still there.
Nia began reading.
“My dear Nia…”
Adrian watched her.
“Nia, we don’t need to do this.””
She continued.
“My greatest fear was not that you would lose a house…”
Her eyes lifted.
“It was that you would lose yourself trying to keep one.””
Adrian’s expression shifted.
Because those words weren’t meant for him.
But they described him perfectly.
Nia kept reading.
“My daughter, never confuse someone’s confidence with their honesty.””
The room grew colder.
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
Adrian looked away.
“My husband once told me that powerful people don’t make mistakes. I learned that was not true. Powerful people simply convince others their mistakes are necessary.””
Nia folded the letter slightly.
Adrian stepped closer.
“What did your mother know?””
Nia looked at him.
“She knew you.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Her voice remained calm.
“That’s what you always believed. That nobody could see through you.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“What did she tell you?””
Nia looked at the final paragraph.
Then she stopped.
Adrian noticed.
“What?””
Nia folded the letter.
“Nothing.””
“That’s not nothing.””
She placed the letter back into the envelope.
“It’s something you’re not ready for.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
Nia looked around the study.
At the desk.
At the papers.
At the man who once promised to protect her.
“Actually, Adrian…”
She walked toward him.
“I think I’ve been deciding that for a very long time.””
She placed the envelope beside the folder.
Then she pointed at the documents.
“You wanted me gone.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You wanted to erase twelve years of my life with a signature.””
Silence.
“So now you’re going to read every page.””
She turned toward the door.
“Every document.””
She paused.
“Every name.””
Adrian stared.
“What names?””
Nia looked back.
The smallest hint of emotion appeared on her face.
“Ask yourself why your lawyer never told you who approved the amendment.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you saying?””
Nia opened the door.
“I’m saying you’ve been looking at the wrong person.””
She stepped outside.
Adrian rushed to the desk and grabbed the papers again.
Vanessa watched him.
“What are you searching for?””
He didn’t answer.
Because hidden in the corner of the final page was a line he had ignored before.
A name.
A name that connected the house, the amendment, and the secret Nia had protected for years.
Adrian stared.
And whispered:
“That’s impossible…”
May you like
Because the person who helped Nia take control of the mansion…
was someone Adrian trusted completely.
