Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal
Adrian stared at the message.
The words burned into the screen.
Ask your wife what she promised my father.
Slowly, he lowered the phone.
Nia saw his expression.
“What did it say?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
She already knew.
“Adrian.””
“Did you know?””
Her face changed.
“Know what?””
“About Richard Vale.””
Silence.
The silence was louder than an argument.
Adrian stood.
“You knew who he was.””
Nia looked away.
“Yes.””
His heart sank.
“How much?””
“Enough.””
The answer made him angry.
“Enough?””
He laughed.
“You all keep saying that.””
Nia remained calm.
Because she knew this moment would come.
“I knew Richard Vale was alive.””
Adrian stared.
“And you never told me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because your father asked me not to.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Again with my father.””
His voice grew louder.
“Everyone uses my father’s name like it excuses everything.””
Nia flinched.
But she didn’t step away.
“Marcus wasn’t hiding things from you to hurt you.””
“Then why does it feel like everyone protected me by lying?””
That question stopped her.
Because there was no easy answer.
Sometimes protection and control looked dangerously similar.
“I’m sorry.””
Adrian looked at her.
The apology surprised him.
“I should have told you sooner.””
“Why didn’t you?””
Nia looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
Adrian softened slightly.
“Of what?””
“Of losing you completely.””
The answer hung between them.
Not romantic.
Not dramatic.
Just honest.
Nia continued.
“Your father knew the truth about Richard. He also knew Richard had been searching for you.””
“Why?””
“Because you were his son.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“And Marcus?””
“He raised you because Richard disappeared.””
“Why?””
Nia hesitated.
“Because Richard made choices that put people in danger.””
Adrian looked at the phone.
The message.
The warning.
The threats.
Everything.
“Richard sent this?””
“Yes.””
“You’re sure?””
Nia nodded.
“His style.””
Adrian frowned.
“You know him?””
“I met him once.””
That surprised him.
“When?””
“Before I met you.””
Another secret.
Another piece of a life he never knew.
Adrian looked at her.
“You knew my family before you married me.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Nia took a breath.
“Your mother.””
“My mother?””
“She was my mentor.””
Adrian stared.
The world kept expanding.
Every answer opened another question.
“You were connected to my family before me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you marry me?””
Nia looked at him.
“Because I loved you.””
Simple.
Painful.
Real.
Before Adrian could respond, the front door opened.
Both of them turned.
Vanessa entered.
But she wasn’t smiling.
She looked nervous.
“Adrian.””
His expression immediately hardened.
“What are you doing here?””
“I need to talk to you.””
“No.””
She looked at Nia.
“Alone.””
Adrian laughed.
“After everything?””
“Please.””
The desperation in her voice surprised him.
Nia stepped back.
“I’ll give you a moment.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You don’t have to.””
“I do.””
She walked toward the door.
Vanessa watched her leave.
Then turned back.
“You think I betrayed you.””
Adrian said nothing.
“Fine.””
She looked down.
“I did things I shouldn’t have.””
That admission surprised him.
“What things?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Elliot contacted me first.””
“Why?””
“He said he could help me.””
“With what?””
She looked at him.
“With becoming the person you would choose.””
Adrian stared.
The honesty was almost worse than a lie.
“You manipulated me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I knew you were unhappy.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
“No.””
She nodded.
“It isn’t.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked different.
Not innocent.
Not forgiven.
Just broken.
“But Elliot wasn’t honest with me either.””
Adrian narrowed his eyes.
“What do you mean?””
“He never wanted the mansion.””
“Then what did he want?””
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“He wanted access.””
“To what?””
She hesitated.
“Something your father left behind.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Your birth records.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
“Because Elliot believed Richard Vale left something for you.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
She stepped closer.
“Adrian, I swear, I never knew the whole plan.””
“And now you’re helping me?””
“No.””
She looked away.
“I’m helping myself.””
The honesty was unexpected.
Then she reached into her purse.
She placed a small device on the desk.
“A recording.””
Adrian looked at it.
“Of what?””
Vanessa whispered:
“The conversation between Elliot and Richard.””
Adrian stared.
“Richard is here?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He came back two days ago.””
Adrian felt the air leave his lungs.
“Where?””
Vanessa looked toward the mansion entrance.
“He’s already inside.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Confident.
A man appeared in the doorway.
Older.
Calm.
Watching.
Adrian knew instantly.
Because some faces carried history.
Richard Vale looked directly at him.
May you like
And said:
“Hello, son.””
