Chapter 12: The Final Piece Of The Puzzle
Adrian didn’t speak.
He couldn’t.
The words stayed in the air.
Someone else.
Someone he never suspected.
The sentence was impossible.
Because Adrian had already reached the limit of what he could believe.
First Vanessa.
Then Elliot.
Now someone else?
His entire life felt like a room full of locked doors.
And every door he opened revealed another one behind it.
“Who?”” Adrian asked.
Claire Bennett didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
“Mr. Cole, before I tell you, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your father wasn’t investigating a betrayal.””
Adrian frowned.
“Then what was he investigating?””
“The destruction of your family.””
Nia closed her eyes.
She already knew.
Adrian looked at her.
“You knew.””
Nia looked back.
“I knew your father was afraid.””
“Afraid of who?””
Claire interrupted.
“Adrian, do not confront anyone until you have proof.””
He ignored the warning.
“I need a name.””
“You need patience.””
“I’ve had enough patience.””
The anger in his voice surprised even him.
But it wasn’t the anger of a powerful man.
It was the anger of someone realizing how much he had lost.
Claire sighed.
“Your father kept records because he believed the person responsible would eventually reveal themselves.””
“When?””
“When they thought they had won.””
Adrian looked around the room.
The mansion.
The papers.
The divorce.
Everything.
A horrible thought entered his mind.
“What if this was all planned?””
Nia’s expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
“What if the divorce wasn’t the goal?””
Silence.
Claire spoke quietly.
“Now you’re thinking.””
Adrian looked at Nia.
“What if someone wanted me to remove you?””
Nia didn’t answer.
Because she had considered the same thing.
“What happens when I sign those papers?”” Adrian asked.
Claire replied:
“You lose access to certain protections your father created.””
Adrian froze.
“So Vanessa and Elliot wanted me to divorce Nia?””
“Possibly.””
“Why?””
Another pause.
Then Claire said:
“Because your father trusted Nia with something.””
Adrian looked at his wife.
“What?””
Claire’s voice became quieter.
“Ownership was only the first layer.””
The room went silent.
Nia looked away.
Adrian noticed.
“You know.””
She didn’t deny it.
“What else?””
Nia walked toward the window.
“Your father wanted me to keep something safe.””
“What?””
She looked at him.
“A truth about your family.””
Adrian stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I promised him.””
“You promised my father before your husband?””
Nia’s face tightened.
“No.””
Her voice became emotional for the first time.
“I promised him because he knew the truth would destroy you if you learned it the wrong way.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“What truth?””
Nia looked at the old notebook.
Then at the letter.
Then at Adrian.
“Your father wasn’t your biological father.””
The world stopped.
Adrian didn’t move.
He didn’t blink.
He simply stared.
The words didn’t make sense.
“What?””
Nia’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Claire remained silent on the phone.
Because she knew this was the moment everything changed.
“My father…”
Adrian struggled to speak.
“My father raised me.””
“Yes.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Nia whispered:
“I’m saying Marcus Cole loved you enough to choose you.””
Adrian looked lost.
“Who was my real father?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence hurt more than any lie.
Then Claire spoke.
“Adrian…”
“Yes?””
“Your father left one final document.””
Adrian looked at the desk.
“Where?””
“With Nia.””
His eyes moved to his wife.
Again.
Always Nia.
Always the person holding the truth he wasn’t ready to face.
Claire continued:
“And before you ask why…”
May you like
A pause.
“Your real father is the reason Marcus Cole never trusted Elliot.””
