Chapter 4: The Signature He Ignored
“Mr. Cole, the other signature belongs to a witness approved by the county office.””
The attorney’s voice came through the phone.
But Adrian barely heard the explanation.
His mind had already moved somewhere else.
A place where every conversation with Nia had a second meaning.
A place where every quiet moment wasn’t surrender.
It was preparation.
“Who was the witness?”” Adrian asked.
The attorney hesitated.
“Mr. Cole, I don’t think that information changes the validity of the amendment.””
Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.
“I didn’t ask what you think. I asked who signed it.””
Vanessa watched him carefully.
She had never seen him like this.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Searching.
Finally, the attorney answered.
“Her mother’s estate representative.””
Adrian froze.
“My mother-in-law?””
“Yes.””
The words settled heavily.
Vanessa frowned.
“What does her mother have to do with this?””
Adrian ended the call without answering.
He stared at the page again.
The document wasn’t just a legal form.
It was a doorway into something he had never bothered to understand.
Nia’s family.
Her history.
The things she never talked about.
Because Adrian had never asked.
He had always assumed silence meant there was nothing there.
“Adrian.””
Vanessa’s voice pulled him back.
“What is happening?””
He placed the phone on the desk.
“I don’t know.””
She looked frustrated.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No. You don’t say that.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“You always know.””
The statement bothered him because it was accurate.
Adrian Cole had built his entire identity around being the smartest person in every room.
He knew markets.
He knew contracts.
He knew people.
Or at least, he thought he did.
But he never knew Nia.
Not really.
Vanessa walked toward the desk and picked up the folder.
“So this amendment was created before the divorce?””
“Yes.””
“Meaning she planned this?””
Adrian looked toward the doorway.
“No.””
Vanessa raised an eyebrow.
“No?””
“She didn’t plan this.””
“Then what did she do?””
Adrian looked back at the page.
“She protected herself.””
Vanessa laughed.
“From you?””
The question irritated him.
But he didn’t answer.
Because deep down, he knew.
For years, he had made decisions without asking Nia.
He had moved money.
Changed investments.
Signed agreements.
He told himself he was protecting their future.
But maybe he had simply stopped seeing her as an equal.
Vanessa flipped through the folder.
“She must have known you would do this.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Do what?””
“Leave.””
The word was simple.
But it hit harder than expected.
Because Nia had not looked surprised.
Not once.
She had stood there like she had already accepted the man he had become.
Adrian walked to the window.
The bright afternoon light filled the study.
The mansion looked exactly the same.
The expensive furniture.
The artwork.
The perfectly arranged room.
But suddenly, none of it felt like his.
“When did she change?”” he whispered.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“What?””
“Nia.””
He looked down.
“When did she stop needing me?””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“She doesn’t own this place.””
Adrian looked at her.
“That’s not what I asked.””
A brief silence passed.
Then Vanessa stepped closer.
“You’re letting her get inside your head.””
Adrian said nothing.
“She’s doing this because she wants control.””
“No.””
Vanessa stopped.
He rarely defended Nia.
Not anymore.
“No?”” she repeated.
Adrian touched the page.
“She’s doing this because she already had control.””
The sentence made Vanessa uncomfortable.
Before she could respond, Adrian’s phone rang.
A message appeared.
From his attorney.
*NEW DOCUMENTS UPLOADED. REVIEW IMMEDIATELY.*
Adrian opened the attachment.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then stopped.
Another file.
A scanned agreement.
A date.
A signature.
His breathing changed.
Vanessa noticed.
“What now?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
“What?””
He slowly turned the phone toward her.
She looked.
And her face changed.
Because beneath the amendment was another document.
One that explained why Nia had never been afraid of losing the house.
Vanessa whispered:
“She didn’t just protect herself…”
She looked at Adrian.
“She knew you would try to take everything.””
Adrian stared at the screen.
Then he saw the final line.
A note from the attorney.
*Client requested this remain confidential until legally necessary.*
Client.
Not wife.
Not spouse.
Client.
Nia had been preparing for a world where Adrian was no longer on her side.
And suddenly, Adrian realized something worse.
May you like
She hadn’t been planning to fight him.
She had been planning to survive him.
