The House That Was Never His / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Name On The Signature

Adrian stared at the page.

For several seconds, he forgot how to breathe.

The study around him disappeared.

The fireplace.

The desk.

The expensive furniture.

None of it mattered.

Because the name written beneath the amendment wasn’t supposed to exist.

Not there.

Not on that document.

Not connected to Nia.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

She looked over his shoulder.

“Who signed it?””

His eyes remained locked on the paper.

A name.

A signature.

A person he had trusted for years.

A person who had sat at his dinner table.

A person who had congratulated him when he bought the mansion.

A person who had told him he was making the best decisions for his family.

Vanessa grabbed the document.

“Adrian.””

He finally looked at her.

“Your father?””

The word came out quietly.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Your father signed this?””

Adrian took the paper back.

“No.””

His voice was low.

“That’s impossible.””

“But it’s his name.””

Adrian looked again.

The signature was unmistakable.

His father’s.

Marcus Cole.

The man who had built the foundation of Adrian’s success.

The man who taught him one lesson above all:

Never lose control.

Adrian stepped away from the desk.

“No.””

Vanessa watched him.

“You knew he was involved?””

“I didn’t.””

“Then why does his signature matter?””

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Because admitting the truth meant admitting something worse.

His father had known.

His father had prepared for this.

And somehow, Nia had been part of that plan.

“When did your father die?”” Vanessa asked.

Adrian looked at her sharply.

“Three years ago.””

“And this amendment?””

He looked at the date.

The same.

Three years ago.

A cold feeling moved through him.

Vanessa noticed.

“What?””

Adrian slowly sat down.

“My father signed this before he died.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That makes no sense.””

“No.””

Adrian looked at the paper.

“It doesn’t.””

He remembered that year.

The arguments.

The hospital visits.

The business meetings.

The conversations he avoided because he thought his father was becoming weak.

Marcus Cole had spent his final months trying to tell him something.

And Adrian hadn’t listened.

“Did Nia know your father?”” Vanessa asked.

Adrian looked up.

“What?””

“Did she?””

He hesitated.

Then he remembered.

Small moments.

His father and Nia talking alone at family dinners.

His father defending Nia during arguments.

His father telling Adrian, “You don’t understand the woman you married.””

At the time, Adrian thought it was criticism.

Now it felt like a warning.

“Yes,” Adrian said.

“She knew him.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“How well?””

Adrian looked toward the doorway.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered him.

Because there was a time when he would have said he knew everything about Nia.

Her favorite food.

Her habits.

Her fears.

Her dreams.

But now he was discovering entire chapters of her life that existed without him.

His phone rang.

The screen showed his attorney.

Adrian answered immediately.

“Tell me everything.””

The attorney sighed.

“Mr. Cole, I was hoping you would review the full file before we discussed this.””

“I don’t have time.””

A pause.

“Your father created a separate legal trust before his death.””

Adrian stood.

“A trust?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Another pause.

“The property.””

Adrian’s face tightened.

“The mansion?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What did he say?””

Adrian ignored her.

“Why?””

The attorney lowered his voice.

“Because your father believed you were making a mistake.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

A strange anger rose in his chest.

Not because his father disagreed.

Because he had never been told.

“My father hid this from me?””

“No.””

The attorney corrected him.

“Your father instructed me not to disclose it unless certain conditions were met.””

“What conditions?””

Silence.

“Mr. Cole…”

“What conditions?””

The attorney finally answered.

“If you attempted to remove Nia from the property.””

Adrian went completely still.

The words cut deeper than expected.

His father had anticipated this.

Not the divorce.

Not Vanessa.

This exact moment.

The moment Adrian would try to take everything.

“Why would he do that?””

The attorney replied carefully.

“Because he believed you inherited his ambition…”

A pause.

“But not his patience.””

Adrian looked at the papers.

The mansion.

The life he thought he controlled.

Suddenly it all felt like a test he had failed.

Vanessa whispered:

“Adrian…”

He didn’t hear her.

Because one question was burning in his mind.

If his father protected Nia…

What else had Marcus Cole known?
