The House That Was Never His / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2: The Page He Never Read

Adrian hated surprises.

Especially when they came from someone he believed he had already defeated.

He grabbed the folder from the desk and flipped through the pages quickly.

The confident rhythm he had carried into the room was gone.

Now every movement was faster.

More desperate.

Vanessa noticed immediately.

“What are you looking for?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

He scanned the documents again.

Divorce terms.

Financial separation.

Asset information.

Everything appeared normal.

Exactly what he expected.

He looked up toward the doorway.

Nia was still there.

Calm.

Silent.

Watching.

That bothered him more than anything.

“Nia,” Adrian said sharply, “what did you do?””

She didn’t move.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Then why did you tell me to check the last page?””

“Because you should have read it before asking me to sign.””

Vanessa walked beside Adrian.

“Don’t let her intimidate you.””

Nia looked at Vanessa.

“I’m not intimidating anyone.””

Vanessa smiled.

“You always had this quiet act.””

“Quiet?””

“Yes. Like you’re above everyone.””

Nia looked around the study.

At the fireplace.

The photographs on the shelves.

The desk where Adrian had spent years making decisions.

“No,” Nia said softly.

“I was quiet because I was listening.””

Adrian stopped flipping pages.

“What does that mean?””

Nia didn’t answer.

That made him angrier.

“Nia, stop playing games.””

A small sadness crossed her face.

“Games?””

She looked at the folder in his hands.

“Adrian, you walked into this room with a plan. You had a lawyer prepare everything. You brought Vanessa here. You expected me to cry, sign, and disappear.””

She took a breath.

“But now you’re angry because one page wasn’t written for you.””

The sentence hit harder than she intended.

Because Adrian knew there was truth in it.

He had always been the person who knew the details.

The numbers.

The contracts.

The decisions.

He never imagined someone else could hold information he didn’t.

He turned the pages faster.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“What exactly are you worried about?””

Adrian ignored her.

Nia watched them.

The man she married.

The woman who thought she had won.

Both of them standing over papers they assumed belonged to them.

“You know what’s funny?”” Nia said.

Adrian looked up.

“What?””

“For years, you told everyone this house was your greatest achievement.””

“It is.””

“No.””

Nia shook her head.

“It’s your greatest assumption.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“You’re being dramatic.””

Nia smiled faintly.

“Maybe.””

Then she looked at Adrian.

“But I learned from the best.””

Adrian finally reached the final pages.

His fingers slowed.

There it was.

A section he had never noticed.

A heading buried beneath the documents he believed were routine.

His face changed.

Not completely.

Just enough.

The arrogance disappeared first.

Then confusion.

Then something close to fear.

Vanessa saw it.

“Adrian?””

He didn’t respond.

She grabbed his arm.

“What is it?””

Adrian pulled the page closer.

His eyes moved across the text.

“No.””

The word escaped quietly.

Nia watched from the doorway.

She had seen Adrian angry.

She had seen him frustrated.

She had seen him embarrassed.

But she had never seen him afraid.

“What does it say?”” Vanessa demanded.

Adrian swallowed.

“Nia…”

For the first time, he said her name like he needed something from her.

Not like he owned her.

She didn’t answer.

Vanessa snatched the page from his hand.

“Give me that.””

She read.

Her confident expression slowly disappeared.

“What is this?””

Adrian stared at the document.

“I didn’t know.””

Nia raised an eyebrow.

“That’s the problem.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew?””

A long silence followed.

Nia’s fingers tightened around her purse strap.

She could have answered.

She could have explained.

But after years of being ignored, she allowed herself one moment.

One moment where they felt the uncertainty she had lived with.

“No,” she said.

“I trusted you to know your own paperwork.””

Vanessa looked back at the page.

“Adrian, what does this mean?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed locked on the document.

Because hidden among the legal language was a sentence he never expected to see.

A sentence that changed everything.

Nia stepped closer to the doorway.

“I’ll give you both some time to understand.””

Adrian looked up.

“Where are you going?””

She met his eyes.

“Somewhere you can’t follow.””

Then she walked out.

Behind her, Adrian stared at the page.

And Vanessa whispered the one question neither of them wanted answered.

“If he doesn’t own it…”

May you like

She looked at Adrian.

“Then who does?””
