Chapter 10: The Court Order That Stole My Daughter
For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was looking at.
The document on Helen's laptop was an official court order.
It carried a case number, a judge's signature, and a date six weeks earlier.
According to the document, Vanessa had been appointed Lily's temporary legal guardian.
I had supposedly consented.
I had supposedly signed the paperwork.
And I had supposedly agreed that Lily could be transferred into Vanessa's exclusive care.
None of it was true.
"How is this possible?"" I asked.
Helen removed her glasses.
"Someone submitted forged documents to the court.""
"But how could a judge approve this without speaking to me?""
"The application claimed there was an emergency involving the child's biological father and that you were unavailable.""
I stared at the screen.
"My father?""
Helen nodded.
"Daniel apparently represented himself as a concerned relative who had been providing financial support.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Financial support? He paid my wife to starve my daughter.""
Helen didn't disagree.
She printed the order and examined the signature.
"This is serious. If the documents were forged, the order can be challenged. But until the court formally reviews it, we must be careful about how we handle the situation.""
I looked toward Lily.
She was sitting beside Rachel, drawing a picture of a house.
I couldn't bear the thought of someone showing up and taking her away.
"Can they legally remove her from me today?""
Helen took a breath.
"If the order is still active, someone could attempt to enforce it. That's why we need immediate legal protection.""
She picked up her phone.
"I am contacting the court clerk and requesting an emergency hearing.""
While she made the call, Claire opened her handbag.
"I have something that may help.""
She placed a small envelope on the desk.
Inside was a handwritten statement signed by my grandmother.
It was dated four months before her death.
I read it.
*I, Eleanor Hale, am concerned that Daniel Hale has attempted to obtain unauthorized control over the inheritance intended for my great-granddaughter. I have instructed my attorney to ensure that no person may transfer custody or guardianship without independent judicial review.*
Below that was another paragraph.
*I specifically reject any arrangement that would allow Daniel Hale or anyone acting on his behalf to remove Lily from her father's care.*
I looked at Helen.
"Why wasn't this included in the court application?""
"Because the application was submitted without our office being notified. Your grandmother's original instructions were deliberately concealed.""
I felt my hands tighten.
"Who submitted it?""
Helen checked the filing details.
"An attorney named Gregory Shaw.""
Claire immediately reacted.
"Gregory?""
"You know him?"" I asked.
She nodded slowly.
"He used to work for Daniel.""
Helen looked up.
"That changes things.""
She explained that Gregory had previously represented several companies connected to my father's business. If he had knowingly submitted forged evidence, he could face serious professional and criminal consequences.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"Did you know about the court order?""
She was crying.
"Marcus, please listen.""
"Did you know?""
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
"How long?""
"Six weeks.""
I gripped the phone.
"You allowed me to believe I was her only legal guardian while you secretly obtained custody?""
"I didn't know what Daniel was planning!""
"You signed the paperwork.""
"He told me it was temporary.""
"You signed my name.""
There was a long silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"Yes.""
I looked at Helen.
She was writing everything down.
"Why?""
Vanessa began crying harder.
"Because Daniel said the trust would be safer if I had legal authority over Lily. He said it would only be for a few months.""
"And you believed him?""
"He showed me documents. He said everything was approved by your grandmother before she died.""
"Grandmother was dead!""
"I know!""
Her voice cracked.
"I know, Marcus. I know how terrible this sounds.""
I lowered my voice.
"Where is Noah?""
"At my mother's house.""
"Is he safe?""
"Yes.""
"Keep him there. Don't let Daniel or Ethan near him.""
She hesitated.
"Marcus, Daniel has someone watching your house.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"I saw a black SUV outside your driveway yesterday. Ethan said he was keeping an eye on things.""
I looked toward Helen.
"Can you describe the vehicle?""
Vanessa did.
Then she added something else.
"Daniel said Lily would be taken tonight.""
I stood up.
"Tonight?""
"Yes. He said the court order gave him enough authority to collect her if you refused to cooperate.""
Helen immediately instructed me not to confront anyone and contacted the police.
I ended the call.
Rachel was holding Lily now.
"What's happening?"" she asked.
I looked at my daughter.
"Nothing is going to happen to her.""
But I wasn't certain.
An hour later, Helen received a call from the courthouse.
The emergency hearing had been scheduled for the following morning.
The judge wanted the original documents, the security footage, and any evidence supporting our allegation of fraud.
It was the first real opportunity to challenge the order.
Then the front desk called Helen.
A man was downstairs asking to see her.
His name was Gregory Shaw.
The attorney who had filed the guardianship application.
Helen told him to wait.
Five minutes later, he entered her office.
He was in his late forties, wearing an expensive charcoal suit and carrying a leather briefcase.
He looked at me.
"Mr. Hale.""
I didn't respond.
He placed a business card on the desk.
"My client, Daniel Hale, would like to resolve this situation privately.""
I almost laughed.
"Your client can explain himself to the police.""
Gregory ignored the comment.
"Mr. Hale, you're understandably emotional. But the court has already recognized Vanessa's guardianship.""
"Through forged documents.""
"That's an allegation.""
I pushed the paperwork toward him.
"That's my signature?""
He examined it.
"I don't handle handwriting analysis.""
"Then perhaps you should explain why your application claims I voluntarily surrendered my daughter.""
Gregory closed his briefcase.
"My client is prepared to offer a substantial settlement.""
Helen stood.
"This meeting is over.""
Gregory turned toward me.
"Two million dollars.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"Two million dollars in exchange for your agreement to withdraw the custody challenge and permit Lily to reside with her grandfather.""
I felt my face grow hot.
"You think I'm going to sell my daughter?""
Gregory remained expressionless.
"I'm presenting an offer.""
I stepped closer.
"Tell Daniel something for me.""
"What?""
"He can keep every dollar he stole. He can keep every property, every company, every penny. But he will never own my daughter.""
Gregory picked up his briefcase.
"Then I suggest you prepare for tomorrow's hearing.""
He walked toward the door.
Before leaving, he turned around.
"One more thing, Mr. Hale. My client says you should ask your mother what happened the night Eleanor died.""
Then he left.
I looked at Helen.
"What happened the night my grandmother died?""
Helen's expression changed.
She slowly opened the blue folder.
"Your grandmother was supposed to meet Claire that evening.""
Claire nodded.
"But she never arrived.""
Helen turned another page.
"The official report says she died of natural causes.""
I swallowed.
"And you're saying?""
Helen looked toward Claire.
Claire's hands were trembling.
May you like
"Your grandmother didn't die peacefully in her sleep," she whispered.
"She was poisoned.""
