Chapter 12: The Recording That Changed Everything

I drove straight to my mother's house.

Helen insisted that law enforcement accompany us, and Claire came along.

Rachel stayed with Lily.

I had one question repeating in my head.

How could Vanessa have been involved in my grandmother's death?

When we arrived, my mother was waiting at the front door.

She looked exhausted.

"Marcus.""

I walked past her.

"Show me the records.""

She led us to my father's old office.

It was a small room at the back of the house. The desk hadn't been touched in years. Dust covered the bookshelves, and an old family photograph hung above the filing cabinet.

My father stood in the center of it.

Smiling.

His arm was around my mother.

I looked away.

"Where are they?""

My mother opened a locked drawer and removed a thick black folder.

"Your grandmother gave these to me three days before she died.""

I opened it.

Inside were bank statements, company registrations, medical invoices, and several photographs.

One photograph showed Vanessa standing outside a hospital.

Beside her was Dr. Samuel Price.

I stared at it.

"When was this taken?""

My mother checked the back.

"Three years ago. Two days before Eleanor died.""

Helen took the photograph.

"Do you know why she was there?""

My mother nodded.

"Vanessa said she was visiting someone.""

"Who?""

"Your grandmother.""

I felt sick.

"She visited Grandma?""

"Yes.""

I turned toward her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

My mother lowered her eyes.

"Because I didn't know what she had done.""

I opened the folder again.

There was a bank transfer showing that Vanessa had received $15,000 from a company connected to my father's business.

The date was the day before my grandmother died.

I stared at the amount.

"Was this the first payment?""

"No," my mother whispered.

"How many?""

"At least four.""

Helen immediately photographed the records.

"This is important evidence.""

I looked at my mother.

"Why did Grandma trust Vanessa?""

My mother shook her head.

"She didn't know everything. She suspected Daniel was using her, but she believed Vanessa might help expose him.""

I turned another page.

There was a handwritten note.

*V has agreed to meet me privately. She says Daniel has been making threats. I believe she wants to leave, but she is afraid of what he knows about her past.*

I frowned.

"What past?""

My mother looked toward the window.

"Vanessa had a daughter before Noah.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"She was very young. The child was placed with relatives after Vanessa's first relationship ended.""

I tried to process that.

"Where is the girl now?""

My mother hesitated.

"I don't know.""

I turned toward Helen.

"Does that have anything to do with this?""

Helen examined the note.

"Possibly. We shouldn't assume anything until we know more.""

Then my mother reached into the folder and removed a small USB drive.

"Your grandmother left this.""

I stared at it.

"What's on it?""

"A recording.""

Helen connected it to her laptop.

The screen displayed several audio files.

One was labeled:

*ELEANOR — FINAL MEETING.*

Helen clicked it.

My grandmother's voice came through the speakers.

"Vanessa, I know Daniel has been paying you.""

A chair moved.

Then Vanessa's voice answered.

"I don't want to be involved anymore.""

My blood ran cold.

My grandmother continued.

"Then help me. Tell me what he is planning.""

Vanessa hesitated.

"He's trying to get Lily's trust.""

"Why?""

"He says the money belongs to him.""

My grandmother's voice became firm.

"It does not.""

Vanessa began crying.

"He's dangerous. You don't understand.""

"I understand perfectly.""

There was a long silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

"He said he would hurt Marcus if I didn't cooperate.""

My hands clenched.

My grandmother answered:

"Then we go to the police.""

Vanessa immediately panicked.

"No! You can't.""

"Why?""

"Because I already helped him.""

The recording continued.

Vanessa explained that she had helped Daniel create fake financial documents and had arranged meetings with people who could assist him in obtaining control of the trust.

Then my grandmother asked the question that made my stomach turn.

"What did you do at the hospital yesterday?""

Silence.

Vanessa finally answered.

"I only delivered the medication.""

My mother gasped.

I stared at the laptop.

My grandmother continued.

"What medication?""

"Something Dr. Price asked me to bring.""

"Did you know what it was?""

"No.""

"Did you see the label?""

Vanessa began crying.

"I didn't know it would hurt her.""

My grandmother's voice became quieter.

"Vanessa, what did you give me?""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I looked at the screen.

"Play it again.""

Helen did.

The same conversation.

The same words.

The same horrifying implication.

Vanessa had delivered something to my grandmother shortly before she died.

But the recording didn't prove she knew it was poison.

I turned toward my mother.

"Did Grandma die after that?""

My mother nodded.

"That evening.""

I felt dizzy.

Helen closed the laptop.

"This recording needs to go directly to investigators. We cannot draw conclusions about what the substance was until the medical evidence is reviewed.""

I looked at the USB drive.

"Can we prove what she delivered?""

My mother reached for another document.

"Your grandmother wrote down the name.""

She placed a small note on the desk.

It contained the name of a prescription medication and a handwritten dosage.

Helen photographed it.

Then Claire, who had been standing quietly near the filing cabinet, suddenly spoke.

"That's not what she was given.""

We all turned.

"What?""

Claire looked at the note.

"Your grandmother told me the medication made her feel dizzy. She said the bottle tasted different.""

I stared at her.

"Did you see the bottle?""

Claire nodded.

"I kept it.""

She opened her handbag and removed a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside was an old prescription bottle.

The label had faded, but the pharmacy name was still visible.

Helen examined it carefully.

"Where did you get this?""

"From Eleanor's bedside table. I took it the morning after she died because I didn't trust Daniel.""

I looked at Claire.

"You kept this for three years?""

She nodded.

"Your grandmother asked me to.""

Helen immediately contacted investigators and arranged for the bottle to be examined.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Rachel.

*Marcus, please call me immediately.*

I called.

She answered in a panic.

"Marcus, there are two men outside the house.""

My heart stopped.

"What men?""

"One is standing by the driveway. The other is trying to get through the side gate.""

"Where's Lily?""

"Upstairs with me.""

"Lock the bedroom door. Call the police.""

Rachel started crying.

"Marcus, one of them just shouted that they have a court order.""

I looked at Helen.

She immediately picked up her phone.

"Tell Rachel not to open the door. I'm contacting the officers.""

Then I heard Lily's small voice through the phone.

"Auntie Rachel?""

Rachel answered.

"It's okay, sweetheart.""

Lily whispered something.

Rachel went silent.

"What did she say?"" I asked.

Rachel's voice trembled.

"She says she knows the man outside.""

My blood ran cold.

"Who?""

Rachel took a breath.

"She says he's the man who took her to Grandpa's house.""

I heard a loud bang.

Then another.

Rachel screamed.

The phone fell.

I shouted her name.

"Rachel!""

No answer.

"Rachel!""

Then, through the speaker, I heard a man's voice.

"Where is the little girl?""

And another voice answered.

"Upstairs.""

The call disconnected.

I was already running toward the door when Helen shouted behind me.

"Marcus, wait for the police!""

But I couldn't wait.

Not after everything.

Not after the laundry room.

Not after the photographs.

Not after learning that my father had been planning this for months.

I reached the car and called Rachel again.

No answer.

Then another message appeared.

It was a photograph.

Lily was standing in the upstairs hallway, holding her stuffed rabbit.

A man's hand was visible around her shoulder.

Beneath the photograph was a message from an unknown number.

*Daniel says thank you for bringing his granddaughter home.*

I looked at the screen.

Then I noticed something in the background.

The front door was wide open.

And Rachel was nowhere in the photograph.

I called the police again.

This time, the dispatcher answered before the first ring finished.

"Emergency services. What's your emergency?""

"My four-year-old daughter has been taken.""

May you like

I swallowed hard.

"And I know exactly who took her.""
