Chapter 3: The Camera Nobody Knew About
I stared at the photograph until the screen dimmed.
Lily was sitting on the laundry-room floor.
Her knees were pulled against her chest. Her hair was messy, and she was wearing the yellow pajamas I remembered buying her last Christmas.
The timestamp read 8:47 p.m.
Three days earlier.
I enlarged the image.
There was something written on the cardboard box beside her.
A name.
Noah.
I looked toward Vanessa.
"Who sent this?""
She glanced at my phone.
For the first time since I'd arrived home, she looked frightened rather than angry.
"Delete it.""
I raised my eyes.
"What?""
"Marcus, delete that picture.""
"Why?""
"Because it's probably some sick joke.""
Rachel took a step closer.
"Who would have a picture of Lily in that room?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know!""
My phone vibrated again.
Another message.
*Check the security camera in the hallway. The footage is saved to your home account.*
I had installed cameras six months earlier after someone stole packages from our front porch.
There was one in the living room, one facing the front entrance, and another in the hallway.
I had almost forgotten about them.
Vanessa hadn't.
I opened the security application.
The living-room camera showed the birthday party.
The hallway camera showed the laundry-room door.
I selected the recording from three days earlier.
At first, nothing happened.
Then Vanessa appeared on the screen.
She was holding a small plastic plate.
Lily stood beside her in her pajamas.
Even through the silent footage, I could see my daughter trying to say something.
Vanessa pointed toward the laundry room.
Lily shook her head.
Then Vanessa grabbed her wrist and pulled her toward the door.
I felt my fingers go numb.
On the screen, Vanessa opened the door, pushed Lily inside, and stepped back.
Lily turned around.
She reached both hands toward Vanessa.
Vanessa closed the door.
A few seconds later, she locked it.
I stopped breathing.
Rachel whispered, "Oh my God.""
I continued watching.
At 9:15 p.m., Vanessa returned.
She opened the door and placed something on the floor.
A piece of bread.
Then she closed it again.
At 10:32 p.m., she came back.
She stood outside the door holding her phone.
She laughed.
I turned up the volume.
Her voice came through the recording.
"Maybe tomorrow you'll learn not to be so greedy.""
Then she walked away.
I paused the video.
My entire body was shaking.
"Vanessa.""
She stared at the screen.
"That doesn't show everything.""
I turned toward her.
"Open the door.""
"I did open it.""
"You locked my daughter inside.""
"She was having a tantrum!""
"She's four years old!""
"She wouldn't stop crying!""
I stepped closer.
"How long was she in there?""
Vanessa looked away.
I replayed the footage.
The time moved forward.
11:06 p.m.
The door remained closed.
11:42 p.m.
Still closed.
Then, at 12:18 a.m., the hallway camera captured something I hadn't noticed.
A small shadow moved beneath the laundry-room door.
Lily had been awake.
Waiting.
For someone to open it.
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
Rachel took the phone from me.
"Marcus, call the police.""
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"Don't you dare!""
Rachel ignored her.
"Your daughter needs help.""
Vanessa grabbed the edge of the table.
"You're going to destroy this family over a misunderstanding?""
I looked at her.
"What part is a misunderstanding?""
She pointed toward the camera.
"She was never in danger! There was a blanket. There was food. I checked on her.""
I glanced at the photograph again.
"She was four years old, locked in a room by herself.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"You're choosing her over me.""
I stared at my wife.
"No. I'm choosing my daughter over the person hurting her.""
I called the police.
While we waited, Rachel took Lily upstairs and changed her into clean clothes.
I stayed in the living room.
Vanessa paced back and forth, repeatedly checking her phone.
At one point, she stopped beside me.
"Marcus, please. Think about Noah.""
I looked toward the birthday table.
Noah was sitting alone, holding a half-eaten cupcake.
He had heard everything.
I lowered my voice.
"Has Noah ever seen Lily in that room?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
I repeated the question.
"Has he?""
Finally, she whispered, "He knows.""
My stomach dropped.
"What does that mean?""
"He sometimes brings her food.""
"Why?""
"Because she asks him.""
I stared at her.
"Your eight-year-old son was sneaking food to my daughter because you wouldn't feed her?""
Vanessa started crying.
"I didn't want him involved.""
But the footage had already told me enough.
I walked toward Noah and crouched beside his chair.
"Buddy, can I ask you something?""
He nodded.
"Did you know Lily was hungry?""
He looked down.
"Sometimes.""
"Did you give her food?""
He nodded again.
"Mommy said I wasn't supposed to.""
"Why did you do it?""
His eyes filled with tears.
"Because Lily said her tummy hurt.""
I swallowed hard.
"How long has this been happening?""
Noah wiped his nose with his sleeve.
"Since before Christmas.""
I froze.
Christmas.
That was nearly a year ago.
"Before Christmas?""
He nodded.
"Mommy said Lily had to learn that this wasn't her house.""
The words struck harder than anything Vanessa had said.
I looked at the little boy.
"Did Mommy tell you that?""
"Yes.""
He hesitated.
Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.
"She also said Daddy would send Lily away if he knew the truth.""
I couldn't speak.
The police sirens sounded in the distance.
Vanessa stood near the window, trembling.
I thought the worst revelation had already come.
Then Noah reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"Mr. Marcus?""
I looked at him.
"What is it, buddy?""
He held it toward me.
"I found this in Mommy's bedroom. She said I must never show you.""
I unfolded the paper.
It was a printed email.
The subject line read:
*RE: CUSTODY ARRANGEMENT — LILY.*
My eyes moved down the page.
There was a payment amount.
A proposed date.
And the name of a woman I recognized immediately.
Vanessa's mother.
At the bottom was a sentence highlighted in yellow:
*Once Marcus signs the guardianship transfer, we can finally remove Lily from the household permanently.*
I slowly raised my head.
Vanessa was staring at me from across the room.
May you like
And when she saw the email in my hand, she whispered:
"Marcus, I can explain why your daughter was supposed to disappear.""
