Chapter 9: The Man Who Took My Daughter

I went down on one knee in front of Lily.

She was sitting on the sofa with her coloring book open across her lap.

Rachel had placed the pink coat beside her.

I tried to keep my voice calm.

"Sweetheart, can Daddy ask you something?""

Lily nodded.

"Do you remember a man named Ethan?""

Her little fingers tightened around a blue crayon.

"Yes.""

"Where did you meet him?""

"At Mommy's house.""

"When?""

She looked at Rachel.

"Before Christmas.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"Did he take you somewhere?""

Lily nodded.

"To see Grandpa.""

I closed my eyes for a second.

"Did Mommy know?""

Lily hesitated.

"Mommy said it was a secret.""

Rachel sat beside her.

"Did you feel scared, baby?""

Lily shook her head.

"Not at first.""

I gently touched her shoulder.

"What happened?""

"He took me in his car. I wanted to call you, but he said Daddy was sleeping.""

My throat tightened.

"Where did he take you?""

"To the big house.""

The same house in the photograph.

I asked another question.

"Did Grandpa Daniel talk to you?""

Lily nodded.

"He gave me a doll.""

"What did he say?""

She looked down at her drawing.

"He said I could have lots of toys if I called him Daddy.""

I felt something break inside me.

Rachel pressed a hand against her mouth.

Lily continued.

"But I told him I already had a daddy.""

I pulled her into my arms.

"That's right, sweetheart.""

She rested her cheek against my shoulder.

"Then he got angry.""

I held her tighter.

"What did he do?""

"He took the doll away.""

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then Lily whispered:

"He said I was a bad girl because I didn't love him.""

I looked toward Helen.

"We're reporting this immediately.""

Helen was already on the phone.

Within minutes, officers were contacted and arrangements were made to preserve the existing security footage, the photographs, and the documents Claire had provided.

But I wasn't prepared for what happened next.

Claire opened her notebook again.

"There is something else.""

I looked at her.

"What now?""

She turned to a page with several handwritten dates.

"Every time Ethan took Lily to see Daniel, he recorded the visit.""

"Why?""

"Daniel wanted evidence that Lily was comfortable with him. He believed he could use the recordings to show that she had a relationship with him.""

I felt disgusted.

"Where are those recordings?""

"On a laptop in Daniel's house.""

Helen immediately wrote down the information.

"We'll include that in the investigation.""

Claire shook her head.

"There's another reason I came here. One of those recordings contains a conversation between Daniel and Vanessa.""

I stared at her.

"What conversation?""

"The one where they discussed the guardianship payment.""

My phone vibrated.

An incoming call.

Vanessa.

I almost rejected it.

Then I answered.

"What do you want?""

Her voice sounded weak.

"Marcus, please. I need to talk to you.""

"About what?""

"About Lily.""

"You've done enough.""

"Please listen. I know what you found.""

I looked at Helen.

She gestured for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

Vanessa continued.

"Daniel is coming for her.""

I laughed bitterly.

"He has been coming for her for months.""

"No. You don't understand. He's changed the plan.""

"What plan?""

She began crying.

"Ethan has been staying at the house. Daniel told him to prepare everything. They're planning to take Lily again.""

My blood ran cold.

"Where are you?""

"At my mother's house.""

"Why are you telling me this now?""

"Because Daniel threatened me.""

I looked at Helen.

"What did he threaten you with?""

"He said if I didn't cooperate, he would make sure I went to prison for everything. He has recordings of me. He has the bank transfers.""

I stared at the phone.

"You took money to help him.""

"I know.""

"You locked my daughter in a room.""

"I know.""

"You lied to me for months.""

"I know, Marcus!""

Her voice cracked.

Then she whispered:

"But I didn't know he was going to take her himself.""

I leaned forward.

"Vanessa, did you know about the inheritance when you married me?""

Silence.

"Answer me.""

"Yes.""

The admission hit like a physical blow.

"How long?""

"My mother told me about it before the wedding.""

I felt the room become unbearably quiet.

"Before we got married?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you marry me for Lily's trust?""

"No. Not at first.""

"Not at first?""

Vanessa sobbed.

"My mother said your father had money. She said if I stayed close to you, I might eventually have a chance to help Lily manage the inheritance.""

I stared at the floor.

"And you agreed?""

"I thought I could handle everything.""

"By locking her in a laundry room?""

"No!""

Her voice broke.

"I made terrible decisions. I was angry. Daniel kept telling me that Lily would never belong in our family. He said you would eventually choose me and Noah if she wasn't there.""

I looked toward Rachel.

She had tears in her eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"Marcus, please. I know I don't deserve forgiveness. But I have something you need.""

"What?""

"A recording.""

I straightened.

"Of what?""

"Daniel talking to Ethan. He told him what to do if you refused to sign the guardianship papers.""

Helen leaned closer to the phone.

"Where is this recording?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"On my phone. I saved it because I was afraid Daniel would turn against me.""

"Send it," I said.

"I will. But I need you to promise something.""

I almost laughed.

"You're not in a position to negotiate.""

"Please. I need to know Noah will be safe.""

That stopped me.

Noah.

The eight-year-old boy who had secretly fed my daughter because he couldn't bear to watch her go hungry.

"Is Noah with you?""

"Yes.""

"Is he safe?""

"Yes.""

I looked at Rachel.

Then I answered.

"Noah is not responsible for what you did. I will make sure he's protected.""

Vanessa began crying.

"I don't know how to fix this.""

I looked at Lily.

She was drawing a house with three windows and a red roof.

"You can't undo what happened.""

The call ended.

Thirty seconds later, a file arrived.

Helen opened it.

The recording began with background noise, followed by Daniel's voice.

"She'll come willingly if we tell her Marcus agreed.""

Ethan laughed.

"And if he doesn't?""

Daniel answered without hesitation.

"Then we make sure he never gets the chance to stop us.""

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then Ethan asked:

"What about the girl?""

Daniel's voice became colder.

"Take her before the hearing. Once she's here, Marcus will have no choice but to negotiate.""

Helen stopped the recording.

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire pointed toward the laptop.

"Keep listening.""

Helen replayed the final seconds.

Daniel's voice returned.

"And whatever happens, don't let her speak to the woman who used to work for Eleanor.""

I looked at Claire.

She had gone completely pale.

"Who is he talking about?"" I asked.

Claire slowly shook her head.

Then she whispered:

"Me.""

I frowned.

"Why would he be afraid of you?""

Claire opened her handbag and removed a final photograph.

It showed her standing beside my grandmother outside a hospital.

On the back, my grandmother had written a date and a sentence.

*The day Claire saved Lily's life.*

I stared at the photograph.

"Saved her life?""

Claire nodded.

Then she told me something I had never imagined.

"Marcus, your father tried to have Lily killed when she was only six months old.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"What?""

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"And I have the medical records to prove it.""

Before I could ask another question, Helen's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Then she slowly stood up.

"Mr. Hale, we have a problem.""

"What?""

She looked directly at me.

"Daniel's attorney has just filed an emergency motion claiming that Lily was abducted from her legal guardian.""

I stared at her.

"Who is the legal guardian?""

Helen turned the laptop toward me.

The document listed Vanessa's full name.

And beneath it was a court order bearing a judge's signature.

*Temporary guardianship had already been granted.*

It had been issued six weeks earlier.

Without my knowledge.

Without my consent.

And according to the order, I had voluntarily surrendered custody of my daughter.
