Chapter 13: The Night My Father Came for His Granddaughter

I drove faster than I ever had in my life.

The emergency dispatcher remained on the phone while I raced toward Rachel's house.

"Sir, I need you to slow down and listen carefully. Officers are being dispatched.""

"My daughter is four years old. There are two men in the house. One of them has taken her before.""

"Do you know the identity of either suspect?""

"Yes. One is Ethan Hale. The other works for my father.""

There was a pause.

"Your father's name?""

"Daniel Hale.""

I gripped the steering wheel.

My father had been dead for three years.

Now he was stealing my daughter.

When I turned onto Rachel's street, I saw a black SUV pulling away from the curb.

Its headlights were off.

I recognized it immediately.

The same vehicle Vanessa had described.

I slammed my foot against the accelerator.

The SUV turned onto the main road.

I followed.

"Marcus, don't pursue them," the dispatcher warned.

"They have Lily!""

"Additional units are approaching. Give us the vehicle description.""

I gave her the license plate number.

Then I watched the SUV disappear around a corner.

My phone rang.

Helen.

"Marcus, where are you?""

"Following the vehicle.""

"Do not attempt to stop it. The police have been notified.""

"Where is Rachel?""

"She's been found.""

I nearly lost control of the steering wheel.

"Is she alive?""

"Yes. She's conscious, but she was struck when the men entered the house. Paramedics are with her.""

"And Lily?""

Helen hesitated.

"They haven't found her.""

I felt the world close around me.

I continued driving.

Then another call came through.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

"Where is my daughter?""

My father's voice filled the car.

"Hello, Marcus.""

For three years, I had believed that voice belonged to a dead man.

Now it was speaking to me as though nothing had happened.

"Where's Lily?""

Daniel chuckled.

"You're always in such a hurry.""

"If you hurt her, I swear—"

"Careful. Threats don't help anyone.""

"Give her back!""

My father sighed.

"She's my granddaughter. I have every right to see her.""

"You forged documents. You paid Vanessa. You locked her in a room. You stole her from her own home.""

"Vanessa made mistakes.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You're blaming her?""

"She was weak. I gave her an opportunity to improve her life.""

"By starving a four-year-old?""

"She was supposed to make Lily understand that she belonged somewhere else.""

I felt my hands shaking.

"Where are you taking her?""

"Somewhere safe.""

"Put Lily on the phone.""

There was a pause.

Then I heard a small voice.

"Daddy?""

My heart nearly stopped.

"Lily!""

"Daddy, I want to come home.""

"I'm coming, sweetheart. Stay with me.""

A man's voice interrupted.

"That's enough.""

The phone moved.

Then Daniel returned.

"Marcus, here's what happens next. You withdraw the guardianship challenge. You sign the trust authorization. And you stop involving the police.""

I swallowed.

"And if I refuse?""

My father's voice became cold.

"Then Lily stays with me.""

I closed my eyes.

"She's four years old. She doesn't understand any of this.""

"She'll understand eventually.""

"She's frightened.""

"She'll adjust.""

I almost screamed.

Instead, I forced myself to speak calmly.

"What about the two million dollars?""

Daniel chuckled.

"Gregory told you?""

"You offered to buy my daughter.""

"I offered to settle a family dispute.""

"She's not a business transaction.""

"Everything has a price, Marcus.""

I heard a faint sound in the background.

Lily was crying.

"Grandpa, please. I want Daddy.""

Daniel spoke away from the phone.

"Stop crying.""

Then I heard a sharp noise.

Lily went silent.

My blood turned cold.

"What did you do?""

"Nothing. She's tired.""

"Put her back on.""

"No.""

The call ended.

I pulled into a gas station parking lot and immediately contacted the police.

I gave them everything.

The vehicle details.

The call.

The threats.

The voice recording of Daniel.

They instructed me to stay where I was.

Twenty minutes later, an officer arrived.

Helen joined us shortly afterward.

Rachel had been taken to the hospital with a concussion and a cut above her eyebrow. She was expected to recover.

But Lily was still missing.

Then Helen received a call.

She listened carefully.

Her expression changed.

"Where?""

She ended the call and turned toward me.

"The black SUV has been located.""

I stood.

"Where is it?""

"Abandoned outside an industrial property near the river.""

I started walking toward the police vehicle.

Helen grabbed my arm.

"Marcus, wait.""

I turned.

"She's there.""

"We don't know that.""

"Then let's find out.""

Within minutes, we were following several police vehicles toward the property.

The building was an old warehouse surrounded by chain-link fencing.

The officers approached with their weapons drawn.

I was instructed to remain behind them.

I hated every second.

A few minutes later, one officer returned.

"Mr. Hale?""

"Have you found her?""

"We found evidence that someone was here recently.""

"What evidence?""

"A child's blanket. A juice carton. A stuffed animal.""

I looked at the blanket.

It was pink.

Lily's.

I reached for it.

The officer allowed me to examine it.

There was a small embroidered rabbit on one corner.

I had bought it for her birthday.

I felt my knees weaken.

"Where is she?""

"We're still searching.""

Then an officer called from inside the warehouse.

"We have a room!""

I ran toward the entrance before anyone could stop me.

Inside, there was a small office with a mattress, several toys, and a portable heater.

A plastic plate sat on the floor.

There was food beside it.

But Lily wasn't there.

On the desk was a sheet of paper.

I picked it up.

It was a handwritten instruction.

*Take the child to the lake house. Do not return until the father signs.*

At the bottom was Daniel's signature.

Helen read it over my shoulder.

"Lake house?""

I recognized the address.

It was a property my father had owned before his supposed death.

A place where we had spent summers when I was a teenager.

Then another officer entered carrying a mobile phone.

"We found this underneath the mattress.""

He showed me the screen.

A video was open.

It showed Ethan speaking to someone outside the camera's view.

"Grandpa says the girl goes first. Then Marcus signs.""

A second voice answered.

"And if he refuses?""

Ethan laughed.

"Then we make him believe she won't come home.""

The video ended.

I looked at the officer.

"We need to go to the lake house.""

Helen shook her head.

"Wait. The police are arranging a tactical response.""

I stared at her.

"My daughter is alone with these people.""

"We will get her.""

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from a number I recognized.

Vanessa.

*Marcus, I know where Daniel is taking Lily. I'm coming to help. Please don't let him hurt her.*

I stared at the message.

Then another arrived.

*And Marcus, I need to tell you the truth about why he chose Lily.*

I called her.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"Where are you?""

"Driving to the lake house.""

"Stop. The police are handling it.""

"I can't.""

"Vanessa, don't do anything stupid.""

She began crying.

"There's something Daniel never told you. Lily isn't just the beneficiary of Eleanor's trust.""

I closed my eyes.

"What does that mean?""

Vanessa whispered:

"Your father believes Lily is the only person who can expose the secret account he created before he faked his death.""

I gripped the phone.

"How?""

"Because the account was opened in her name.""

I stared at the warehouse wall.

May you like

Then Vanessa said the words that changed everything.

"Marcus, your father has been stealing money from Lily since the day she was born.""
