Chapter 7: The Secret My Grandmother Took to Her Grave
Helen Carter's office was on the eighteenth floor of a glass building downtown.
I arrived at 10:15 the following morning with Rachel, Lily, and the brown envelope my mother had given me.
I hadn't slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily kneeling beside the garbage can. Then I saw the security footage. Then the photograph of my supposedly dead father holding my daughter.
But one question kept coming back.
Why had my grandmother chosen Vanessa to protect Lily?
Helen was waiting when we arrived.
She was in her early sixties, with silver hair, thin-framed glasses, and the kind of expression that suggested she had spent her entire career delivering bad news without apologizing for it.
"Mr. Hale.""
"Please tell me you can explain what's happening.""
She looked at Lily.
"First, I want you to know that everything we're discussing today concerns protecting her interests.""
Lily was holding a stuffed rabbit Rachel had bought her.
"Am I in trouble?"" she asked.
Helen immediately softened.
"Absolutely not, sweetheart. You're the most important person in this room.""
Lily nodded.
Then she leaned against Rachel.
Helen opened a locked cabinet and removed a thick blue folder.
"Your grandmother came to see me approximately eight months before she died," she explained.
"She had concerns about your father.""
"What kind of concerns?""
"Financial misconduct. Manipulation of family members. And something considerably more serious.""
She placed a photograph on the desk.
It showed my father standing outside an office building with two men.
I recognized him immediately.
The man beside him was wearing a dark suit.
The other was holding a briefcase.
"Who are they?""
"The man on the left was an accountant named Robert Mills. The other was a private financial adviser. Both were involved in investigating irregularities in your father's business accounts.""
I frowned.
"What irregularities?""
Helen opened the folder.
"Your grandmother discovered that approximately $780,000 had disappeared from a charitable foundation she established.""
I stared at her.
"My grandmother donated to children's hospitals.""
"Correct. The money was supposed to fund medical equipment and emergency accommodation for families with sick children.""
"Who took it?""
Helen didn't hesitate.
"Your father.""
Rachel covered her mouth.
I stared at the photograph.
"Are you certain?""
"We have bank records, correspondence, and an internal audit. Your grandmother confronted him shortly before her death.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What happened?""
Helen removed a handwritten letter.
"Your grandmother believed your father had been using family trusts to conceal unauthorized transfers. She feared that if he discovered she intended to expose him, he would attempt to take control of the remaining assets.""
I looked at the trust documents.
"And Lily?""
"Your grandmother believed Lily might become a target because she was the primary beneficiary.""
I shook my head.
"Why would he hurt his own granddaughter for money?""
Helen folded her hands.
"Because the inheritance was substantial, Mr. Hale. And your father had already demonstrated that he was willing to exploit people who trusted him.""
I looked down at Lily.
She was coloring quietly.
I wanted to keep the rest of the conversation away from her.
Rachel noticed.
"I'll take her to the waiting room.""
Lily immediately grabbed my sleeve.
"Are you coming?""
"I'll be right outside, sweetheart.""
"Promise?""
"Promise.""
When they left, Helen placed another document on the desk.
"This is the letter your grandmother wrote concerning Vanessa.""
I read the first paragraph.
It was dated two years before my grandmother died.
*I have watched Vanessa closely. She is not as devoted to Daniel as he believes. She has asked questions about the money he has taken, and she has refused to sign several documents he prepared. I believe she may be the only person close enough to Daniel to discover what he is planning.*
I stopped reading.
"You're telling me my grandmother knew Vanessa?""
"Yes.""
"She knew Vanessa before I married her?""
Helen nodded.
"Your grandmother met her several times. She believed Vanessa was uncomfortable with your father's financial dealings.""
I continued reading.
The final paragraph was underlined.
*If Daniel attempts to gain control of Lily's inheritance, Vanessa may be useful as a witness. However, never allow Daniel to become the child's legal guardian.*
I put the letter down.
"Then why did the trust name Vanessa?""
Helen turned to another page.
"It didn't name her as the permanent guardian. It named her as a potential temporary custodian under very specific conditions.""
I frowned.
"What conditions?""
"She would have to demonstrate that she was acting in Lily's best interests. The court would still have to approve any arrangement.""
I looked at the documents again.
"Did Vanessa know about this?""
Helen hesitated.
"I believe she did.""
My chest tightened.
That meant Vanessa might have known about the inheritance from the beginning.
And she might have married me knowing Lily was connected to millions of dollars.
"Was our marriage part of the plan?""
Helen didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she removed another envelope.
"This was found among your grandmother's personal papers. It contains a letter addressed to you.""
I opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My grandmother always wrote with a fountain pen, pressing hard enough to leave marks on the paper beneath.
*My dear Marcus,*
*If you're reading this, Daniel has probably found a way to reach Lily. I am sorry I couldn't protect her myself. I need you to understand that the money was never the most important part of this arrangement. It was the reason your father might come looking for her.*
I swallowed.
The letter continued.
**There is a woman named Claire Bennett. She worked for me for seventeen years. She knows where the original financial records are hidden.
If Daniel ever returns, find her. She knows what happened to the missing money, and she knows why he disappeared.**
I looked up.
"Who is Claire Bennett?""
Helen shook her head.
"I don't know. Your grandmother never provided a current address.""
I continued reading.
The final sentence was written in darker ink.
*And Marcus, if Daniel tells you he wants Lily because he loves her, remember this: he once tried to sell the future of his own family to save himself.*
I lowered the letter.
For a moment, the office was silent.
Then Helen opened her computer.
"There is one more matter.""
She turned the screen toward me.
It showed a scanned copy of a document filed three months earlier.
An application for guardianship.
The applicant was Daniel Hale.
The child was Lily Hale.
And the supporting evidence included photographs of Lily looking unwashed, wearing stained clothing, and sitting alone.
I recognized some of them.
Vanessa had taken them.
Helen pointed to the date.
"Your father began this process long before the birthday party.""
I felt anger burning in my chest.
"Can we stop him?""
"We can request emergency protection and notify the court that the supporting documents may have been obtained through manipulation and neglect.""
"Then let's do it.""
Helen nodded.
But before she could continue, her assistant appeared at the door.
"Ms. Carter, there's a woman downstairs asking for you.""
"Who?""
"She says her name is Claire Bennett.""
Helen slowly stood up.
I stared at her.
The woman my grandmother had told me to find had just walked into the building.
And she was carrying a photograph.
When she entered the office, she looked directly at me.
Then she said:
"Marcus, your father didn't disappear because he was afraid of being arrested.""
May you like
She placed the photograph on the desk.
"He disappeared because he murdered the one person who knew where the money went.""
