Chapter 11: The Woman My Father Tried to Silence

I couldn't speak.

My grandmother had died peacefully, according to the family.

She had been seventy-eight. Her doctor had said her heart condition had worsened, and we had accepted the explanation.

Now Claire was telling me she had been poisoned.

I looked at her.

"How do you know?""

Claire removed a folded newspaper clipping from her handbag.

It was dated three years earlier.

The headline read:

*LOCAL PHILANTHROPIST DIES AT HOME AFTER SUDDEN MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS.*

"Two days before Eleanor died, she called me," Claire explained.

"She said she had discovered something in Daniel's financial records.""

"What?""

"Payments to a medical supply company that didn't exist. The company had been created to divert charitable funds.""

I looked at Helen.

"Was this investigated?""

"Not officially.""

Claire continued.

"Your grandmother was going to give the records to the authorities. She asked me to meet her that evening.""

"Did you?""

"No. Daniel called me first.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"He told me Eleanor had changed her mind. He said she was tired and wanted to rest.""

"Why did you believe him?""

"I didn't. I went to the house anyway.""

She paused.

"When I arrived, the ambulance was already there.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Was she alive?""

"Yes. But barely.""

Claire took a shaky breath.

"I saw Daniel standing in the hallway. He told everyone she had suffered a sudden medical emergency.""

"What happened after that?""

"He wouldn't let me into her bedroom.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"I tried. But Daniel told them I was confused and emotionally unstable. He claimed I had been stealing from Eleanor.""

Claire opened her handbag again.

This time, she removed a small digital recorder.

"I kept this.""

Helen immediately leaned forward.

"What's on it?""

"The conversation I had with Eleanor three days before she died.""

She pressed play.

My grandmother's voice filled the room.

It was weaker than I remembered, but unmistakable.

"Claire, I need you to promise me something.""

Claire's younger voice answered.

"Anything, Eleanor.""

"Daniel has found the trust documents. He knows about Lily.""

There was a pause.

Then my grandmother continued.

"He wants the money. But he's also afraid of what Robert discovered.""

Claire asked:

"What did Robert find?""

My grandmother whispered something.

"Daniel didn't just steal from the foundation. He used the money to pay for something much worse.""

The recording ended abruptly.

I stared at the recorder.

"What was she talking about?""

Claire shook her head.

"She never finished explaining.""

Helen examined the device.

"Is there another recording?""

"Not on that one.""

I looked toward the storage key.

"Then let's get the original records.""

Helen nodded.

She arranged for law enforcement to accompany us to the storage facility.

Before leaving, I checked on Lily.

She was asleep in Rachel's lap.

Her little hand was wrapped around the stuffed rabbit.

I kissed her forehead.

"Stay with Aunt Rachel.""

She opened one eye.

"Are you going away?""

"Just for a little while.""

"Will you come back?""

"Always.""

She closed her eyes again.

The storage facility was twenty minutes away.

Unit 317 was located at the end of a long corridor.

Claire inserted the brass key.

The lock turned.

Inside were several cardboard boxes, an old filing cabinet, and a large metal safe.

There was also a framed photograph of my grandmother.

She was standing beside a little girl in a yellow dress.

I stepped closer.

The girl was Lily.

But Lily hadn't been born when the photograph was supposedly taken.

I looked at Claire.

"How is that possible?""

Claire examined it.

Then she shook her head.

"That's not Lily.""

She turned the frame around.

A handwritten note was taped to the back.

*For the little girl who came before Lily.*

My stomach tightened.

"Who is she?""

Claire looked away.

"Your father's first granddaughter.""

I frowned.

"I thought Lily was his first grandchild.""

"She was supposed to be.""

Claire opened the filing cabinet.

Inside were birth records, adoption papers, and several medical documents.

One file had my father's name printed across the top.

I pulled it out.

It contained a birth certificate for a girl named Sophie Hale.

Born twenty-nine years earlier.

Mother: Unknown.

Father: Daniel Hale.

I stared at the page.

"Who is Sophie?""

Claire answered quietly.

"Your father's daughter.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Where is she?""

Claire hesitated.

"She died when she was six months old.""

My chest tightened.

"How?""

Claire pointed toward another document.

The hospital report stated that the child had suffered a serious medical reaction after receiving an improperly administered medication.

But the next page was different.

It was a handwritten statement from a nurse.

*The dosage was altered after the attending physician left the room. I saw Daniel Hale remove a vial from the medical cart.*

I felt sick.

"Was this investigated?""

"No," Claire replied.

"Daniel paid the hospital to settle the matter privately.""

I stared at her.

"You're saying he killed his own daughter?""

Claire shook her head.

"I'm saying he was suspected of causing her death, and the evidence disappeared.""

I looked at the medical records.

Then I noticed a familiar name.

Dr. Samuel Price.

The same doctor who had signed my grandmother's death certificate.

I felt my stomach drop.

"Was he involved in both cases?""

Claire nodded.

"He was Daniel's personal physician.""

Helen photographed every document.

"We need to preserve all of this and get it to investigators immediately.""

Then Claire opened the safe.

Inside was a sealed envelope with my name written across it.

The handwriting belonged to my grandmother.

I opened it carefully.

*Marcus,*

*If Daniel has managed to reach Lily, then I have failed to protect you both. But there is one thing I need you to know. Daniel has another reason for wanting control of the trust.*

I continued reading.

*He believes the trust contains evidence of the original transactions that funded his business empire. He is wrong. The evidence is hidden somewhere else.*

Below that was a final paragraph.

*I gave the original records to the only person Daniel would never suspect.*

I looked up.

"Who?""

Claire's face had turned pale.

"Your mother.""

I stared at her.

"Margaret?""

Claire nodded.

"Your grandmother trusted her with the records because Daniel never believed she would betray him.""

I immediately called my mother.

She answered on the first ring.

"Marcus?""

"Mom, do you have the original financial records from Grandma?""

Silence.

Then she whispered:

"Yes.""

"Where are they?""

"I hid them in your father's old office.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Daniel came looking for them last week.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Did he find them?""

"No.""

"Then where are they?""

My mother began crying.

"Marcus, there's something you need to understand. The records aren't just proof of financial fraud.""

"What else are they?""

"They contain the name of the person who helped Daniel fake his death.""

I closed my eyes.

"Who?""

My mother took a trembling breath.

Then she said:

"Your wife.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Vanessa?""

"Yes. And Marcus, there's something else. She wasn't just helping Daniel take Lily's inheritance.""

May you like

My mother's voice dropped to a whisper.

"She was the one who helped him arrange the accident that killed your grandmother.""
