Chapter 11: The Last Recording

Nobody moved.

My father’s words hung in the air.

Claire was supposed to destroy that.

Not lose it.

Not hide it.

Destroy it.

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked like he realized he had said too much.

“David.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

“No more.””

I held up the locket.

“No more secrets.””

My father looked at me.

“I’m your father.””

“And she was my wife.””

That stopped him.

For the first time, Richard Carter had nothing to say.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Where is the rest of the evidence?””

Richard looked at him.

“You should have stayed out of this.””

Marcus smiled sadly.

“Claire paid me to stay in.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“She was always too curious.””

I felt anger burn through me.

“She was trying to protect us.””

“She was trying to destroy the family.””

The sentence shocked everyone.

Even Vanessa.

I stared at him.

“Why?””

Richard didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

“Why would my wife want to destroy our family?””

His eyes met mine.

“Because she thought she knew the truth.””

“And did she?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“What truth?””

Richard looked at Lily.

Then away.

“Not here.””

I laughed.

“Not here?””

I looked around.

“A wedding room?””

I pointed at the dress.

“You walked into a room where my daughter was crying because your future daughter-in-law took her mother’s necklace.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No, David.””

His voice became harder.

“You understand what Claire wanted you to believe.””

The words made me stop.

“What?””

Richard looked at the locket.

“She knew how to manipulate people.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You’re talking about my wife.””

“I’m talking about someone who was desperate.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her face was filled with anger.

“Don’t rewrite Claire’s story.””

Richard looked at her.

“You weren’t there.””

“I was.””

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“I was there when she cried because she didn’t know who to trust.””

My father looked away.

Marcus pulled out his phone.

“I have something you need to hear.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“What?””

Marcus pressed a button.

A recording started.

Static.

Then Claire’s voice.

“David, if you’re hearing this, please don’t believe the first person who tells you I was wrong.””

My entire body froze.

Claire.

Again.

Her voice.

Older.

Tired.

But still hers.

“I know they will try to explain everything.””

A pause.

“I know they will say I was afraid. Emotional. Confused.””

Richard looked away.

Claire continued.

“But I was not confused.””

My eyes moved to my father.

“She found out.””

Richard whispered.

Nobody responded.

Claire’s recording continued.

“David, the person who betrayed us is someone who believes family gives them permission to hurt people.””

My hands shook.

The recording continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

A pause.

Then:

“The money was never the biggest crime.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked at me.

The recording played on.

“The money was only the beginning.””

I felt cold.

“What beginning?””

Claire’s voice continued.

“The real secret is what happened before I got sick.””

The recording stopped.

Static.

Then nothing.

I looked at Marcus.

“That’s it?””

He nodded.

“That’s all she gave me.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted to make sure the person listening was the right person.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“She didn’t trust anyone.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“Not even me?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

My father suddenly moved toward the door.

I noticed.

“Where are you going?””

He stopped.

“I need to leave.””

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“David.””

“You’re not leaving.””

For the first time, my father looked at me like an opponent.

Not a son.

An opponent.

“You have no idea what you’re about to uncover.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me.””

He looked at the locket.

Then the note.

Then Lily.

And quietly said:

“Ask yourself why Claire left the evidence with your daughter.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?””

Richard walked toward the door.

“Your wife wasn’t protecting herself.””

He paused.

“She was protecting Lily from me.””

Then he left.

The door closed.

And nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

May you like

Claire’s final secret wasn’t about money.

It was about my daughter.
