Chapter 3: The Envelope Claire Left Behind
The wedding room no longer looked like a wedding room.
The flowers were still arranged neatly.
The dress was still hanging beside the mirror.
The sunlight still came through the windows.
But the happiness was gone.
A place meant for promises had become a place filled with questions.
I looked at Evelyn’s hand.
The envelope shook slightly between her fingers.
Claire’s handwriting covered the front.
I knew it.
I would know it anywhere.
“Evelyn,” I said quietly.
She looked at me.
“Give it to me.””
Vanessa moved immediately.
“No.””
One word.
Sharp.
Instant.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa seemed to realize what she had done.
She lowered her voice.
“David, please.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe this was happening.
The woman I was supposed to marry was standing between me and a letter from my dead wife.
“Why are you scared of a piece of paper?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
“Because this is hurting her.””
I looked down.
Lily was still holding my arm.
She looked tiny.
Lost.
I crouched beside her.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
But children don’t always tell the truth when they’re trying to protect adults.
“I’m okay, Daddy.””
Her voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
I touched her shoulder.
“You don’t have to protect anyone.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Mommy said you were a good man.””
My heart broke.
“When did Mommy say that?””
Lily looked at the locket.
“Before she got sick.””
Vanessa looked away.
I noticed.
Again.
Every reaction.
Every pause.
Every movement.
It all mattered now.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“David, Claire wanted you to have this.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
That was the first time I heard anger in Evelyn’s voice.
Not sadness.
Not disappointment.
Anger.
She handed me the envelope.
I took it.
The paper felt heavy.
Almost impossible to open.
Because part of me was terrified.
What if Claire was wrong?
What if the note was written during a moment of fear?
What if I destroyed my future because of something my past left behind?
But then I looked at Lily.
And I remembered the locket.
The way Vanessa held it above my daughter’s reach.
The way she looked at that note.
The way she said don’t.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was another folded paper.
And a photograph.
I pulled out the photograph first.
My breath caught.
It was Claire.
But she wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was Vanessa.
They were younger.
Smiling.
My eyes moved between their faces.
“You knew each other before me?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Evelyn did.
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
“Claire never told you?””
“No.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Because it wasn’t important.””
I looked at her.
“My dead wife put a warning inside a necklace and left me an envelope with your name attached to it.””
I held up the photograph.
“And you’re telling me this isn’t important?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“Maybe.””
I looked at the letter.
“But I’m going to read it.””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“David.””
I unfolded the page.
The first sentence was written clearly.
“David, if you are reading this, then Vanessa is standing in front of you.””
My hands went cold.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Lily leaned against me.
I kept reading.
“I need you to know something before you make the biggest mistake of your life.””
I stopped.
Vanessa moved closer.
“Don’t.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
The silence was louder than any confession.
I looked back down.
The next line waited.
“Vanessa did not come into our lives by accident.””
My heart started pounding.
I read the next words.
And then I saw the sentence that made me look up at Vanessa.
“Three years ago, she was the reason I started investigating…”
The page ended there.
I stared at the empty space below.
A missing piece.
A hidden truth.
A story Claire never finished.
Vanessa took one step forward.
“David…”
I looked at her.
“Investigating what?””
Her face changed.
And for the first time, she looked like someone who knew the truth was finally catching up.
But before she could answer, Evelyn’s phone suddenly rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression collapsed.
May you like
Because the name calling wasn’t a stranger.
It was Claire.
