Chapter 4: The Call From The Dead

Evelyn stared at her phone like it was impossible.

Like the glowing name on the screen was a ghost standing in front of her.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The wedding room that had been filled with chaos only seconds earlier became completely silent.

I looked at the screen.

Then at Evelyn.

Then back at the phone.

“Evelyn,” I whispered.

“Why is Claire calling you?””

Her fingers trembled.

She didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“Don’t pick it up.””

The speed of her response made my stomach tighten.

I turned toward her.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I mean… it’s probably nothing.””

“Nothing?””

I pointed at the phone.

“My dead wife’s name is on that screen.””

Vanessa looked away.

That was when I knew.

Something was wrong.

Not something small.

Not some misunderstanding.

Something buried.

Something Claire had been trying to uncover before she died.

Evelyn finally pressed the answer button.

She lifted the phone slowly.

“Hello?””

The room stayed silent.

I could hear Evelyn’s breathing.

Then her face changed.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Claire?””

My entire body went cold.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Daddy?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I was staring at Evelyn.

And Evelyn was listening to someone who should have been gone forever.

After several seconds, Evelyn whispered:

“No… no, she can’t know that.””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“Hang up.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“What?””

“Hang up the phone.””

The command was so sharp that even Evelyn looked surprised.

I stepped between them.

“Why are you telling her what to do?””

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“Because you don’t understand.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because you don’t!””

Her voice echoed through the room.

Lily flinched.

Immediately, Vanessa softened.

“Lily, I’m sorry.””

But Lily moved closer to me.

That hurt Vanessa.

I saw it.

She noticed.

And she hated it.

Evelyn pulled the phone away from her ear.

“She wants to talk to David.””

Nobody moved.

I stared at her.

“Me?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She said you need to hear the truth from her.””

My heart pounded.

“That’s impossible.””

Evelyn looked down.

“I thought so too.””

She handed me the phone.

My hand hovered above it.

I didn’t know what scared me more.

Hearing Claire’s voice…

or not hearing it.

Finally, I took it.

“Hello?””

Static.

Then silence.

“Hello?””

My throat tightened.

“Claire?””

For a moment, there was nothing.

Then a voice.

A recording.

A voice I hadn’t heard in three years.

“David…”

My knees almost gave out.

Lily looked up at me.

“Daddy?””

I covered my mouth.

Because that was her.

Claire.

My wife.

The woman who used to sing badly while cooking dinner.

The woman who danced with Lily in the living room.

The woman who promised me we would grow old together.

Her voice came through the phone.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened.””

I closed my eyes.

The tears came instantly.

“Claire…”

The recording continued.

“I don’t have much time, so I need you to listen carefully.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“David, turn it off.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

The phone shook in my hand.

Claire continued.

“I know you love Vanessa.””

My eyes opened.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“I know you believe she helped us after I got sick.””

The room felt colder.

“But David, there are things you don’t know.””

I whispered:

“What things?””

Of course, Claire couldn’t answer.

It was only a recording.

“I tried to tell you. More than once. But every time I got close, something happened.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

She knew.

She knew Claire had been afraid.

“Claire,” I whispered.

The recording continued.

“I need you to find the old storage box.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What box?””

The voice didn’t answer.

The recording continued.

“It has everything I found.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“David, please.””

I turned.

Her face was desperate.

Not angry.

Not controlling.

Desperate.

“What did she find?””

Vanessa said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

The recording played one final sentence.

“The truth is not in the box, David.””

Static filled the room.

Then Claire’s voice returned.

“The truth is the person who tried to stop me from opening it.””

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Lily held onto my arm.

Evelyn looked at the floor.

Vanessa looked like she was about to collapse.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“Where is the storage box?””

She didn’t answer.

I took one step closer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

May you like

And finally, she whispered:

“I destroyed it.””
