Chapter 7: The Name On The Screen
The name on Vanessa’s phone looked impossible.
I stared at it.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
Then back at the screen.
My mind refused to connect the two things.
Because the person who sent the message was not a stranger.
Not some hidden enemy.
Not someone from Claire’s past.
It was someone who had stood beside me.
Someone who had comforted me.
Someone who had watched Lily grow up.
My own brother.
Thomas.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Vanessa lowered the phone.
“David…”
I shook my head.
“No.””
The wedding room felt like it was moving around me.
The white dress.
The flowers.
The mirror reflecting all of us.
Everything looked exactly the same.
But nothing was the same.
“My brother?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I took the phone from her hand.
The message was still there.
Claire’s husband knows.
Remove the evidence.
My fingers went numb.
“Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“David, I can explain.””
“Can you?””
I looked at the message.
“Because it looks like you and my brother were hiding something from me.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then why is his name on your phone?””
She looked away.
That tiny movement hurt more than a confession.
Marcus stepped forward.
“David.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Your brother wasn’t just involved.””
The room went silent.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“Claire suspected Thomas was helping someone move money.””
My chest tightened.
“My brother?””
I laughed once.
A broken sound.
“No.””
Lily looked up at me.
“Daddy?””
I immediately softened.
I didn’t want her seeing me fall apart.
I crouched beside her.
“Everything’s okay.””
But she looked at me with the same eyes Claire had.
Eyes that noticed everything.
“Is Uncle Tommy bad?””
The question destroyed me.
I looked away.
Because I didn’t know.
And I hated that.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Lily, don’t talk like that.””
But Lily moved behind me.
The reaction was small.
Almost invisible.
But I saw it.
And so did Vanessa.
Her face changed.
“Lily.””
The little girl stayed silent.
I stood.
“Why was my brother helping you?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He wasn’t helping me.””
“Then who?””
She looked at the floor.
“David…”
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“No more half-truths.””
Marcus nodded.
“She’s right.””
I looked at him.
“She?””
He pointed toward Vanessa.
“She wasn’t the person Claire was investigating first.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
Marcus reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out another folder.
“Claire originally thought Vanessa was involved.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“But then she discovered something else.””
“What?””
Marcus placed the folder on the table.
“She discovered someone was using Vanessa.””
I looked at her.
Vanessa looked ashamed.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Ashamed.
“I didn’t know everything,” she whispered.
I stared.
“Then what did you know?””
Her eyes met mine.
“I knew Thomas was scared.””
The room went quiet.
“Scared of what?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Claire.””
I frowned.
“My wife?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked toward the mirror.
At her reflection.
“I don’t know.””
The answer was too weak.
“You don’t know?””
“I knew Claire was asking questions.””
“What questions?””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
Marcus opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Bank records.
Photos.
And one handwritten page.
Claire’s handwriting.
I picked it up.
The first sentence made my stomach turn.
“David, the person closest to you is not the person you think.””
I read the next line.
“Please don’t confront him until you know the full truth.””
My hands tightened.
“Him.””
Not her.
Him.
I looked at Marcus.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you waited?””
“I was following Claire’s instructions.””
I stared at him.
“She told you not to tell me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Because she believed confronting him too early would put Lily at risk.””
My eyes moved immediately to my daughter.
A cold feeling spread through me.
“What does Lily have to do with this?””
Nobody answered.
That silence was worse than anything.
I grabbed the folder.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Vanessa whispered:
“David…”
I looked at her.
“Did Claire think Lily was in danger?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The word barely left her mouth.
I felt the room disappear.
My daughter.
My little girl.
The reason I kept going after losing Claire.
Someone had put her in danger.
And I had been too blind to see it.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone froze.
I looked at the screen.
Thomas.
My brother.
I answered.
“What?””
There was silence.
Then his voice.
“David.””
My jaw tightened.
“What did you do?””
Another pause.
“Where did you get that message?””
I laughed bitterly.
“You’re asking me?””
His breathing changed.
“Listen to me.””
“No.””
“David, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“Claire never trusted Vanessa.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Thomas continued.
“She didn’t trust me either.””
I froze.
“Why?””
A long silence.
Then he said:
“Because she found out what we did.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
And for the first time…
May you like
I wondered if Claire’s warning wasn’t about Vanessa.
Maybe it was about my entire family.
