Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Gone
I stared at the phone long after the call ended.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody even moved.
The room felt frozen in the exact moment before a storm arrives.
Claire.
That was what I heard.
Not a recording.
Not an old message.
Her voice.
Real.
Alive.
My mind rejected it.
Because there were only two possibilities.
Either I was losing my mind…
or everything I believed about the last three years was a lie.
Lily looked up at me.
“Daddy?””
I looked at her.
My daughter.
The reason Claire would have fought until her final breath.
I forced myself to breathe.
“Baby, stay with Evelyn for a minute.””
Her eyebrows pulled together.
“Why?””
“Because Daddy needs to figure something out.””
She didn’t want to leave my side.
I saw it.
But she trusted me.
She slowly walked toward Evelyn.
Marcus watched me carefully.
“You heard her.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“Are you sure?””
I looked at him.
“I would recognize Claire’s voice anywhere.””
Nobody argued.
Even Vanessa looked shaken.
She sat completely still.
Like the world had just collapsed around her.
I turned toward her.
“You knew.””
Her eyes lifted.
“What?””
“You knew she was alive.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why did you look like you weren’t surprised?””
Her face changed.
“I…”
“You knew something.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I thought she was dead.””
The words were quiet.
But honest.
That was the first honest thing I heard from her in a long time.
“Thought?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Because I never saw the body.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“David, after Claire went to the hospital, I was told everything happened quickly.””
“By who?””
Vanessa hesitated.
I already knew.
“My father.””
The room froze.
I stared.
“Your father?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was the one who told me Claire passed away.””
My heart pounded.
“Your father knew?””
“Yes.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Who is your father?””
Vanessa looked at him.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“Richard Carter’s business partner.””
My stomach dropped.
Everything connected.
The money.
The secrets.
The people disappearing.
My father.
Vanessa’s family.
Claire’s investigation.
All of it.
But one question remained.
“If Claire was alive…”
I looked at the locket.
“Why did she leave me a warning?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“Because she knew she couldn’t come back.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“She was hiding.””
I turned.
Evelyn looked like she had aged ten years in minutes.
“She called me.””
“When?””
“After the funeral.””
I froze.
“After the funeral?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She told me she couldn’t come home.””
My voice broke.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Evelyn cried.
“Because Claire begged me not to.””
“Why?””
She looked at Lily.
“Because she said someone was watching you.””
The room became silent again.
My daughter.
Always Lily.
Claire wasn’t trying to save herself.
She was trying to save our child.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Then why marry me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I thought I could protect Lily.””
I shook my head.
“You thought marrying me would protect her?””
“No.””
She looked ashamed.
“I thought staying close to your family would help me find the truth.””
I stared.
“So our wedding…”
“Was never about me replacing Claire.””
The sentence hurt.
Because deep down, I had wondered.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I loved you, David.””
I didn’t respond.
Because I didn’t know if love was enough anymore.
Marcus checked his phone.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
He turned the screen toward me.
A location.
An address.
“What is that?””
“The place Claire has been sending information from.””
My heart stopped.
“You know where she is?””
Marcus nodded.
“Now I do.””
I grabbed my jacket.
“We’re going.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
She stood.
Her expression was serious.
“If Claire is alive, she wouldn’t want you rushing there.””
“Why?””
“Because if someone is watching…”
She looked at Lily.
“They’ll know you found her.””
The truth of that hurt.
Because it was exactly what Claire would have thought.
I looked at the little girl holding her mother’s locket.
Then at the door.
For three years, I lived believing Claire was gone.
Now I had a chance to find her.
But I couldn’t risk Lily.
Not again.
Marcus picked up the envelope.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
He pulled out a small key.
“The safety deposit box.””
I looked at it.
“You found it?””
“No.””
He handed it to me.
“Claire sent me the location five minutes before she called.””
My heart raced.
“She knew we would find this?””
Marcus nodded.
“She planned for this moment.””
I looked at the key.
Then the locket.
Then my daughter.
And I realized something.
Claire had never stopped fighting.
She had been waiting.
Waiting for me to uncover the truth.
But before we could leave, Evelyn’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
“What?””
She handed me the phone.
A message.
From Claire.
Only four words.
“HE KNOWS I’M ALIVE.””
May you like
Then another message appeared.
“RUN.””
