Chapter 12: What Claire Knew

The room felt different after my father left.

Not quieter.

Heavier.

Like his presence stayed behind.

A shadow nobody could see.

I looked at Lily.

My daughter was sitting on the chair, holding Claire’s locket in both hands.

Seven years old.

Too young to understand everything happening around her.

But old enough to feel the fear.

I hated that.

I hated that the people who were supposed to protect her had become the reason she needed protection.

I sat beside her.

“Are you scared?””

She nodded.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

I pulled her close.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked up.

“For what?””

The question broke me.

Because she didn’t understand.

She thought this was normal.

Adults arguing.

Secrets.

People leaving.

I kissed her forehead.

“For not knowing.””

She touched the locket.

“Mommy knew.””

I looked down.

“Yes.””

“She always knew things.””

I smiled sadly.

“She did.””

“She knew when Daddy was sad.””

My throat tightened.

“She always did.””

Lily looked at me.

“She said you were too busy being strong.””

A tear slipped down my face.

Claire knew me too well.

Marcus cleared his throat.

“We need to find the original evidence.””

I looked up.

“What evidence?””

“The one Claire hid.””

I held the locket.

“You said this wasn’t the evidence.””

“No.””

“Then where is it?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“Don’t look at me.””

“Claire trusted you enough to leave Lily with you.””

Vanessa looked down.

“That doesn’t mean she trusted me completely.””

The honesty surprised me.

I sat back.

“Then tell me everything you do know.””

Vanessa was silent.

For a long moment, I thought she wouldn’t answer.

Then she whispered:

“Claire found something about your father.””

“What?””

“Something from years ago.””

Marcus nodded.

“She discovered a pattern.””

“What pattern?””

“People around Richard Carter disappeared from his life.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Business partners. Employees. Friends.””

Vanessa continued.

“Anyone who knew too much eventually left.””

I looked at her.

“And you?””

She looked away.

“I was supposed to leave too.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Claire confronted me.””

“When?””

“Two months before she died.””

“What did she say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She asked me if I was helping your father.””

The room went silent.

“Were you?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I was helping Thomas.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

“Because he was scared.””

I looked at Thomas.

He looked broken.

“I thought I could fix what I did.””

Vanessa continued.

“Claire knew.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she wanted to know if your father was controlling Thomas.””

I stared.

“And?””

Vanessa whispered:

“He was.””

Marcus checked his phone.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He showed me the screen.

A message.

From an unknown number.

“STOP LOOKING FOR THE BOX.””

My stomach tightened.

“How did they know?””

Nobody answered.

Another message appeared.

“THE GIRL WILL BE NEXT.””

Everything stopped.

I grabbed the phone.

My hands shook.

Lily.

No.

Absolutely not.

I looked around the room.

“Who has access to this information?””

Everyone looked at each other.

Then the answer became obvious.

Someone close.

Someone who knew everything.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

Soft.

Familiar.

A voice I never expected.

“David.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew it before she said her name.

“Claire.””

Everyone looked at me.

The voice continued.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you.””

My knees almost gave out.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Don’t trust anyone in that room.””

The call crackled.

“Claire, wait—”

But before she disappeared, she said one final sentence.

A sentence that changed everything.

May you like

“David… Lily’s mother didn’t die three years ago.””

The call ended.
