Chapter 6: The Evidence Claire Hid

I didn’t open the envelope immediately.

I couldn’t.

Because opening it meant accepting something I wasn’t ready to accept.

Claire had known.

She had been afraid.

And somehow, while I was planning a future with Vanessa, Claire had been preparing for a truth she might never get to reveal.

Lily looked up at me.

“Daddy?””

I forced myself to look at her.

“I’m okay, baby.””

But I wasn’t.

Children always know.

They know when adults are lying.

Marcus stood quietly near the door.

Waiting.

Vanessa stared at the envelope like it was dangerous.

Maybe it was.

“David,” she said softly.

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Don’t let him manipulate you.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Interesting.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

“You used the same words Claire said you would use.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at the envelope.

“Open it.””

I broke the seal.

Inside were three photographs.

A bank statement.

And a handwritten note.

I picked up the first photograph.

My hands went cold.

It showed Vanessa.

Not at our house.

Not with Lily.

Not at Claire’s funeral.

Somewhere else.

Standing beside a man I didn’t recognize.

The second photograph showed the same man entering a building.

The third showed Vanessa handing him something.

I looked at her.

“Who is he?””

Vanessa didn’t speak.

“Who is he?””

“I don’t know.””

Marcus let out a quiet breath.

“She knows.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You don’t know anything.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Claire knew.””

I turned to Marcus.

“Stop speaking in pieces.””

He nodded.

“You deserve the full story.””

Finally.

Someone was saying it.

Someone was treating me like I could handle the truth.

Marcus pointed at the photographs.

“Claire hired me because she noticed money disappearing.””

“From where?””

“Your family account.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Vanessa.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus shook his head.

“It happened slowly. Small amounts. Nothing that would immediately trigger suspicion.””

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“That’s a lie.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then explain why Claire had copies of every transaction.””

Silence.

I looked at the bank statement.

The numbers blurred.

“When?””

Marcus answered.

“Before she got sick.””

My fingers tightened.

“Are you saying Vanessa stole from us?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, David. I would never.””

I wanted to believe her.

That was the worst part.

A piece of me still wanted to.

Because love doesn’t disappear the second trust breaks.

It fights.

It searches for another explanation.

“Then explain.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I can.””

“Then do it.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came.

Lily whispered:

“Daddy, I want to go home.””

That sentence destroyed me.

Not because she wanted to leave.

Because she didn’t feel safe.

I immediately picked her up.

“I’m sorry.””

Vanessa watched me.

“David…”

I shook my head.

“Not now.””

Marcus looked at the letter.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed me Claire’s note.

I read the handwriting.

“David, if you’re reading this, I need you to know that Vanessa will deny everything.””

My heart sank.

The next line was worse.

“But don’t judge her by what she says.””

I looked confused.

Marcus watched me carefully.

I did.

“Judge her by what she does when she realizes the truth is finally coming out.””

I slowly lowered the paper.

Vanessa looked at me.

“David, please.””

Then her phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

She stared at the screen.

Her face changed instantly.

I noticed.

Because I had started noticing everything.

The fear.

The hesitation.

The secrets.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Answer it.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then back at the phone.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because if he knows David found the note…”

The ringing stopped.

A second later, a message appeared.

Vanessa looked down.

And I saw her expression collapse.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

She didn’t move.

I stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

Slowly, she turned the phone toward me.

The message contained only six words.

“Claire’s husband knows. Remove the evidence.””

And beneath it was a name.

May you like

A name I recognized.

Because it belonged to someone I trusted.
